Boulder landed in the middle of the highway last night and has the highway closed down between Silverton and Ouray. Pretty big detour through Telluride at the moment.

This was a University of Colorado prank, was it? Moving an entire city would be difficult.

I wouldn't wish going to Telluride on my worst enemy.

Why out of curiosity? Not my favorite mountain town either...

The very little experience I have with Telluride is with the pretentiousness of their Twitter account.

Unaware of that, but yeah, the town is pretty boujee which is why I don't care for it. I also dislike Aspen. Despite its ritziness, I don't mind Vail.

Tell those Twitter folk that Black Bear Pass is a short cut.

Why is it called the Million Dollar Highway anyway?

Max Rockatansky

Because it was alleged to have cost that much to construct south of Ouray.

No official reason. Per the Google AI:

Similarly the Superior-Miami Highway (was US 180 and became US 60) also had the "Million Dollar Highway" moniker affixed to it when it was built in the 1920s.  That was a lot more solidified given that the Arizona Highways Magazine used the name a ton whenever they mentioned Queen Creek Canyon.

There's a reason why I have switched to Duckduckgo for searches. The AI hype has resulted in some truly mediocre products being unleashed...and it's just going to get worse in the next few years.

My personal hatred for Telluride is because unless you have a heavy duty, 4×4, high clearance vehicle, there is only one way in and one way out to Downtown Telluride proper, which is about 3-4 miles from CO-145.  And the road is 2-lane 35 MPH between the roundabouts, then 15 MPH thru the town proper for about 2 miles, depending on how far you go in.

And CO-145, is a winding 2-laner with few passing opportunities. And you always get stuck behind someone going 15-20 MPH below the speed limit.

Some of the other Colorado ski towns are a slog to drive through as well, but most have multiple lanes and/or alternate parallel roads.

Aspen is almost like another Telluride except that you go from a 4-lane divided 55 MPH highway to a 2-lane 25-35 MPH road with poorly timed traffic lights.  And in the winter, when Independence Pass is closed, it's another one way in/one way out scenario.
