Title: Street view update
Post by: J Route Z on July 25, 2021, 01:41:36 AM
How often does Google Maps update Street View? I remember 2019 imagery took a year, but this time it seems like it is taking longer, especially for the eastern US.

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. They have seem to got the west just fine, but the eastern states such as North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, need updating.

Also I think this thread is better posted in General Highway Talk.

It really depends. Some places have 2021 imagery and some places have 2009 imagery.

And of course, some places still have the original 2007 imagery that looks like it was captured using a potato.

Two-lane highways in the west have this issue sometimes, even US highways.

I also wonder why the quality is terrible in that imagery.

Good-quality digital cameras were a lot more expensive in 2007 than they are now.

So for North Carolina it's from March to December....

I assume it gets updated whenever another GSV driver goes down that highway.

Why can't it just be as simple as that?

Most to all of US 21 in South Carolina from I-95 (Exit 42) north to SC 64 still has 2008 street-view, but once you pass that intersection there is updated GMSV from 2015 - although, this is in a pretty rural area.

It's all about perspective, when GMSV first came out perhaps around 2007, the image quality looked crystal-clear, but 14 years later with vastly improved technology and being used to much better images, the older street-view just doesn't look the same anymore.  :-D

But nonetheless, it's a treat. And if there's both 2007 and up-to-date street view, that's a neat way to see how the road and/or scenery has changed in those 14 years. They used to have a similar feature on Google Earth where you could see historical satellite, and after a series of updates the past few years, the feature appears to be lost. If only that was still around..  :hmmm:

I wonder how do you bring the NCDOT imagery onto Google Earth? I know Charlotte, Fayetteville, and Raleigh areas got new imagery (which are only a few months old) but Greenville still has the 2018 imagery with the Southwest Bypass and 10th st connector under construction.

I imagine at that point the obstacle might be conflict with the governments of those countries (especially somewhere like North Korea), since Google has already got extensive street-view in a number of countries across the globe now, which is definitely nice.

I don't think Syria, or Iran would be countries that would get street view. Even India Because

1. Syria has a war going on and we have no embassy with them.
2. We have no embassy for Iran.
3. India said "no" to capturing street view there.

I remember reading a trip report from someone who drove from Lubumbashi to Kinshasa sometime in the last decade. It took them a few weeks, and they barely made it because the roads were so bad. Their Land Rover physically broke midway through the journey and it was a major ordeal to get replacement parts (because the auto parts stores were in either Lubumbashi or Kinshasa and they had a hard time finding anyone else who was able and willing to make the trip to middle-of-nowhere DR Congo).

Places like that are unlikely to be covered by Google anytime soon because of the danger and expense of doing so, with comparatively little return (if those countries can't yet manage to build passable roads between their largest cities, they're probably not in a place to offer Internet connections to the people along those roads either, so Google's not going to be able to sell enough ads in those places to make it worth offering Street View coverage.

And I'm pretty sure it's all dirt roads. Republic of Congo is definitely safer.

How would lack of a US embassy in a country prevent someone from driving a GSV car there?  Or just, you know, driving around in Iran with a selfie stick out the window and uploading the imagery to Google (https://goo.gl/maps/fHh1h1aLG3mtnnga7)?

Some places in Canada need also updates. The Deh Cho bridge is opened since 2012 and they didn't updated when they surveyed in 2009.

Now if only Google streetview cover the James Bay road and the Trans-Labrador highway...

I go back to when Microsoft had StreetView (or it might have even been Amazon), circa 2005-2006. Even now Bing's StreetView doesn't even cover cities like Charleston.

Amazon's StreetView they had only covered like 15 cities.

Google is a US company.

Google's total assets are half of Iran's nominal GDP. For all the money (and thus power) Google has, it may as well be its own country at this point.

Same goes for Facebook. Heard on the radio yesterday that Facebook's annual revenue is more than the entire budget of the city of East Palo Alto right outside their HQ.

Google maps is my go-to for most things when I need a map, because of GSV. Though I use Apple maps too because their transit map is way better. Apple have pretty much all US/Canada urban rail transit systems and some BRT lines (like Houston's uptown BRT) mapped out, as well as Amtrak and VIA rail, while Google maps is still missing some notable LRT systems like Minneapolis and Calgary, let alone the BRT and long-distance rail. And for transport in China, I use Baidu maps.

If Bing update and do a bigger survey and coverage with Bing Streetside and add Apple if they decide to let Apple Maps widely available for Windows so we can use their "Look Around" (you can only access to Apple Maps without Look Around by using DuckDuckGo maps or Satellites.pro), that would motivate Google to do some GSV updates.

GSV is the main reason why I will never use another mapping software.
And why is that?
Because I love GSV.

Would be awesome.

China won't let Google in (at least on terms that Google will accept), but has its own StreetView equivalent through Baidu Maps.

As Kphoger points out, for Iran, Google has a very small amount of user-sourced coverage (rural example (https://www.google.com/maps/@35.856381,51.058552,3a,63.4y,172.17h,85.59t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipP08xkp_1RWYc5-jd7oQeqJERNb38KKX4HLDNL3!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipP08xkp_1RWYc5-jd7oQeqJERNb38KKX4HLDNL3%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-1.0609405-ya65.20035-ro5.0237136-fo100!7i7680!8i3840)).

Given that large central Asian countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have (apparently) zero StreetView coverage, I'm surprised Russia is covered as extensively as it is.

^ How about Germany? Coverage is very sparse and I haven't seen any newer than like 2009. Was there some beef between Google and Germany at some point?

Germany is light blue, meaning it has partial coverage.

Google called a kibosh (https://techland.time.com/2011/04/11/alas-there-will-be-no-more-google-street-view-in-germany/) on acquiring new imagery in 2011 when the Germans raised privacy concerns.  Imagery acquired to that date (mainly in large cities or urban regions like Berlin, Nuremberg, Hamburg, Munich, and the Ruhr district) is still available, and user-sourced material has been added for some rural corridors.  As of 2020 Google was apparently planning to resume collecting StreetView imagery in Germany, but I suspect covid has gotten in the way.

An easy way (at least on desktop) to find the imagery that is available is to zoom out and click (not hold down) Pegman.

I was worried if there was some dispute between Google and Spain as other countries started to get post-"End of the World (as we knew it)" imagery (which allowed me to debunk they had stopped getting it due to the coronavirus and the mask thing) while mine was still behind in 2019. But the finding of some isolated April 2021 imagery near Zaragoza definitely put that to an end.

As for other mapping services, I also make extensive use of OpenStreetMap, mainly to find county/provincial lines, and as support to my Street View trips :sombrero:. I also use Baidu Maps mainly to check if a new metro line in Mainland China has opened.

And what does that have to do with Iranians driving cars around Iran with cameras on top?

Google is a US company.

Google's total assets are half of Iran's nominal GDP. For all the money (and thus power) Google has, it may as well be its own country at this point.

Same goes for Facebook. Heard on the radio yesterday that Facebook's annual revenue is more than the entire budget of the city of East Palo Alto right outside their HQ.
Heh.  People have been making comparisons between companies and countries for decades.  Walmart used to be valued higher than the GDP of Greece when I was in college back at the turn of the century.

Also, see the movie Network from over 40 years ago.  This is hardly a new phenomenon of companies acting like countries.

Regarding Iran, I suspect that security concerns might play a bigger factor than international relations.  It's easy for me to imagine the Iranian government disallowing anyone–citizen or foreigner–to drive around the country with a big camera on top.  While public photography is legal in Iran, I've read an account of people's drones having been confiscated.  Also, photography near government/military installations is not permitted.

I've actually found some September 2021 imagery already appearing in the Seattle area.

For example: https://goo.gl/maps/w6wbUbPJxFSZ7b5u8

I photographed this Street View car in the area on September 26:

Looking at a random dot, it looks like some faces are not even completely blurred out! https://www.google.com/maps/@47.4046974,-61.8345146,3a,46.4y,274.17h,71.99t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipMiauUvd2cLvUrXdeMWrDIh5aq1u2I03yg0DTvV!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipMiauUvd2cLvUrXdeMWrDIh5aq1u2I03yg0DTvV%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya260-ro0-fo100!7i17100!8i8550?hl=en

Could be a ferry reason though cause the street view in Ocracoke HAS NOT been updated in over 10 years. https://www.google.com/maps/@35.1419414,-75.889091,3a,75y,106.23h,85.02t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1swrY76iFQYP87XQPEPMzUgA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DwrY76iFQYP87XQPEPMzUgA%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D155.55737%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i3328!8i1664

it looks like some faces are not even completely blurred out!

One of them isn't a face (it's the back of someone's head), and the other one is blocked by a different face.

Yeah, but if you look around, you can see more visible faces. Not kidding.

Quite a lot of new (August-September 2021) imagery appeared in Québec, with the occasional first-time imagery, such as this road (https://www.google.com/maps/@48.0558352,-69.2508852,3a,75y,120.84h,80.82t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sbsRkvMtAVCyLjh1Ip-qY6g!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DbsRkvMtAVCyLjh1Ip-qY6g%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D223.2817%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en) and this one (https://www.google.com/maps/@47.5162313,-69.9470824,3a,75y,285.34h,85.61t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sF2z1tQ6fnnNfd19MGtEzZw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DF2z1tQ6fnnNfd19MGtEzZw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D2.923378%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en) (the latter is sort of a pet peeve of mine, as they chose to cover that road while ignoring nearby QC-132 that has no coverage).
Even Raleigh has a good number of them too.

For fun, here's a shot of the new I-40 bridge that's under construction! - here (https://www.google.com/maps/@35.7538024,-78.5966533,3a,75y,101.14h,89.03t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s703cjhNRFORt3n7P0ccsnw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3D703cjhNRFORt3n7P0ccsnw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D244.01758%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192)

Here's an even better view (https://www.google.com/maps/@35.7536202,-78.5960319,3a,75y,268.73h,82.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQg0TUfi94pQWa2Nj9dEYiw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) from the current I-40 viaduct.
Also neat.

Wait, you live on an island? That's so rad.

Shame they don't have coverage of it, because it looks beautiful in the user-submitted photos.

Well, I was born there, but I moved many times between there and Québec City in the last few years. Anyways, yeah, I almost want to petition Google to do so, considering it wouldn't be THAT hard to cover it.

They could also go the route of Saint Pierre, which must have gotten fed up with Google not driving there, because they went ahead and did it all themselves.

Regarding the face discussion, it's worth noting that anything with a dot is user-submitted photospheres, not Google imagery.  I don't believe Google blurs faces and whatnot on third party imagery.  Or at least not photos and photospheres.

The islands comment got me curious, so I decided to look around and see what local ferry-only islands have Street View coverage:

Modern (post-2011): Vashon Island
Ancient (2007 to 2010): San Juan Island, Anderson Island, Guemes Island
None: Lummi Island, Lopez Island, Orcas Island, Shaw Island, Hat/Gedney Island, McNeil Island, Squaxin Island

Honorable mention: Point Roberts (no coverage)

I hope they'll update the streetview on Rivière-Verte Road near TCH-85 (formely TCH-185) soon now then that gap is being upgraded to freeway. https://goo.gl/maps/ZUnuzDjyUhW5xcJn9

This streetview showing Glenday Road is now replaced by an extension of A-410 and still isn't updated yet. https://goo.gl/maps/AscqYJAstg3wKZim9  Same for NWT-3 where the Deh Cho bridge over the Mackenzie River is now open since a decade ago. https://goo.gl/maps/KSTBLthmUQ33zqy66

Besides the Iles-de-la-Madeleine, I wish then Streetview will cover the Bay James Road and the Trans-Labrador Highway.  Should we wish then Bing Streetside cover also Canada and Apple allow Apple maps to being used on Windows to wake up and shake the Streetview guys?
