this is one to replace the "numerical highway game", "connected highway game", etc ...

post a photo of some highway signs that is connected in some way to the previous photo.  I will start:

so, from here, one can post, oh maybe an Iowa US 67 sign, or perhaps a state route 67 elsewhere, or even a 76 which is 67 reversed, or a US-136 since those two highways meet in Macomb, IL... etc etc etc.  Have a ball.  The point is to post interesting photos of highway signs.

US 67 connects to I-64 in Frontenac, Missouri.  Here's I-64 1 mile east of VA 106(interesting that it's my exit for home).

Unrelated post, but with regards to that US 67 shield, WOW. Why is that colored?

agentsteel53

it was originally white and black, along with the guide signs on the bridge.  In 1996, the bridge was renovated.  The white guide signs were replaced with modern green and white ones.  The shield (which dates back to when the bridge was opened in 1940) was ... repainted to match.

And I drove under it and didn't see it. It was later on when reviewing photos that I recognized it so we could go back and get better photos.

Here is US-64 during its brief concurrency with I-35 north of Perry, OK. In all its Clearview glory.

US-64 also goes into New Mexico as this faux-old photo will attest.  The photo was taken a few months ago, and is courtesy the owner of the two shields.

US-2 and Washington SR 17, showcasing a one piece black reassurance shield, a rarity in most states but occasionally posted in Washington.

US 2 intersects US 87 at US 87's northern terminus in Havre, Mont.

black signs are always nice to see :)  some are old, others are simply made to old specs.  The feds mandated green instead of black in 1958 or 1959, and most states complied rather quickly.

The latest black sign I have seen from California is 1972, using a materials specification introduced in 1969 or so... so quite an oddity!  Someone must've pulled out the wrong specification manual when deciding the colors, but the shop who was contracted to print the sign used the correct materials.  It still hangs in the wild on an old state route 7 (Sepulveda Blvd) alignment.

so, on the theme, here is a black guide sign from California ...

1958 stamp on the back.

This US-99 is extra special because it hangs on my wall :)

That reminds me of another sign type that fascinates me. The inverted white on black is common in Idaho and on old button copy like you showed below, but occasionally it pops up in weird situations, like on this Washington SR 536 sign

agentsteel53

another example of an oddly inverted shield... check out these Idaho 41s in Coeur d'Alene that are the inverse of the usual black and white shield!

I've seen those! Of course, normally on BGS's the Idaho shield is inverted back to black on white, but in that case the Idaho is colored black, which is abnormal and really weird looking from the road.

That reminds me- right at the SH-41/I-90 junction from SH-41 there's a hilariously oversized junction sign for I-90, by far the biggest junction sign I've seen in Idaho

agentsteel53

yes I know exactly where that sign is.  Have you seen the state-named 90 shields in the same area?  Post Falls or Coeur d'Alene; do not remember which ...

Reversing 31 gives us 13.  Now a one -piece US 13/58/460 shield on the Suffolk Bypass

Removing the zero in US 460 gives ... CA 46.  Below is a picture of northbound US 101 approaching CA 46 near Paso Robles, California.  (Picture taken by me.)

Switching those numbers gives us US 64.  Here it is at US 160

Adding a 1 for VA 146. Hopefully someone will break us out of the 46/64 trend! :P

okay fine let's add the extra digit.

this photo clearly needs to be resized, both on shields.aaroads.com and here...

it's a rare no-state-name Nevada shield ... a brief transitional style between the white-background shields with state name, and the modern black-background ones (with state name too).
