Amusing how the AZ 51 and AZ 202 shields are much larger than the shield for the I-10 pullthrough!

First portion of the trip home: Schurz, Nevada to Topaz Lake (where the California state line is).

The start of Alternate US 95...

...which is then immediately signed as US 95A.

And finally back in California en route to the Bay.

Route 89's southern terminus is not far from the Nevada/California border.

I have to ask.  Why was Buttonwillow blacked out on this sign?

I think the left turn slot there got blocked off some time ago

Thanks.  This makes a lot of sense.

I looked into this a little.  First, the blacked out language is for Bakersfield, not Buttonwillow.  Second, here is the location on google maps:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Boron,+CA+93516/@34.9988021,-117.6091225,16z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x80ebaba3b8746667:0xd301cfcda10abb70!2sButtonwillow,+CA!3b1!8m2!3d35.400517!4d-119.4695619!3m4!1s0x80c3c6d5c3e03063:0xd490e8b868fa87c2!8m2!3d34.9994199!4d-117.6497823!5m1!1e2

The intersection of Twenty Mule Team (TMT) and Old 58.

TMT was the original US 466/ CA 58 through this area.  THen, a bypass of Boron was built.  The state highway followed TMT to the east and Old 58 to the west and TMT to the west was the business route.  Some point later, the 4-lane bypass of Boron was built, and that became the newer 58 and Old 58 was left off as an orphan.  Now, you could no longer make the turn from TMT to Old 58 with the intent of reaching Bakersfield, since Old 58 became blocked by the new 58 freeway, so the sign was blacked out.

Quite interesting.

The next time you go to Florence, Alabama, make sure you're there early enough to swing by the lobby of 201 South Court Street. There's literally dozens of gold records on the wall, not to mention several other historical artifacts.
