I-45 into Galveston

Made our first trip to Galveston Saturday.  Traffic was terrible all the way from Houston.  We bailed and took Texas 3 for a while and that was even worse.  Coming back on Sunday was fine going north, but heading south again was a disaster.  Is this freeway always that bad?

In short, YES!

Longer version, YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

I10 from the East loop to Katy freeway, needs to be as wide as the Katy freeway. I45 from Rayford/Sawdust to the Causeway needs to be as wide as the Katy freeway. The problem is building it wider where there isn't a lot of land to do so. I heard laughable ideas like double decker highway and express tunnels. But with all the building TexDOT is doing, what money?

Problem you also had was going on a beautiful weather holiday weekend when everyone had similar ideas. I sure SH105 to Lake Conroe was mess, US59 to Lake Livingston was backing up, and SH288 to lake Jackson was just as bad.

We came in on 290 from Austin and had no problems there.  45 sucked.  Figured it was already Saturday of Easter Weekend.  3 isn't built to defray traffic either.  Didn't know if 6 was any good.  Next time we'll go through Freeport.

45 is bad because it isn't wide enough.  Usually its worse north of downtown but beachbound traffic does back up 45 south.  3 is a good alternate, or even 146 if you're farther east.

290 heading in from Austin is uasually one of the worst routes in the city.  Where are you coming from exactly?  I live in Houston and have memorized like eight ways to get from anywhere to anywhere
I love freeways and roads in any state but Texas will always be first in my heart

290 to 10 east was no problem at all.  45 south out of Houston (incl downtown) was a disaster.  and it was backed up all the way to Galveston.

M-F: 290 into 610 is a utter mess in the mornings. 45 becomes the "peaceful" portion. The even commute is even worse on 290. You and 250,000 other people going on the same road.

Weekends: 290 is the best road in the world. Just don't plan on getting on the feeder between Fry Road and Huffmeister.  I45 doesn't change, but you noticed how slow and back upped it can get. Saturday nights can be a crawl on the highway with it not having much in the way of room to expand. Worst times at night are after Rodeo ends. Then it gets even worst then thought possible.
