East of where the freeway ends, the median is rather wide.  Is it wide enough to build 4 lanes of freeway?  It's really hard to tell by looking at the aerial.

Yes, it can be expanded down to Mabank pretty easily.

I've been in past email contact with the woman that runs the TxDOT office in Kaufman, and she told me they were trying to get various improvements through (the south side service road east of Crandall, making a full grade-separate exit at FM 2860, making the rest of the Kemp bypass grade-separate with main lanes where there aren't now, as well as grade-separating the west-side Bus US 175 exit at Mabank) as "safety improvements" (maybe in order to get $$ quicker or easier for them?) but so far, no $$ has been forthcoming.

At Kemp, the median is extremely wide, maybe 200 to 300 yards across. It appears to be designed for the construction of main lanes in the middle and a full interchange in the future, with the present lanes being used as frontage roads.
