As with last year, I'll be in Saratoga Springs, NY for a weekend in early March for a meteorology conference. This year, it'll be the weekend of March 11-12. So I was wondering if there was any interest amongst Capitol Region (or greater NY) folks in having a dinner that Friday night (the 10th).
I'll be staying at the same place as last year, so I would prefer somewhere in downtown Saratoga.
Depends on the time (later the better), so I'm a maybe.
Definite maybe. Would be nice to meet some new roadgeeks and see others again. I won't be leaving town for spring break until the next day.
I'm no longer working from home so I won't have the schedule flexibility to make it up there so easily like I did last year. But I can't rule anything out.
Man, if only it was the Saturday. I'll calendar it anyway.
The Saturday is the main day of our conference, so no bueno there...
Checking the calendar, I have a curling match over on Balltown Road in Niskayuna at 8:35 that night (for the local crowd, it's that nondescript building across from the fire station). My attendance will likely hinge on whether or not I can find someone to fill in for me for that game (may be easier on a Friday).

I'll do it. Oh, wait.
Good chance, especially if I'm still in the Albany area.
If I owned a car, I might be crazy enough to attempt to day-trip this, but I don't yet and it's too much of a shlep to do via mass transit from NYC in one day...

Agreed.
I pulled it off last year getting out of work at 5 pm. I don't think I have anything on the calendar at present so I may be open to coming out again.
I'll upgrade to "likely." I'm putting in enough OT for the time being that I can probably grab half a day off without anyone complaining.
EDIT: Our company ski outing happens to be that day, at Hunter. So I'm now definite (unless I break bones and organs).
Any ideas on where to have dinner? Same place as last year?

Have it at the casino buffet. Let us all get fat :-D
In all honesty, anywhere is fine for me as long as it's 6 PM or later. No way I can guarantee I'll be up there before then if I get out of RPI at 4:30 with how traffic can be in the evening.

It was Seven Horse Pub, which I thought was a solid restaurant.
are there still open slots for new applications?

Absolutely.
Okay...I put in and got approved for a half day at work, so I'll be getting out at noon on the 10th. I did schedule an oil change appointment in the afternoon, but I should still have plenty of time to make the drive out and (hopefully) not have to spend 30 minutes looking for a parking spot.
Not sure what everyone is thinking in terms of a time, but assuming I spend an hour at the dealer, maybe make a quick stop at home, and not dawdle on the way out, I should be in the Saratoga area between 5-6.

6 is probably the earliest the locals can guarantee we can get there without missing work/class given how traffic tends to be at the bridges. At that time on a Friday, I need to allow at least an hour to get up there.
Yeah, I'm hesitant to say I could make it up there before 6:45.
I might need to pull out of this thing depending on how schedules line up. While I'd like to see everyone, part of me just wants to get home (or at least partway home, since I plan to do a boatload of clinching both ways) and maximize the amount of time I get to see the family over spring break.

No, you need to be there. I think we're all arriving between 6 and 7.

I definitely won't be there if my 2:00 that afternoon cancels. If I had to choose between anything and spending a night at Duff's, I'd choose Duff's (sorry, guys).

Unless Duff's has to do with the Simpsons or Hilary, I fail to agree.
As with before, I'm looking at a 7pm dinner. I have classes that morning and will have to make my way down, check in, and possibly help with some of the setup.
I'm fine with the place we were at last year, though I'm open to other suggestions as long as they're in the downtown area (i.e. within walking distance of the hotel).

My wife always insists we stop at the one in Amherst on our trips out west.
That being said, I'm officially out. An extra few hours with the siblings wins out. They'd be crushed if I could only spend time with them for one weekend day. If it didn't line up with break, I'd definitely be there.

Any decisions on where we'll be going? I plan to attend if this is still on.
Oh, it's still on. Just looking for suggestions for a place...or we can just go back to where we went last year. Still looking at 7pm.
At this point, we are probably looking at the same place.
Hoping to make it.

I may take advantage depending on when I can get to Albany, given parking will probably be at a premium up in Saratoga.
As I recall, parking wasn't an issue last year.

As I recall, parking wasn't an issue last year.
I didn't get there until around 7 and it ended up taking me about 15-20 minutes to find a parking spot.
I found one in the small garage across the way last time.
I recall it being a talking point and the small garage was mentioned as not being an issue.
It looks like parking at the library might be public too if the garage is full (I think I ended up circling a couple times and then taking a spot someone just left last year). I may end up approaching the garage from Phila Street instead of Putnam Street and check the upper level first, since it's easier to get to the lower level if needed than vice versa.
I recall parking on the street last year a couple of blocks east of the restaurant and that worked fine.
As much as I would like to come out tomorrow night, I will not be doing so. My brother-in-law will be passing through the Utica area around dinner time and I do also have some concerns about the weather on the return trip (heavy snow squalls were mentioned as a possibilty).
Hope everyone has a great time.
Unfortunately, I've had my own family obligations come up unexpectedly today. I will not be able to make it.
That's a pity. Best of luck to you two.
(BTW, I'd be more worried about the cold than about the snow squalls...)
Wound up with a group of five of us. Thank you for the evening, Doug, Alps, vdeane, and kalvado!
