Photo Enforced Speed Limits in Maryland

Rather recently, the work zone speed limit signs along I-695 near the Charles St. interchange replacement project received a new, lower yellow tab: SPEED LIMIT 50 PHOTO ENFORCED.

Pretty much no one is going below 55 anyway.

They're doing the same thing on I-95 in the ICC construction zone, except they left the speed limit at 65.  The "PHOTO ENFORCED" warning seemed to be unheeded by 99.9% of traffic this morning, and I didn't notice any flash bulbs going off, so......

I guess they got their "PHOTO ENFORCED" signs from the same company that used to supply Radio Shack with the phony "Security System" stickers.

Sounds to me like preliminaries.  While Maryland's new speed camera law allows their use in highway work zones, there's still a vetting process whereby their use needs to be approved by the local jurisdiction.  WTOP ran a story about it last week, and noted that only 3 jurisdictions...Baltimore City and County, and the city of Frederick...were close to approval.

I'm not sure how the law applies to SHA's work zones.

Is this a typical service when cameras are involved, elsewhere or for red-light cameras?

I noticed those signs on I-95 in the ICC zone during my recent trip, and kept my speed at 65 mph. I nearly got run over; very few were heeding the 65 mph limit. I don't remember my radar detector going off through the area so they must not have the cameras in place. I presume the speed would be measured by radar or laser.

Md. extends grace period to speeders

The two mobile cameras will be rotated among work zones across the state. Large signs warning that the cameras are in use are placed in advance of the work zones. So far, they have been used in three locations: Interstate 95 between Routes 198 and 212 (the ICC work zone) in Montgomery County; Interstate 695 at Charles Street in Baltimore County; and a work zone at I-95 near White Marsh.

And they are really milking the "construction zone" for the ICC interchange. They have the photo enforcement extended all the way down to the I-95/495 interchange. Didn't see any mobile photo trucks at either I-95 construction zone today heading north or last Sunday heading south. Nobody seemed to care either judging by how fast some foks drove.

The zone, in my experience, does not extend south of MD 212.  Nevermind that drivers may be "milking" the rules in the sense that they can't issue tickets unless you're going 12 over.
