we never bothered to make the rule explicit, figuring it was a matter of common sense.  Publishing the location of an old sign implies its near-immediate destruction from a member of a highway crew that we did not know was reading the forum.  Many, many examples abound of this - going back to before this forum came into being, and others posted locations of old signs in various other locations.

Ask DB and his California bear 19 and corresponding guide sign; ask about the I-480 sign in Nebraska, ask about the state named (yet totally incorrect) I-40 signs in Nevada... ask about a lot of specific details, and receive the answers that a lot of signs are gone and no one may see them ever again.

so, if it weren't codified before, then let it be codified now.  Do not post the locations of old signs, because people will pluck them.

Ok, I'm going to bite.  Are there pictures of these such signs?

Uhm, then why take or share a photo?  If a person is really looking to replace and or steal a sign, that theoretical person can figure out where the sign is just by the context of the picture.  Hmmm it's on CA 19 about 28 miles from Long Beach etc.  Or mine...hmm where 77 and 81 are together, on a four lane road, near traffic signals etc.  IF they want to take it, it doesn't matter what you do they're going to take it.

The lesson isn't don't post a photo location, the lesson is when you have a chance to photo a sign take the photo.  Steve Alpert may be the best example...when he sees an older sign he photos it.  My sign in question I saw for the first time three weeks ago but didn't have a camera at the ready, if it was replaced by the time I got back to it so be it.  Or if someone had taken a photo prior and it was replaced in the time since then, so be it.

On the way back from PA today, came across these aging I-77/81 VA shields in Wytheville:

link blocked... please do not geotag the photos to make it easy for everyone to steal the signs

WHY? If you look through the archive, Scott5114 posted a sign location but you didn't edit his post. I'm sure numerous people have posted locations (I may have too) so are you going to edit all of them? Or is this something arbitrary?

I understand some of Jake's concern.  He's very much into these old signs, to where he fears posting their location will cause their demise.  That said, I think some of it is also paranoia, and I see no reason to edit posts to "take out coordinates".

I have done it before fairly consistently.  It just hasn't been an issue in a few months.

I don't remember the one Scott posted.  I don't think I saw the post in the first place.

Hopefully not as controversial (it's not really road related)

But Day 2 of my trip home to PA over the 4th, Kennywood Park - It's in my top 10 of favorite places to go...if not #1.

It was another day at the New Hope Valley Railway. This time, I went along with the Wake Forest Camera Club. We were able to ride on Engine #17 and they were kind enough to drop us off to take photos of #17 at full steam.

About a month ago, I traveled to Portland for work.  Though I didn't have direct access to a car, I was able to walk around a bit and get photos.

that may very well be the oldest interstate shield in Portland.  It is '61 spec, even though it doesn't have the state name.

On a local tour of Triangle Expressway construction today, Bob Malme and I came across this rather interesting NC 540 shield.

Not sure how to categorize this one.

Could you let Bob know I sent him an e-mail?  I send him an e-mail back on 10/2.

It was about one of the pictures on his I-73/74 site being hijacked on another site without credit being given (and this site has given credit on any other pictures it's posted in articles which are non-highway related).

Or is his duke e-mail now dead?

My friend Chris Allen, and his wife Amber, took an 18 day roadtrip from Durham, NC to Alaska and back.  Of course he blogged it, check it out at:

Earlier this month, prior to going to the Canes/Preds game in Nashville, Billy Riddle and I took a jaunt in Western TN and KY.  We did a photo walk of his hometown - Kingston Springs, caught up with an abandoned truss bridge, and got some Interstate 69 construction photos in Union City, TN as well.
