Title: AARoads shield gallery updates
Post by: agentsteel53 on May 30, 2009, 01:36:12 AM
this link shows updates made in the last day:

www.aaroads.com/shields/main.php?new=1 (//www.aaroads.com/shields/main.php?new=1)

That link *should* stay functional, even as we work diligently on getting the shield gallery into its final form.  If we change the PHP, we'll definitely give the new link!

Today, within about 22-24 hours of this writing, if you click that link, you may see 55 new photos of old highway markers courtesy of Michael Summa.  This covers the states of Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, and Minnesota.

We'll be adding many more sign photos that he has either taken himself or accumulated from random sources.

Nice collection of photos. On the Illinois page there's a US 40 shield in the interstate section, though. :P

I'll gather some photos from Virginia and send them your way.

At this time, I hereby give permission for my photos to be used on the AARoads shield gallery.  But rather than sending pictures that I choose to send over, I am inviting you to go to my Flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/) to pick and choose the photos you would like to use for the gallery.  I plan on adding more road and shield photos to my Flickr page as time allows.

Actually, do you have problems with watermarks? The reason I didn't just give you guys permission to use all my photos is because I was worried about whether you'd want to given that many of my recent photos are watermarked. I've been making the watermarks transparent since November, though.

Of course, like I said I have watermark-free versions if you'd rather use those.

If you have no problems with watermarks, then feel free to use anything you see on http://www.flickr.com/photos/coredesatchikai (http://www.flickr.com/photos/coredesatchikai) (shields, signs, etc).

Doug - thanks, we will pillage mercilessly :)

Will - we don't like watermarks; do you have the non-watermarked versions on your flickr anywhere?

I figured you didn't, so I already started gathering them into a folder so I can put them up on Picasa or Photobucket for you to grab. Still working on that, though. :P

Also, like I said, a lot of my photos aren't watermarked, since I didn't start using them until mid-last year. I'll still save you some trouble and put them in the same place for y'all.

Eh, it's not a big deal to me. This Picasa gallery (http://picasaweb.google.com/coredesat/HighwayShieldsForAARoads?authkey=Gv1sRgCIr8-Y_xq4nltAE#) has 35 photos of various shields in it. I have more, but I need to get them off my external hard drive.

Be advised that two of them are from New Jersey! :P

watermarks are a minimal amount of protection to the photographer (who these days *doesn't* photoshop them out before pirating the image for his own nefarious purposes??) and a major eyesore to the viewer.

Feel free to snag any of the shield images from my Picasa sets for the gallery. (Fair warning - my camera's "date" is stuck on 3/28/2008, but I can tell you the dates on them - just PM me as needed on here.)

www.aaroads.com/shields/main.php?new=1 (//www.aaroads.com/shields/main.php?new=1)

added some Montana and a whole lot of North Carolina.  We need more '61 spec North Carolina shields ... we've got a whopping one... NC switched to the larger numbers as early as 1976 as evidenced by a Michael Summa photo from that year.

did a slew of New Jersey, and a bit of Nevada, and started New York.  NY is about half-done right now ...

also check out New Hampshire, Nebraska, and North Dakota, since I've done massive updates to those more recently than I've posted here.

BTW, you guys interested in a picture of possibly the last surviving Virginia I-77 shield with the state name in it that is still in the field?

Not anymore. :P

The reason they aren't pillaging my Flickr mercilessly is because some of my photos have watermarks on them (they just say "Will Weaver 2008/9", but they're still watermarks). For the most part, that's easily resolved, but I already sent some non-watermarked photos their way (on that Picasa album).

That's a weird one, since as best as I can tell, US 50 and US 240 never shared pavement.  I'll have to double-check when I get home, but the only place they *MIGHT* have shared pavement would've been on 23rd St NW near the Lincoln Memorial.  And I'm pretty sure US 50 has always used Constitution Ave, which would make that sign even more in error since WB 50 would have gone SOUTH on 23rd St to access the Memorial Bridge (US 50's crossing of the Potomac before the I-66 bridge was built).

So you're saying DC posted a sign in error?  Never! (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/dc/circles)

haven't really posted about recent updates ... I've added a bunch of photos of Scott Broady's collection of old highway markers, as well as Michael Summa photos from GA, IL, and IN.  And most importantly, some great photos by Jim Lindsay from the early 1960s (!) in OH, PA, and NJ.  Check out the then-and-now pair of photos from the former terminus of US-206.

I happen to see you guys added my US-17/FL-5 shield to the gallery.

Just one comment on that.  Here's the current caption for it:
QuoteFlorida 5 is the hidden designation for US-1. Occasionally, it is signed by mistake. Photo by James Mast.

Here's what I think it should be: (changes in bold)
QuoteFlorida 5 is the hidden designation for most of US-1 and parts of US-17. Occasionally, it is signed by mistake. Photo by James Mast.

The main reason I suggest this is because people might be confused because of the US-17 shield beside it. ;)

just added a crapton of New York, including your state highway 9N.  I tend to do states in big spurts, regardless of who sent me photos.  When someone sends me photos, I save them locally on my own HD, and then when I feel like doing a particular state, then up goes a lot from that state.

How much time elapsed between the two sets of photos? It's funny that both shields look worn but the directional banner does not. And it appears that the rusted bolts are the main cause of the wear on the two shields...

Those would have been awesome to see in real life. But, with Jim Lindsay's picture, it's the rectangular overhead signs on non-expressway routes that still look the same. Thought they would have had keys on them, at least.

With the picture on your site, it's odd they didn't use a cut-out for it.

A photo I wish I had gotten during my trek down I-59 last year, but for some reason didn't get, was the sign with the logo for the country music group Alabama on it near Fort Payne. There was a slight brouhaha in my office earlier in the year about how a sign with the logo for a country music group ("Halfway to Hazard") wasn't MUTCD compliant and should be replaced with a sign without the logo if the sign ever became damaged or went missing. This on a small sign at a county line on a rural two-lane road ... and here the group Alabama's logo is plastered on a big green guide sign on an interstate!

added several hundred new shields - mainly Ohio, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, with the occasional other state, including some nice older California shields.

Some photos from the Caltrans library coming soon, featuring 1950s guide signs; I just have to get the written permissions to display them, which should be straightforward since we do have an informal verbal agreement.

It should, but it requires clicking 9,000 or so links in conjunction with going manually through the database. We have been fixing them slowly, but can only take so much of that in one setting...

well, I'm about to make a modification to the PHP that sets the "b0rked" flag in the database every time a page is loaded with no photos to display.  So that'll help us zero in on the problematic entries quicker.

added some great Jim Lindsay photos from the 1970s, from a variety of states.

in the next few days I'll be adding the last of Michael Summa's major sweep through his archives - the W states - and then it'll be time for the next phase of the shield gallery, where I use all the accumulated knowledge from the last year and half or so of doing research, and come up with signing history pages for all states.

It'll be an ambitious project - maybe another year and half to get through everything! - but by the end I hope to have a page for every state that depicts the evolution of their signage practices.

did I mention that in parallel to this, I'll be going through a backlog of 5000+ photos, including all my travels and contributions from generous souls left and right, so the gallery stands to expand another 50% despite it being declared "complete"?  And there'll even be a few miscellaneous articles, like a page devoted to all those changes in California freeway guide sign specifications between 1955 and 1959.

that's right, we are not satisfied with being the most comprehensive source of highway sign information on the internet - we're constantly improving and expanding!

I'm starting up the series of articles focusing on historical signage.  The first one is dedicated to the signs of the Midland Trail, 1915 to 1923.

(//www.aaroads.com/shields/articles/midland/photo%20small%20Midland%20Goldfield.jpg) (https://www.aaroads.com/blog/2010/07/25/the-midland-trail/)

the Midland Trail was the first federal route to connect southern California to the rest of the US - branching off the Lincoln Highway in Ely, Nevada and heading to Los Angeles.  The route was added to the US highway system in 1937 as US 6.

Snag this one quickly. This is the old toll booth on the south end of what is now known as the Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville. Now carrying US 31, it used to carry US 31E (and later US 460) as evidenced by the huge cutout US 31E shield above the toll booth.

that is huge!  is that a 36 incher?  and also, is that a style that was used elsewhere?  I've seen what must be a 36" cutout used in Kentucky but with different fonts:

When did the Shield Gallery pages get organized by state, and then type of road? It used to be each state had all the shields on one page, now it's been changed where I have to further click for Interstate, state highway, etc. It's okay, but seems to just introduce one extra step that's unnecessary.

When did the Shield Gallery pages get organized by state, and then type of road? It used to be each state had all the shields on one page, now it's been changed where I have to further click for Interstate, state highway, etc. It's okay, but seems to just introduce one extra step that's unnecessary.

both ways of looking at things have been around for a while.  from the main page, click "browse the gallery" and then choose your favorite state.

Hmm... Maybe my default setting changed or something, because I never knew it was organized that way until earlier today.

Found this gem while sitting in traffic in Portsmouth recently:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg241.imageshack.us%2Fimg241%2F6910%2F110410172701.jpg&hash=64b708ce16070e74dce75840fb21902a2e41b10b)
The shield gallery only has its Norfolk counterpart, and I don't think I've ever seen even a recent photo of this type of sign at all. Use away, credit to Connor Lauzon.

On the other side of the road, by the way, is a state-named I-264 shield, but its picture did not come out good enough to really tell.

Alex & Jake, I remember you used to have a picture that showed the I-279, I-376, & I-579 PA State Named shields (http://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=40.442665,-79.990983&spn=0.001494,0.003484&z=19&layer=c&cbll=40.442586,-79.991071&panoid=Zb0UYSnppJwJ_Lb-2UOm1g&cbp=12,11.67,,2,1.66) here in Pittsburgh, which was the only place you could find all of them together (the only one I can currently find in the gallery is the I-579 (//www.aaroads.com/shields/show.php?image=PA19795791) shield by-itself now).

Anyways, I have some bad new about that threesome.  They have removed the I-279 shield from it. :(  Don't have a current picture, but I'll get one when I go Downtown next time.

Yeah, there's a StreetView link of the same assembily in my post above.

But here's that link again: I-279, I-376, & I-579 PA State Named shields (http://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=40.442665,-79.990983&spn=0.001494,0.003484&z=19&layer=c&cbll=40.442586,-79.991071&panoid=Zb0UYSnppJwJ_Lb-2UOm1g&cbp=12,11.67,,2,1.66)

Just to addon, I do have two pictures of that assembily before the I-279 shield was removed.  One with the Button Copy dirrection sign above it and one with the new Clearview dirrection sign above it.

I came across a very old CA-118 shield pic the other day. It's the old black and white, button copy shields that date from the 1950s and early 60s:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv45%2FNidoking%2FHighway%2520Shields%2520and%2520Concepts%2FCalifornia%2FOld_white_CA_118_shield.jpg&hash=b83acd4d4a57cfbab0bf8d3b0e3a78614d453a9a)

Here it is, cropped:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv45%2FNidoking%2FHighway%2520Shields%2520and%2520Concepts%2FCalifornia%2FOld_white_CA_118_shield-1.jpg&hash=bf8a5e4c08beb68d0e0346d629533e92348035f1)

Not sure if this is on the gallery or not, but if you want to, you could add it. The original photographer released it into the public domain, so it's free to use.

And what's neat about this whole thing is that this old 1950s-era shield is located on Sunland Blvd. in the Sun Valley, which CA-118 once traveled through but no longer does.

EDIT: Whelp, turns out a pic very similar to this one, but at night, is already on the gallery.

The picture was taken on 02/28/07.

Shields are now gone. :(  Checked out the location earlier today.  They have now been replaced with a new non-state named pair.

A few more candidates for the gallery of some very new routes. So new that the signs weren't even supposed to go up yet (Interstate 41 is still pending approval). Nonetheless, WisDOT signed it for a day on a new overpass, then quickly covered up the shields.

But not before yours truly snapped a pic for AARoads:

I also do have better quality images if needed.

As an added bonus, in the post below it, a construction zone US 45 shield done on as a Wisconsin route.

And AARoads does have my permission to use these images, so long as no money is being made directly off it (then I'll demand my cut. ;) ).

(Interstate 41 is still pending approval).
No, it's approved. Once completed to interstate standards, it can be redesignated as I-41.

I think he means congressional approval to waive weight limits for the interstate highway.  WisDOT would withdraw the application if that is not passed.

What I meant is final approval. The entire route is already up to interstate standards. All that's left is an environmental study, some paperwork to be filed, and a Senate waiver of the weight limit (a Wisconsin stipulation). Otherwise, yes, it is approved as an interstate, and the approved number is I-41. They just can't sign it quite yet.

The example with the I-41 shields reminds me of how one BGS in Sacramento was created with US99 instead of CA99 headed south to Fresno - - - but that was quickly corrected.  To a lesser extent it reminds me of the blue bags that covered the I-49 markers when they first went up along US71 here in Missouri...

Is it just a Wyoming thing to have mileage supplements beneath route shields?

I have seen this in other places, usually in one or 1/2 mile increments, such as California and Arizona. It's not too common to see the increments in feet. One example is Junction California 53 signs found along California 20 near the city of Clearlake. I'd have to go looking around to try to find you other good examples, but I have seen them.

You've got the mix of the white and yellow lettering on the brown background. I still remember FHWA getting on NYSDOT's case for using yellow lettering on brown signs in the Adirondacks and Catskills.

I emailed these to Jake.  I just got this 1926 spec NJ Route 27 shield:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi722.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww222%2Fpb4fjk%2Fsigns%2FNJ27_zpsi05n89kx.jpg&hash=20407b0c9981df3a18d49438c1a221a1b38133ca) (http://s722.photobucket.com/user/pb4fjk/media/signs/NJ27_zpsi05n89kx.jpg.html)

And this more modern NJ Route 28 shield was found leaning against my neighbor's trash can a few years ago.

Jake doesn't update the shield gallery anymore. I haven't either in a long time...

The script is hosed and until its revised, it is probably not going to be updated.

Is there any chance of creating a photo gallery of the shields? Or something where users can contribute?

(Although, I guess it would need moderation.)

I hired a programmer to redo the script to both make the gallery mobile friendly and easier to update. I had it in mind also to open it to contributers. But months later, still waiting for him to complete that and other site work...

I am meeting with him on Saturday evening. He asked me this morning about the shield gallery and what I wanted to do with it. Was thinking of keeping the format similar, but with a better rendering method (which will be accomplished via Wordpress). As for changes or enhancements, I'm open to suggestions. And if he knows flash, I'll inquire about having the shield generator fixed (which Jake is in support of already).

Per Jake, the code is depreciated and essentially needs to be reworked in a more modern language than flash. With that not happening, I just need to remove it from the site.

I don't understand why the Shield Gallery isn't able to be updated - it appears to be simple HTML 4.0 - I could do that.

As for the Shield Generator...I don't have the skills for that.

Maintaining a large photo gallery (including the sort of tagging and thumbnailing the gallery uses) is a colossal time sink if you have to do it manually in HTML.

Sure, the output is HTML 4, but it's generated by PHP.

Other than the search gallery feature, it seems kind of unnecessary. Maybe there's a deeper coding reason I don't understand.

Maintaining a large photo gallery (including the sort of tagging and thumbnailing the gallery uses) is a colossal time sink if you have to do it manually in HTML.

But when it hasn't been maintained in two years....

We have a volunteer :)

Anybody know what's been going on with the Shield Gallery page for the last week or so?  I've been getting the following error message:

Quote from: AARoads Shield GalleryFatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in /homepages/13/d117650366/htdocs/aaroads.com/shields/randomthumb.php:7 Stack trace: #0 /homepages/13/d117650366/htdocs/aaroads.com/shields/template_top.html(37): include() #1 /homepages/13/d117650366/htdocs/aaroads.com/shields/index.php(16): include('/homepages/13/d...') #2 {main} thrown in /homepages/13/d117650366/htdocs/aaroads.com/shields/randomthumb.php on line 7

Other than the heading and the above error message, the page is blank.  Refreshing the page doesn't help.

We had to update the server to php 7.1 and the depreciated code for the Shield Gallery broke as a result.

My friend Matt update the code for the WP based pages. But I have not had the time to work out the kinks to get it ready to re-release while I have been months deep in converting interstate-guide.com into WordPress. Hope to get to the Shield Gallery soon...

Matt fixed the old script.
I am going to shift attention to working on the new one now.

I know this topic has gone dead, but I have been wanting to know if I would be able to upload a couple of my pictures to the gallery?

I just sent Matt an update of things in the Shield Gallery script that need fixing, plus a few tweaks. It will still be awhile before its ready for updates again.

Will post here when that finally happens.

Looks like I effed up the Shield Gallery by uploading an old php file without having downloaded the ones Matt worked on.

I messaged him to see if he has copies of the files. In the meantime the show.php file doesn't work, so the gallery won't output the page with the photo showing the shield.

Without getting long sought after Wordpress based Shield Gallery script completed and running, I am about at the point to where I am ready to just delete the whole damn thing.

Thankfully Matt had copies of the files from when he last fixed it and the Shield Gallery is working again.

Still going to consider whether or not updating the format/script is worth investing. While the current version works, I cannot add new entries or update existing ones without digging into the database.

It'd probably be easier, and better, in the long run to add a photo gallery plugin to WordPress and import all the photos from the shield gallery into the WP Media Library, and then build out new shield gallery pages right in WP.

There are TONS of different photo gallery plugins with different capabilities (all of them free), but the overall general process would be to create a gallery of all the shield photos from one state, create a shortcode of that gallery, and drop it into a page for that state, publish, and repeat for all states/provinces/individual gallery pages.

It'd be time consuming upfront to set up, but fairly easy to maintain after that, and without any major coding headaches.

Also, the shield generator should probably be retired since Flash is officially dead.

Spent the better part of a week reformatting the Shield Gallery from the 2010 html table-based design into a responsive one using CSS flexbox. Just finished checking the pages and testing out the php functionality by adding a few new photos.

I am happy to post that the pages are now mobile friendly.

Did this work ahead of a planned overhaul of the php script that generates the Shield Gallery. While the functionality will generally remain the same, we plan on simplifying some of database structure, dealing with depreciated code, and developing an easier way to edit or update entries. As it stands right now, you have to login to the server and use phpmyadmin to change anything, which is not optimal by any stretch.

I have a few other changes cosmetically for parts of the main site under development now as well. We'll see how far I can get before my GIS classes resume next month...
