Title: Bad milk in the 1980s/1990s/2000s
Post by: bandit957 on March 07, 2019, 10:00:08 PM
Anyone remember the era of bad milk?

For a long time, starting around 1981, if you buyed milk at the grocery store, it would often be spoiled - even if it was well within the expiration date. It got progressively worse over the years. I stopped buying milk, because it got to the point where it was spoiled more often than not.

This problem reportedly stopped around 2009. So I started buying milk again, and it hasn't been a problem since.

Um, no.  It must just be you, as our milk usually lasted a week after the expiry date.

How bad was it ... did it ever make you blow groceries?

I didn't throw up, but it tasted bad.

Toothpaste has a similar taste when it's a brand new tube.

I don't ever remember that being an issue. Something like that would have been all over the news around here.

The only milk issue I recall was the one over whether or not cows were treated with the rBGH hormone, and that hubbub only lasted a couple years in the 1990s.

I've never "buyed"  anything. I've never bought bad milk, either.

The thing I find odd is that the organic milk, such as Horizon brand, which presumably isn't supposed to have preservatives or other such things, often has an expiration date several weeks later than the non-organic store brand. I wonder why that is. Before I got married, I often bought Horizon because of that–I didn't use the milk as quickly, so I wanted the one that lasted longer. I no longer do that because my wife likes to bake, so we go through the milk more quickly.

Nope.

I've occasionally bought (not "buyed") milk that stayed good after its expiration date, and bought milk that expired before its expiration date.  I'm also the person who will rummage through the milk cooler looking for a gallon with the latest expiration date.

What irritates me these days is that Kroger is often out of whole milk, but there's whole shelves full of skim milk staring us in the face. I have hypocobalaminemia, so I need whole milk. People actually buy the whole milk, not the skim milk. Yet Kroger will stock about 5 times as much skim milk, which just gathers dust.

That's weird; whenever I go to a grocery store or convenience store looking for 1% or, if absolutely necessary, 2%, all they have is whole milk.

I don't think United Dairy Farmers (a regional convenience store chain) carries whole milk at all anymore. Which is ridiculous, because it's United Dairy Farmers, not United Water Farmers.

Maybe they don't carry it any more because very few people drink whole milk.

Most popular version of milk around here is 2% milk.

Milkfat must be like octane in gasoline, at least around here. In many stores skim milk is usually cheaper than 2%, and 2% is cheaper than whole milk.

Not true around here.  Still, I think I read somewhere that there is some strange geographic patterns as to where people drink whole and where people drink skim.

When I worked at a Wawa convenience store for a short bit, the manager told me that in a cold case, where you can fit 4 jugs of milk across in a row, and where the door opens from the right, people will most often pick the milk from the right-center spot (if you go left to right, 1, 2, 3, 4, they're taking number 3).  And they'll even reach back to grab the next one in the 3 slot, instead of taking the front one from 1, 2 and 4.

And when you actually try to watch it happen, the observation is hilariously correct.  It's just one of those mind-boggling things that humans do.

Now, for you perfectionists, no, not everyone does it.  But if you had the chance to observe that for a while...or even thing what you do in a store, it's a pattern that happens a higher percentage of time!

(Me, I look for the one with the furthest expiration date!)

I would say urban drinks "healthy" non-milks like soy and almond, suburbs drink skim or 1%, rural drinks 2%.

I honestly don't know anyone who drinks whole milk besides babies/young kids. We live in the suburbs, and we usually have both skim and 2% in the house. Skim seems to be the biggest seller at the grocery stores in our area.

On a semi-related note, I can't drink just a plain glass of milk. I used to, as a young kid, but I haven't in probably close to ten years.

Milk is great with cereal, or in a recipe, but the thought of drinking it plain makes me feel a bit queasy.

I get that same feeling with the thought of drinking a glass of whole milk.

Call it milk water all you want, but drinking a tall glass of cold skim milk on a hot day is excellent. For cereal and cooking, though, I like to use one percent.

I think it's mostly a case of what you grew up drinking. When we were kids, our mom always bought 2% milk because the doctor recommended it, and to this day I find whole milk or skim milk revolting (never had 1% as far as I know). I'll buy whole milk if a recipe specifies it, but I won't drink it. My cousins from Brooklyn grew up drinking whole milk and they feel even 2% is too watery.

We bought almond milk once to see what it tasted like. Didn't care for it.

I don't drink milk by itself that often other than with certain desserts (usually chocolate, like brownies or cookies–but not ice cream), but this morning I accidentally drank some of the sludge in the bottom of my coffee mug and milk was excellent for getting rid of the nasty taste.

I'd assume so. I can only drink coffee if I put a ton of sugar and flavorings in it–as such, I pretty much never drink it. Black coffee is nasty.

Yes, and I drink drip coffee black, which you REALLY have to acquire a taste for.

I started in high school and back then it was out of some idiotic "real men do this"  belief I had, but today I just don't like the thought of cream in coffee, and I don't need sweetener in it. Coffee and milk is just fine, though.

I've always consumed my coffee black, going back to when I started drinking it. My parents drank it black; in my father's case, that was for health reasons to do with the sugar. So they didn't have cream around the house and I never got into the habit of using it–unless I'm drinking that New Orleans—style coffee with chicory (I seldom do), which is simply too darn strong without something to cut it. I also have an Indonesian coffee recipe that uses some spices in the brewing and calls for putting coconut milk in it when drinking it. I tried that one both ways and it was better with the coconut milk.

I'm not a coffee drinker either. We weren't allowed to drink it as kids; it was an "adult" drink (although we did drink tea and pop). I tried it a couple of times and really didn't like it. Truth be told, I'm not a fan of hot drinks of any kind, although I will drink hot chocolate. I'd rather have iced tea than hot tea.

I think most people drink coffee for the caffeine. On my Facebook feed, there's almost a stoner culture-type series of posts from people who love their coffee, don't talk to them until they've had their morning coffee, posting pictures of gallon-jug-sized coffee mugs, and so on.

I've never needed a caffeine boost. I drink caffeinated diet soft drinks, because they're the most readily available, but I can just as easily drink a gold-label non-caffeinated Diet Coke as a gray-label caffeinated one.

I like hot tea, and it has some caffeine in it.  Sweetened with Stevia.

That's the excuse I use when having a Coke at 9:30 am...it's how I choose to get my caffeine kick after a poor night's sleep.  I've never been a mud water (err...coffee) person and I don't think I ever will be. It's taken 35 years just to tolerate the smell of the coffee aisle in the grocery store.

I don't drink a lot of milk, so when I need it for cooking, etc. I get soy or almond milk -- not because I'm a health "nut" (get it?), but because it keeps a whole lot longer.

It's taken 35 years just to tolerate the smell of the coffee aisle in the grocery store.

See, I think coffee smells great, but tastes like drain cleaner. I love the smells of coffee at the grocery store.

I don't mind the smell of it either, but just don't have anything for the taste.

Yeah, I find coffee bitter, but I can enjoy it iced from Dunkin with lots of cream and sugar.
As a friend of mine says, "no use burning your mouth for a bad taste!"  :-D

Mom raised us on 2%. I drink whole milk now...and have been for 25 years.

As for cooking, I use whole milk. The more milk fat, the creamier your food will be.

Buttermilk is super-gross. I only use it when making home made biscuits.

I usually drink 1% when I drink it.  I would prefer 2%, but it is a compromise with my Mom since she prefers skim and I don't like skim.

I don't think United Dairy Farmers (a regional convenience store chain) carries whole milk at all anymore. Which is ridiculous, because it's United Dairy Farmers, not United Water Farmers.
Maybe they don't carry it any more because very few people drink whole milk.

Everyone I know drinks whole milk.

same i don't know anyone who drinks skim milk.

No, one time I went to a coffee shop where everything was stacked vertically and the baristas were on zip lines, like that restaurant in Vegas where the wine cellar is several stories high and the sommeliers go up and down zip lines to retrieve the wine.

I remember a store in Hampton, Va that consistently had bad milk in the late 1980's. When my mom sent me or my brother to get some, she told us to make sure we "lean the bottle" to see if the milk "sticks".

Most people I've seen lately drinks 2%. I don't drink plain milk myself no matter what percent it is, but will down a vanilla bean milkshake in a heartbeat  :sombrero:

As for everything else in this crazy ass thread, I hate both coffee & bananas, I drink tea hot or cold  with or without lemon, and I still can't believe they did surgery on a grape.

Yes. There was a huge stink in the 1980s when a bunch of cows tested positive for heptachlor which ruined the milk and they had to pour it all out.

Fun fact: "Bad milk" is the literal translation of the Spanish colloquialism Mala leche, which means "bad intentions when doing something harmful to someone" (according to Wiktionary).

Yet 20 years later, they were still selling it around here.

I only drink whole milk. I have a milk allergy so I have to buy lactose free milk, which is actually regular milk with the lactase enzyme added. I always get the Walmart brand because the Lactaid brand of milk contains fillers like carrageenan and the Walmart brand is pure milk plus lactase. The lactase doesn't change the flavor of the milk. Unfortunately, it is expensive and I rarely get it.

2% and 1/2% milk are to whole milk as Bud Light is to real beer.

Whole milk is the only kind I like.
I am lactose intolerant, so it make me go, but, then again, so does just about everything else, so what's the difference really?
Back in the 90's. my father had me try lactose-free milk, it didn't help
2%.1% or skim milk is nasty. It looks like paint washout to me.
Almond milk is nasty too.
