Title: "roadwaywiz" YouTube Video Updates and Live Content Information
Post by: roadwaywiz95 on August 15, 2019, 06:33:53 PM
Hey everyone,

I am pleased to announce the launch of a brand-new feature to the road enthusiast hobby. I've been experimenting over the past couple years (on my YouTube channel) with a variety of types of *live* road video content, including simulcasts of my drives and Road Meet tours. The next experimental step is the "Online Road Meet", a Meet-style event where I'm joined by one or two guest hosts as we take viewers on a driving tour of a planned itinerary and act as tour guides along the way. The idea is that road enthusiasts and other interested parties can tune in remotely from wherever they may be and follow along with the tour and interact with the hosts via the live chat. While I do not expect this to become a frequent item on the annual Road Meet calendar, it does provide folks the opportunity to take part in a formal event and to see parts of our country that they may otherwise not be able to see with a structured/in-person formula. I strongly believe that we are all better off if more of us are able to "see" more of the scenes we know and adore, and this new  feature may be seen as a means of connecting more people and introducing more of us to the Road Meet concept.

The first "Online Meet" has tentatively been scheduled and I will be providing more information about that event shortly. I will also be posting announcements, links, and other useful information regarding these Meets in this topic. Keep it here if you'd like to stay informed regarding future live content, including Live Drives, Online Meets, and Road Meet simulcasts.

The first-ever "Online Road Meet" is now upon us and will take place on Saturday, August 24 starting at 1 PM ET. The Meet Tour will include notable points of interest and landmarks in the area of Chester, PA and Bridgeport, NJ, with highlights including (but not limited to):
US 322/Conchester Hwy construction update
Commodore Barry Bridge
New Raccoon Creek Bridge (US 130)
NJ Route 324

The Meet will be streamed *live* at this location: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBZAg45nx8I

I will be your host alongside forum moderator Ian as we bring you along for this comprehensive itinerary, a copy of which will be uploaded/provided for all interested in following along in a forthcoming update. Hope to see some of you in "attendance"!

I need to find three hours to sit down and watch the PGH meet.

This is a great concept, but only works in areas with good cell reception. I'd like to do a virtual tour of the progress made on US 460 since I hosted a meet in Pikeville, Ky., several years ago, but the cell service is awful.

What equipment are you using? What type of phone and mount?

It would be cool if I could expand this concept to the 2020 Cincinnati meet. I'm not sure I can get the right equipment.

... or just record it and upload it to youtube when you get back.  it's not like something like a road tour really needs to be experienced live.

I have been using my Samsung Note 8 fitted with the Streamlabs app, which allows me to stream directly to YouTube without the glitchiness of the YT app. It also allows me to fool around with framerates, resolution, and other display features in a more comprehensive manner than the straight-up YT app. I use a very primitive dashboard mounting system that looks horrible but has done wonders for me for almost a decade now.

This is true; cell reception is probably the Number 1 wild card when it comes to streaming and its impossible to tell ahead of time where exactly you'll hit a dead zone. The reception for the Pittsburgh meet was generally good (to my surprise), until the part with dirt roads in the middle of nowhere. With that in mind, the itinerary for this Online event is being considered with optimal reception in mind; there's just one area I'm a little concerned with, but the reward would be worth the risk.

Today, I tried using Streamlabs as a test. I tried doing 2 short live videos at my desk. In the first one, the video was limited to just a tiny H-shaped window. The second clip didn't show up at all.

If you and Ian are going to cover Conchester, you two should also check out the antiquated cloverleaf between US 1 & PA 352, west of Media, as well as an abandoned section of (Old) Baltimore Pike, found at the SE corner of US 1 & PA 352.

Found a photo of the cloverleaf between US 1 & PA 352 from when it just opened...in 1939.

(to get your bearings straight, Media would be at the top of the photo (with US 1 heading to the upper left corner, and *Old* Baltimore Pike heading to the upper right corner), while PA 352 would be going left (north) to right (south) across this photo)

(in this one, US 1 is heading lower left (out of Media) to upper right (out to Maryland), while PA 352 is going left (south) to right (north) again.

So the first of these Online Meets has successfully taken place and I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the live stream, either in  person or in the live chat during the course of our tour. Over the next few days, I'd like to hear from you folks regarding your thoughts on how the stream concept was executed in this example. (What are some things you liked? What could be improved?) The hope is that *eventually* this can become a feature that makes an appearance upwards of quarterly through the course of a year and provides a sufficient alternative to in-person events for folks interested in learning more about our country's roads who are unable to make the trip to see them in person.

Your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated as I work to improve this feature.

Are you doing this one live and on location, or from a fixed location (home or elsewhere) with previously shot footage? Interesting in how this concept is going to play out.

We are doing this from a fixed location featuring footage already produced. It's like a power point presentation with video files mixed in. We've done a few of these this year and as long as there hasn't been a power outage, it's gone very well.

I have gone back and revised the itinerary for this Saturday's Wildwood, NJ Online Road Meet event taking a couple suggestions into account. The roster for this event has also been updated as we have confirmed the hosts of this weekend's tour. A link to the revised (and final) itinerary can be found below:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ty0a8l8ccwyxfjv/Wildwood%20Road%20Meet%20Itinerary%2011-16-19%20FINAL.docx?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ty0a8l8ccwyxfjv/Wildwood%20Road%20Meet%20Itinerary%2011-16-19%20FINAL.docx?dl=0)

The YouTube link for this live stream can be found above in the thread - this URL has not changed. The forecast for Saturday at this point calls for Fair skies but with high winds; our aim is to keep the audio disruptions to as close to zero as possible. (The cold weather of the day may also truncate the length of our stops should conditions be worse than expected.) That said, we have a great roster and an intriguing tour route to bring you folks and I hope you all enjoy!

Looking forward to bringing the AARoads community more of this feature in 2020!

The recent nation-wide shutdown due to COVID-19 has left a huge entertainment programming void to be filled by us content creators in the coming weeks. In response to this shortage of original/unscripted programming due to the closure of theaters, sporting events, etc., I'll be streaming live every weekday from somewhere in my day-to-day travels and will be starting a new Webinar series to be broadcast once a week, probably on Saturdays. Go to my channel home page (linked below) and scroll to the "Upcoming Live Streams" section to find an upcoming program you'd like to see. Also be sure to check out the "Created Playlists" section and browse all of my past Webinars, Online Road Meets, and Virtual Tours (either those you haven't yet seen, or those you'd like to see again!). With a little creativity and some perseverance, us content creators and viewers will make it through these next weeks/months.

As the month of March comes to a close, tonight's live stream (part of the ongoing series of *daily* live content you can expect from my channel in the days/weeks to come) will take a look back at the past 3 weeks as the COVID-19 Outbreak enveloped the New York metropolitan area and resulted in the creation of a daily afternoon Live Drive series named "The Coronavirus & The Commute". In this episode, I'll be taking you folks down "memory lane" to revisit some of my favorite moments from this series thusfar and giving you a chance to see some other related footage that never made it onto a live stream. I'll also talk in detail about the origins and inspirations for this series, where it's taken me and my viewers thus far, and where you can expect it to go from here.

Coverage begins tonight at 6 PM ET - we look forward to seeing you there!

We hope you can join us for what's sure to be an interesting Saturday edition of the "Sunday Conversation" series.

I hosted a meet in 2005 that featured this highway in Kentucky. Portions of it were still under construction at the time. I later got to drive on an as-yet unopened portion of the road when I attended a dedication ceremony for one of the bridges along the highway.

For that meet, I made a handout showing the dates each section opened, and the expected completion dates for the segments under construction. Wish I still had it. Completion of the route cut the travel time between Pikeville and Belfry/South Williamson from an hour to 30 minutes.

West Virginia got its final sections (the bypass of Logan, and the segment from the US 52 intersection to the state line) finished before Kentucky got its portion done. Once the entire route was complete, it changed some commerce patterns for Pikeville. Instead of going to Lexington (and to a lesser extent, Kingsport), people started going to Charleston for shopping and entertainment.

I had a meet scheduled for the New River Gorge and Beckley area (the bridge, the East Beckley bypass and the Coalfields Expressway) a few years ago but had to cancel it because of health issues. I think several people who had already planned to attend made the trip and used the meet tour notes I'd developed to do their own leaderless meet.

This video helped me helped me out of a jam today, specifically of the traffic variety. At the northern end where the DE 1 ramp to I-95 north splits to drop you down to either the left side (for 95N & 495N) or the right side (for 295N) of the highway, the ramp towards the left was backing up much more than the right. I took the right one despite intending to go for 495, but I came out slightly ahead. Like in the video, there were drivers almost stopped in the right lane with the left blinker on. Thank you again for this and all of the webinars, virtual meets, and the regular ol' drives that you share with us :).

After careful consideration and a few looks at the weather forecast for tomorrow in the Capital District, my team and I has decided to move up the start time of tomorrow's *live* episode to 11:00 AM ET, instead of the original 12:00 PM ET start. We're doing so in order to maximize the amount of time in dry weather so we can bring you the best quality episode possible. I apologize for the late notice and potential inconvenience, but I hope to see you in the live chat with us tomorrow morning anyway!

The latest installment in the Virtual Tour series brought us to central Alabama and an episode devoted to the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail. Ever since I spent a good deal of time in central Alabama back in January, my interest in the topic of the Voting Rights Marches of 1965 has been something I've been thinking about turning into a presentation on for this channel. In this episode, we examined the modern-day Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail and also discuss the larger historical events surrounding the Marches themselves and the Byway's ultimate creation.

This event was broadcast *live* on the evening of Saturday, 3/19/22, but is available at the link below for viewing:

One of the things I've set up recently in order to be a little more diverse in both my live streaming capability AND live stream subject matter is a new account over on Twitch! It's going to take a couple weeks to get everything set up to the point where I can start producing content over there on a regular basis, but if you're interested this will be another way that you can keep up with me and see what I'm up to on a more regular basis.

I'll have more information in the coming weeks about what exactly I'll be up to over on that platform, but it's safe to say that it will feature mostly non-road-related content so you probably won't see me plugging that channel very often on this page. It's mostly intended to serve as another outlet where I can unplug from the roads scene and do other things while also keeping the same identity and networks going. Hope to see you over there!

Yesterday I gave a shoutout to my new Twitch channel (the link to that page is contained within that post); today I want to plug my new Discord server! I've set this up so that followers of my work can hang out and chat with me and some of my inner circle content creators who you've all gotten to know during my live shows over the last 3+ years. If you're not familiar with Discord, it's basically a huge platform where chatrooms can be created under a common topic/theme umbrella, kind of in a similar way to how forums function, but still relying on a presentation that resembles the old AOL Instant Messenger, for instance.

My Discord server still kind of in its early stages of development,  but there's enough in place at this time that I feel comfortable sharing it with all of you. Hope to see you over there!
