I couldn't find an existing thread for this topic, so here's a new one. Here's where to post pictures of signs that have been altered, repurposed, recycled, and/or reused – and preferably are now displayed in a new location, too. (Guide signs that have been partially changed, but not moved to a new location, are rather too common and aren't really what I had in mind for the thread anyway.)
So here's my first offering:
Wow, a 15 MPH speed limit where it was once 55 MPH – bummer! No, considering this is at the entrance of an alley in downtown Columbus, the sign was surely posted elsewhere when it read 55 MPH. I didn't think to look on the back for stickers, but I was a bit worn out from walking at the time.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out which is supposed to be the "current" sign image, or even which way is up in the photo...
The KY-7 is current. I believe the image has been altered to show the US shield as up but the 7 is/was upright in real life.
Still standing as of April.
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F182852_1875296723391_4943314_n.jpg&hash=912c81c14d1573e90a964c471c7aa089eb74b025)
Two entries from the AARoads main pages come to mind (both long gone however from the field):
This was an outline US 13 shield recycled into a conventional US 13 shield - Wilmington
(https://www.aaroads.com/northeast/new_jersey200/i-295_sb_exit_000_01.jpg)
The second of two cutouts that were originally posted for US 40's overlap along Interstate 295 southbound in New Jersey. The legend portion of the shield read "DELAWARE" but was superceded by "NEW JERSEY" for the installation's final location. - Penns Grove
This is a little different than what's been presented here so far, but here's an altered sign on OR 8 at Murray Blvd in Beaverton, OR that I find a little amusing:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Beaverton,+OR&hl=en&ll=45.489582,-122.82611&spn=0.001008,0.002642&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.273371,86.572266&oq=beaverton&hnear=Beaverton,+Washington,+Oregon&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=45.489599,-122.826279&panoid=V8POjF_a-iFU5R6CjD3S5g&cbp=12,170.59,,0,-4.93 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Beaverton,+OR&hl=en&ll=45.489582,-122.82611&spn=0.001008,0.002642&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.273371,86.572266&oq=beaverton&hnear=Beaverton,+Washington,+Oregon&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=45.489599,-122.826279&panoid=V8POjF_a-iFU5R6CjD3S5g&cbp=12,170.59,,0,-4.93)
The upper section once read "DMV," but that must have moved, so they greened it out and now the sign very usefully tells you that straight ahead is . . . nothing. There is a junction with OR 10 in a few blocks ahead, which would've been logical information to replace the DMV with, but I guess no one thought of that.

^^ Looks like the School Zone speed limit might have also changed at some point to 20 mph...A doubly-modified sign, and a colored shield to boot? :spin:

Gosh, that I-93 is looking a bit hideous... (oversized '70 spec?) also the arrow for I-93 is pretty shoddy too. That I-89 arrow is a bit vertically thick, too.

Old US 71 became AR 471, but no one liked it so it was co-signed Bus 71. Approximately 2 years after that, 471 was retired.
Why did people have a problem with 471?

Why did people have a problem with 471?
After the 71 Freeway was built north of Fayetteville (ca. 1980), AHTD decided to rename old 71 north of Fayetteville as AR 471. There was a lot of wailing and crying from local business who feared being forgotten because no one would know 471 was old US 71. So AHTD eventually changed it to Bus 71 (aka 71B).

Because "Fayetteville Business Dist." isn't clear. This is why Breezewood should be converted into an endless roundabout. I-76, I-70, and US 30 all interchange with free-flowing ramps. Then you have a sign saying "Breezewood businesses." It leads into a two-lane road with no exit.

It's gone now, but was located on northbound US 421 at KY 4 in Lexington. The back story behind this came to me from a where-is-he-now roadgeek named Joe Reda, who was a native of western Kentucky. When I first put a Web site online, he emailed me to tell me that when it was first opened, the Bluegrass Parkway was known as the Kentucky Bluegrass Parkway, and was marked that way on maps and signed with "KB Parkway" signs instead of "BG Parkway" markers.

There were two recycled signs at this intersection back in 2001. This set reuses an old curve sign.

Found this at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park a couple of months ago. If you look closely, you can see patching where the "2" is. A part of KY 302 used to be KY 304. (This was also KY 3 for awhile). A couple of other KY 302 signs in this area also appear to have gotten this treatment.

Not a road sign, but the original bus stop sign for this bus stop was stolen about couple weeks ago. Then last week, this sign was posted in its place. Normally the bus stop name, number and the buses running on it are posted, but that has been whited out here.
This sign is temporary, but at one time it was used as a regular sign somewhere else. You can still see the word "Hastings" for the name and "50477" for the number and "16" on the sign. An old sign reused to represent a temporary sign.

I suspect this was once a KY 80 sign, since it was in Jackson County and the only 8x route in District 11 is KY 80, and the "9" was overlaid over the "0"

^ That sign appears to be made so that different panels can be placed over individual speed limit numbers, so that different speed limits can be displayed depending on where the speed truck is placed. Easier than putting on a new sign every time you move the speed truck.

Interesting that they're using an American speed limit sign in Canada. Perhaps if a Rip Van Winkle woke up at a spot near there and started driving, that thread about people who go a posted km/h speed limit in miles/hour wouldn't be too far fetched had it not been for the adjacent sign stating that the limit is indeed km/h.

There is the "Your speed" digital display that could remind people. If one were trying to go 30 mph, the display would read something like "48".
I've only seen these types of speed limit signs a few times in Canada. The one below has a separate "km/h" sign below it to remind people.

It's always interesting to note how state / provincial agencies are able to trade shields to each other. Really wish this one lasted longer; it's one of the only American shields in the entire province. In 2009, it looked good. Not sure what caused it to deteriorate so badly in 5 years.
So many things wrong with this one:
1. It's so worn out I can barely tell the sign.
2. It is on a side street that never really seen insane amounts of traffic (though there are a few streets to the west of Cameron that cannot access this road, but the traffic is again insignificant.)
3. The wonky right-turn arrow. This should not be on an angle, this street has always been at this angle.
4. This sign has been out of date for 31 years! New Brunswick reclassified it's highways in 1984, and old Route 6 is now 106. The border is the wrong colour now too, it should now be blue (Collector) and not green (Arterial)

Kentucky has reused guide signs in the past by putting up new sheeting over the old sheeting. Examples are on I-64 between Lexington and Frankfort, and all the remaining old signs on the Mountain Parkway. The demountable copy was removed and new Virginia- or New York- or North Carolina-like panels were placed on top of the existing extruded-panel signs.

Here in Arizona I have also seen a few incremental panels overlaid on extruded panel signs. They are especially common at exit gore signs.
Considering that logo signs will be installed in the Tucson area starting next month, this brings up an interesting point. Currently, the I-10 and Tangerine exit in Marana does not have logo signs, but has a large text sign with the word "CAMPING" in the center. It appears that sign can easily be repurposed into a logo sign by covering the text in the center with blueout and riveting on a logo and a "CAMPING" plaque on the top of the sign (assuming the campground at that exit signs up).
Here is one of the signs I am talking about:

This US 60 sign is in Winchester, Ky. It definitely dates back to the early 1970s, before the inception of reflective sheeting. A decade ago, it wasn't faded like this, but now that it is, it shows what it was in a previous life.

Probably the construction firm's sign, so they just keep reusing it everytime they have a new project to work on.

I believe that's a R4-5 being misused just for its first line of legend. However, I can't seem to find a sign code for the "trucks no right turn" unisign I've seen elsewhere, or even a simple "trucks" plaque to place above a normal "no right turn sign". Those being less common, this substitution by a contractor for a temporary situation is understandable.
This is the back of a gated-off storage area in an industrial yard in El Paso. It was created using some old BGS's and a few shipping containers. Notice, the BGS's include button copy, FHWA, and Clearview.

Hasn't Virginia done that quite a bit, especially along I-81?

What did IN 933 replace? Let me guess, US 33?
^^ Right, US 33 became SR 933 in St. Joseph County only. The portion of US 33 in Elkhart County, from the county line to the US 20 bypass was turned over to the localities.
This information tells you that the picture wasn't taken in Elkhart. It was taken in South Bend, on Michigan Street (BR 31), looking north toward Sample Street.
Lazy work on the signs when the change was made years ago, and it's never been fixed. Lots of the SR 933 signs are the wrong size, like this one: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6675485,-86.2391561,3a,66.8y,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sq1OHsO8CUydC9y11AKyN2g!2e0 (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6675485,-86.2391561,3a,66.8y,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sq1OHsO8CUydC9y11AKyN2g!2e0)

In addition to the ones on that highway, the final overhead assembly for the US-50/301 split has gotten this treatment as well. I think I recall it being that way last summer too.
I kind of wondered how preemptive the move might have been, or if these actually collapsed on their own first.

This sign may look like it was vandalized, but I'm pretty sure the hand-written part was actually done as a correction -- WSDOT typically uses the P suffix for pedestrian bridges, and this is one. However, very strangely, WSDOT's bridge list (http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/PUBLICATIONS/MANUALS/FULLTEXT/M23-09/SR99.pdf) doesn't show a bridge 99-582 at all, with or without the P suffix.

But if he goes missing, we can use it to ID him :p

You don't have to call me Jesus Christ. I'm nowhere near that good of a soul.
You also don't have to apologize either. I have a good sense of humor and am not above self-deprecation at times.

Gotta love the Lovecraftian 3-headed arrow.
Posting here after being recommended to do that in another thread, a repurposed US shield:

Weird.
Bumping to post this great shield I found on SR 161 near Cove Fort, UT:
It's cool at first glance simply because it's a very old variant of the beehive that you rarely see anymore. But it gets even cooler if you look closer at the numbers, you'll see it used to be for SR 33 ... which has not existed for 40 years. That was the original designation for the state highway between Castle Gate and Duchesne, which became part of US 191 back in 1981.

MT 24W, which was the old number, according to Alps: https://www.alpsroads.net/roads/mt/us_2/

MT 24W was the old number, and apparently MDT got lazy on this sign when changing the spur route to MT 42 in 1994. At the same time, MT 13W in Wolf Point became MT 25, and any remnants of the old MT 13W disappeared completely.
I pass this clearance sign on Cincinnati-Dayton Road in Liberty Township, OH on the way back from work every morning. Not until today did I notice that it's actually a reused construction sign!

"Beckett [Road] north of Union Center [Boulevard] closed from May 12, 2000 for 4 days"
Bonus points for a mis-spelling: it's Union Centre Boulevard, not Union Center.
Right in front of Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati is this oddity...

"If snow exceeds two (2) inches, all cars must be off street or towed away"
Apparently this sign is ancient enough that it predates snow emergency signs. Really odd phrasing as well.

This one looks like a rotated T-intersection sign. This is Liberty Road in between Randallstown and Eldersburg, Maryland, west of Baltimore.
I've seen that commonly enough near where I live, I thought it was a different version of the T-intersection sign! :banghead:

I assume this sign used to be "Through Trucks Prohibited"?
https://maps.app.goo.gl/9bpzka2CiBF2qvwi8
The irony here is that this street doesn't actually lead anywhere except for looping back out onto the same road a few hundred feet away. so unlike in other applications of this sign, this isn't a place where someone could cut through a sleepy residental street in between two major roads.
An old stop sign pole with a newer stop sign pole nailed into it:
