Monterey Park, CA and Buffalo, NY:
710 + 290 = 1000
10 + 990 = 1000

Time to be clever - any other 3di interchanges (there are no others involving a 2di) that add up to 1,000?

There's only one "pair" left to find (I put "pair" in quotes because you'll need to think outside the box on this one.)  :eyebrow:

BTW: Grand Rapids & Orlando don't count, since they aren't junctions of two 2-di Interstates.

(From Reply #23) Oh, yeah and what did I win for getting part #1 right?  I could use a plasma TV...

Chris (xonhulu) - it looks like you've got I-skills!
Your prize is an all-expenses paid trip to any city of your choice that currently has a multiplex of four Interstates.  :-P

Nah, more like an after-effect of my job: I'm a math teacher, and unfortunately I always notice number patterns, probably much to my friends' chagrin.

And I'm packing my bags now!!!!

Um...this is a long shot, but it deals with AZ's funky numbering scheme:

Arizona/Harrisburg, PA:  I-17 + I-83 = 100
I-19 + I-81 = 100

Why?  Because I-10 which connects these two interstates, is a continuation numbering-wise of I-19.

I think the last pair is this:
Kent, TX and Elyria, OH/ Lake Station, IL

10+90=100
20+80=100

That's correct!

That last "pair" was a little tricky because the I-10/I-20 interchange is in the middle of nowhere, about 10 miles from the unincorporated town of Kent, TX (population around 60).  The I-80/I-90 interchange actually has 2 locations (western - Lake Station, IN; eastern - Elyria, OH), with a 277-mile multiplex in between.

That combination is really clever.  I can't find any other pairs yet that add up to 1000...has anyone else?   :-/

Here's an additional idea: how about finding pairs of cities with a 2di & 3-di interstate junction where the 2-di's add up to 100 and the 3-di's add up to 1000.

For example - Ft. Worth (TX)/near Princeton (IL): 20 & 820 / 80 & 180

I'm sure there are many others - I haven't tried to look for them yet.

That example would also work with the following other I-180s
Lincoln, NE
near Milton, PA
Cheyenne, WY

Don't forget Middle of Nowhere, IL :P

Chicago/New Orleans  I-90/I-190 and I-10/I-910 (which is US 90 Business - an unsigned interstate) (insert Worcester, Rapid City or Buffalo for Chicago if you wish)
Los Angeles/Buffalo  I-10/I-110 and I-90/990 (Insert El Paso, Baton Rouge, Biloxi or Pensacola for Los Angeles if you wish)

Um, 990 + 110 = 1100, not 1000.  Likewise 910 + 190
