Interesting. WSDOT doesn't use the "BEGIN" shield very often. I can't think of any, besides the one at the beginning of the 525 in Lynnwood, and that's missing its shield.

Nonetheless, the BGS backing is probably turning off more than a few people here. Certainly doesn't bother me, though.

Doesn't bother me either, (although I do think it could do without the horizontal line between BEGIN and East) and I think I prefer the green background in situations where one route begins and another ends, as in some of the examples I posted above. That said, it can also be used incorrectly:

MN-15 does end here, but the lanes join US-10 West—obviously US-10 West doesn't start here. It should read "JCT West US-10" instead.

If the local agency is going for more of an actual guide sign (so an LGS), rather than just a guide sign appearance, the line would be unnecessary. But WSDOT frequently uses green backgrounds for reassurance shields (or did, most new signs are just standard black and white unisigns), not to emulate a guide sign I don't believe. Just because they like the consistent (green) look, I guess. And I mean guess. I really have no clue.

That would definitely be a misuse of the "BEGIN" plaque. I could see "END MN-15 / JCT West US-10" as well.

Reassurance shields on a green background seemed to be for the most part a WSDOT thing in the 80's up to the late 90's. I still see them posting a few of this style from time to time, but they have mostly replaced them with the black and white one-piece signs for state routes and US highways, and cutouts for interstates.

As I recall, this SR 531 sign has the old style fabrication sticker that WSDOT used through 1991. 1992 and up, they used a new style sticker with the last two digits of the year very large. Since SR 531 was created in 1992, and this sign has the old style sticker, I would venture to guess that this sign was posted circa 1991.
Alright, this is how it's gonna be!

Similarly, at US 212's east end they have "END 212/BEGIN MN 62" even though that's not the beginning of MN 62.

They did do it properly at the new MN 610 west terminus - "END 610/JCT WEST I-94".

A bit off-kilter begin marker on IN-265 east of I-65.  When are we gonna get a full interstate designation?

I-295 in Massachusetts:

Begin/End signs are kind of rare in Texas, but SH 239 starts where FM 774 ends (at a 90 degree angle) in Austwell:

CR-R52 Peoria, Illinois:

Florida uses END frequently, but much less so BEGIN plaques - probably because maintenance begins seemingly in the middle of the road:

Unusual BEGIN sign for Poweshiek CR F62, where it branches off from Iowa 146. This section of county road used to be Iowa 225 until 2003, which is perhaps why there's a BEGIN sign here. (Or might be because, to stay on NB Iowa 146, you have to angle right. Staying straight goes onto this county road.)

I'll throw some IL "Begins" signs

I played this one (from interstate-guide.com's page on I-290 in IL) in the Route Number Difference Game

ISTHA seems to like these type of signs (from billburmaster.com on various ISTHA Tollway pages)

And more IDOT (interstate-guide.com is credited for first 3 pics, billburmaster.com for IL 394 Begins pic)

I never liked those begin end signs in chicago, I-80, 94, & 90 don't begin or end in that area!

this may be the only one in indiana https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6048084,-87.3372409,3a,15.8y,251.54h,89.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sr1MrNZytMfswrL_fYeSiKQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

All US routes in Tennessee have a hidden state route designation. Interstates, however, do not. This is a relatively-new assembly where I-26 ends, but the freeway continues as US 23. Previously, there was only an "End I-26" sign here.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

BEGIN MN-3 marker posted at the ramps to/from MN-110 WB. Robert St (unsigned MN-952A) continues north behind this picture. West St. Paul, MN, taken yesterday, May 26, 2018.

NDOT has installed the rural "enhanced mileposts" on Franktown Road in Washoe Valley.  The south end gets the deluxe treatment, with an enhanced milepost zero at the start and the shield and banners a few yards on up the road.

The north end, not being at a whole mile, settles for a standard milepost.

Gonna revive this thread with a BEGIN sign for a signed byway: Lake Country Scenic Byway in Walker. It's also the beginning of MN-34, but no banner for that.

Begins signs are very uncommon in Illinois, but here's one at the south end of IL-83 near Dyer, Indiana.

A trio of beginnings from southwestern Indiana last summer..

South end of IN 57 near the Evansville airport:

Beginning of IN 237 just before the bridge to Cannelton from Hawesville, KY:

IN 662 begins at I-69 between Evansville and Newburgh:

And a bonus IL 267 in Jacksonville, IL:

I didn't get a clear shot but IL 43 has a Begin at US 30

They're not common in Iowa, either (this is the third one I know of!) This is the current southern terminus of Iowa 191 at I-680. The route formerly ran southwest all the way to Council Bluffs.
