If someone can clue me in on how to embed from Flickr, I would greatly appreciate it.  All I ever get is the link and not the actual photo.

Hope that helps!

Good pix by the way...

US 101 is THE backbone of the Pacific coast from Bandon OR to Willits CA.  Industry, tourism and local traffic would be gone or severely crippled without it being in functioning condition in BOTH states.

Thanks for the assist on embedding.

Excellent quality photos - it makes me wish the photos continued westward.  I saw the news report on June 15 that all regular (non-tolled) main lanes are now open. I just moved from Dallas to Houston on June 12, so I'll probably make a trip to see the finished product when the toll lanes are open.

Wow, just wow, so the upper deck is done all the way through?

Yes, the free lanes are complete and it's back to 4 lanes in each direction between I-35E and DNT, which had been reduced to 3 in each direction so they could get the frontage roads and bypasses done first. The completion date for the entire project was scheduled to be December, but they're clearly well ahead of schedule, and it won't surprise me if the rest of the toll lanes open 2-3 months early if the weather stays dry.

I really need to make a trip out there to check it out. Plus, In-n-Out burger.  :sombrero:

That would be 2 along LBJ, 635/Coit and 635/Midway.

They didn't make quite the splash in DFW they were expecting (there are already tons of burger choices in north TX), but IINM, none of the initial ones have closed.

I was out there last month and saw some of this including the construction of the hot lanes going on.  I even drove over the High Five flyovers which was neat.

Anyway, great photos!  My batteries went dead and could not find a Walgreens as in the Metroplex they have not placed them yet on every intersection competing with CVS like elsewhere.  So I had to use my video camera which takes not so great stills until I found a Dollar General in Plano off US 75 to get recharged.

The closest Walgreens if you're ever back around to that part of LBJ-635:
Coit/Belt Line, Montfort/Belt Line, Valley View/Josey, Preston/Forest

So no, not on every corner, but several corners around north TX.  There used to be one right at LBJ/Preston, but oddly enough, it closed after the LBJ construction messed up traffic for them.

Thanks I will remember that.

According to this blog post in the Dallas Morning News, the cost of the project increased from $2.7 to $3.1 billion. The blog post provides no additional info on who covered the overrun and why it occurred.

Just drove on this yesterday for the first time. I had no idea it was already finished. I do have one question about it: Including toll and frontage road lanes, at the widest point, is it wider than the Katy Freeway? Maybe I've just been in Austin too long and have gotten used to small freeways, but the LBJ is huge!

Nope. At its widest point (14 lanes) it is only more than half the width of the Katy Freeway.

The Katy Freeway in Houston, just West of the I-610 interchange is colossal in size. But the newly expanded LBJ is very impressive in its scale too. At its widest point just West of the US-75 "High Five" interhchange it is very wide -a lot more than just half the width of the Katy.

Here is an image of the Katy Freeway at its widest point. It's roughly 500' across from one far edge of the frontage road to the other.

Here's a view of the LBJ Freeway just West of US-75. The screen shot was taken at the same 1000' altitude as the previous Katy image. It measures about 460' across from one far edge of the frontage road to the other.

The LBJ Freeway is arguably more visually interesting than the Katy Freeway due to the changing nature of the express lanes, going below and above the free local lanes.
