Title: Snow...
Post by: BigMattFromTexas on December 04, 2009, 11:07:47 PM
This is like the first time I remember it snowing before winter in San Angelo, Tx. It wasn't even just a little flakes here and there it was like a Texas blizzard!
It snowed about two inches, but where was I? Oh I was at school until 3:45 and by that time just about ALL the snow was gone... So now I have to wait until the next time it snows... And who knows when that will be...
Heres the pictures I took at 6:30 AM

It was an historic early snowfall. It even reached Houston and Louisiana.

Meanwhile, Montana has wind chills in the -40's.

I've seen the snow fall as early as October and as late as May.  Snow in early December would be of no surprise here in Upstate New York.

Since when is latitude an absolute guide to temperature? The climates at Cairo and Houston are different.

That said, snow in Houston is rather rare.

No snow here at 51.5 North and we've only had one frost, let alone any snow. That North Atlantic Drift keeps our winters warm (though wet) and sadly we get little snow and are unable to deal with it if we get it as it's also rare.

Iowa:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN DES MOINES HAS ISSUED A BLIZZARD WARNING...

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 10 TO 14 INCHES ARE ANTICIPATED FOR MUCH OF CENTRAL IOWA. THE BEST THREAT FOR RECEIVING OVER A FOOT OF SNOW IS GENERALLY SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 20. ISOLATED AMOUNTS UP TO 16 INCHES ARE FORECAST FROM EAST OF DES MOINES TO SOUTH OF WATERLOO.

SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL CONCERNS ARE EXPECTED WITH THIS DANGEROUS WINTER STORM...ESPECIALLY DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS AND TOWARDS RUSH HOUR TONIGHT. IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATING ON ROADWAYS...VERY STRONG NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS WILL CAUSE SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW AND WHITEOUT CONDITIONS LATE TONIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY...LEADING TO THE  POTENTIAL FOR MAJOR TRAVEL IMPACTS AND ROAD CLOSURES. SNOW DRIFTS OF 8 TO 15 FEET ARE POSSIBLE BY WEDNESDAY.

TONIGHT...PARTLY CLOUDY. COLDER. LOWS AROUND 14. WEST WINDS 15 TO 20 MPH.

So speaketh NWS Norman. OK generally gets one winter weather event per year. Looks like this will not be the time this year. Only chance of snow on the forecast is a 20% chance of precip, either rain or snow, on Friday night.

It is winter in Kansas, according to KDOT's 511 site:

http://511.ksdot.org/KanRoadPublic_VE/Default.aspx

Turnpike is slushy all the way from Oklahoma to Topeka, and roads north of Topeka and the I-70 corridor (including parts of I-70 in the Flint Hills) have ice and packed snow.  Conditions are especially bad around Atchison.

An old friend of mine who lives in Topeka is running a betting pool on her Facebook page.  She thinks there will be 6" accumulation, and there are guesses ranging from 1 1/2" up to 12" (the latter admittedly not very serious).

Was out that way yesterday (well, near it, in the Quad Cities) at 4:00pm.  The freezing rain (and sleet) was coming down very hard.  In fact, most everyone was either turned away from the wind (oddly from the east) or had a hood up to protect their face from it.  Wound up leaving there about 4:15pm and got back to Joliet (about 130 miles away) at 6:45pm.  I-80 was very slushy from the Quads through Atkinson (Exit 27) and slippery until Spring Valley.  Then the problem was the wind until Morris, after which it got slushy again (but not as bad as before).

LOL!  In some areas of the US, usually in the norther tier of states around the Great Lakes, 3 inches is considered a snow flurry.  Where I went to college in Houghton, Michigan (Michigan Tech), we usually saw in the neighborhood of 200 inches of snow in a season.  My first winter up there saw over 300 inches of snow for the season.

Where I am near Chicago now, we see about 40 inches per year.

Yep, you're right, in my whole life we've only got lake effect snow once (no clue how though..)
However, by saying only, last year at this time we got 20 inches, somehow we didn't have permanent snow up here until after December 2nd, which was the date of last years huge snowstorm.

The only large snowstorms we get are Alberta Clippers, and Colorado Lows, which are common, but never large and so far this year we've only gotten one snowstorm, it wasn't that big.

The 74 inches you noted, we get most of it in January, February and March when it isn't as cold.

There was also half an inch on Wednesday and Thursday as well as the 4 to 6 inches falling Thursday/Friday night in the Chilterns. They have been a bit hit and miss at when and how much will fall. For instance, we were meant to have more snow tonight, but only a light dusting has occurred so far.

A big problem is that there's quite a bit of water and slush that formed as people walked/drove over the snow today and as the sun melted it - this will refreeze tonight and make the roads very dangerous with black ice.

Oklahoma could possibly get three inches or so on Christmas Eve. White Christmases are pretty rare here, so this might be fun.

The Netherlands range from about 8 inches (my town) up to two feet.

Again, any accumulation over 2 - 3 inches is rare in this country.

took half an hour to do about 1.5 miles just now - snow's coming down quite heavily (we had about 4inches on Saturday and about one so far tonight, making there being about 6 inches of snow on the ground at the moment, where it hasn't been touched - some melted and it's settled and shrunk) and the gritters hadn't been along that (main) road. There was a lot of melt water that'll freeze later tonight, making dangerous conditions worse.

London is pretty gridlocked and this is the most pre-Christmas snow there for a great many years. Eurostar's trains have been screwed for the last few days (none running, 55000 people stuck on one side of the channel or the other) as a bit of snow got into the electrics of one train and melted, causing it to fail.

I'm less than 100 miles from English Si and there's less than 1 inch on the ground which fell on Saturday night. We've had no further snow since then but it's the cold temperatures that's causing it to remain.

Having just driven down the east coast, mainly along I-95, a few days after the big mid Atlantic storm, it's safe to say that the DC area is not built for or equipped for the kind of snow they had.  Side roads were completely untouched by plows and were a deep snow/ice pack with deep ruts and snowbanks were left in some very inconvenient places even on the Beltway.  It looks like the sound walls are sometimes built so close to the side of the road that there's no place to put the snow except on the shoulder or part of the right lane.  There seems to be little effort to clear shoulders even in places that the space exists to push the snow aside.  I'm glad I didn't have to try to get through that area any sooner after the storm passed.

There was still some snow on the sides of the roads as far south as Emporia, Virginia.  I was hoping there'd still be some in North Carolina but not quite.  The snow cover was definitely the most impressive in the immediate DC area.

Beltway actually wasn't that bad...some of the on/off-ramps were (and in 2 cases still are) a pain, but the mainline lanes themselves have been fine since Sunday afternoon, at least in my quadrant of the Beltway.

Concur on the side streets/roads.

Curious where you were where you think the soundwalls are built so close to the side of the road.  I haven't noticed anything like that except some locations within the District itself.

We did the western half on Tuesday night (I-95 North to 267) and Wednesday morning (267 to I-95 South).  The problems on the Beltway were mainly at ramps, where snow was left in the triangle between the mainline and a ramp that seemed to fall or get knocked around at times.

I am thinking of areas near the I-270 junction, but maybe those weren't sound walls.  It just seemed that there was no place to push the snow, so it was right up against the white line in the right lane.

Oklahoma just got clobbered. Western Oklahoma got up to a foot, Oklahoma City got around six inches. There's a rather impressive snowbank against the structure that my apartments' mailboxes are in. I ran out there to drop my Internet bill in the outgoing mail box and sank up to my knees in the stuff. OHP has much of the Oklahoma City interstate system shut down and the Governor has declared a state of emergency. I decided to call in to work...they had two employees dedicated just to processing call-ins.

Yes, they are repairing those holes all day long, there are road closures every day. The problem is the foundation of this road is messed up real bad, so they'd have to replace the entire roadway, not just the top layer. They temporarily fix it now, but a few hours later, the hole is there again. At some places, the shoulder looks like a dirt road, with all the asphalt debris there.

In 3 months, this road will be subject to widening from 6 to 8 lanes, all problems will be gone then.

The problems will last this winter though, they forecast major snowfall tonight and icebox temperatures during the coming week or so.

It can't be as bad as what I saw when driving along this road in Minnesota. The workers were pouring loose asphalt into potholes. All it does is cause clattering and banging when driving over it and I'm sure the rental car company really likes their cars returning full of stone chips.

heh, I am the exact opposite - anything over 55 and I want to claw my skin off!  59 being miserably cold?  I keep my room at 56 on the thermostat, and wear a jacket indoors in the winter ;)

a few weeks ago I was at -33 in the Cascades in Oregon and perfectly comfortable.  Absolutely no wind, and the clearest skies I have ever seen in my life... (beats US-85 in South Dakota, 6100 feet at -11 degrees) ... I took a few pictures, added oil to my car as needed, and kept on driving!

then a couple days later, -17 but with wind ... - wind chill -68 at Macdonald Pass in Montana.  Now THAT was cold!!!!  Had to hold the tripod down to take a 20 second exposure of Helena, Montana off to the east...

Ah yes.  Earlier in the decade, MnDOT District 6 put most of their eggs in the rebuilding-52-thru-Rochester basket, and the rest of the District's roads (including MN 16) are suffering somewhat as a result.  It doesn't help that the Root River valley (where your photos are) gets wet and occasionally flooded, which just compounds the pothole problem.

Mind if I snag those photos for my Minnesota pages?

Yeah, you were better off without it.  The closest I came were "snow squalls" hitting the Barrie area, but besides reduced visibility it wasn't covering up the remaining tire tracks on the 400 and I was still able to move at 80-110 km/h.  I had far too many hours driving in those tracks, though...

Because, when going to TESCOs late on Sunday Afternoon (about an hour and a half before it closed) and there was little bread, I went down just now to get some more. They had very little bread - some rolls and some stuff from the in-store bakery.

At first I thought this was because of a delivery that hadn't come. But then I saw a near-empty fresh meat aisle, no fresh milk on the shelves and finally no bananas. Talking to staff, I found out that it's because of panic buying - odd that it was perishables, but I guess it was "I won't be able to get that stuff for a couple of days, and my old stuff will go off/run out before I can get some more", especially given that milk and bread are fairly staple foods (the meat's a bit more odd and bananas are the most popular fruit). The tinned food aisle was well-stocked, and didn't look like it had recently been refreshed. I guess we're really not used to possible snow-ins.

The Met office, as an extreme weather warning for Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, suggests 6-12 inches, perhaps 16 inches in places over the next 24 hours (the snowfall ends Wednesday night). That said, having watched the London weather report, Slough and that area will get it bad, but we'll miss out on the really heavy stuff - perhaps 8 or 9 inches, so, like last time, about a day of stoppage and a few days of problems. I'll be surprised if you wouldn't be able to walk to a smaller shop (if not TESCOs) to buy bread and milk (not that they'll have them now) on Thursday. Driving would be slow, but not ridiculously dangerous, by Thursday evening, given what happened a couple of weeks ago.

we have 2-3 inches now, though the snow is predicted to keep falling (I reckon we'll end up with about 6-8 inches). Oddly, Luton Airport is reopened, which means that they don't see a huge snow threat today, though no schools in the area are open, because of problems on the roads and getting there.

The blunt instrument of the extreme weather warning strikes again - the M4 corridor has been hit with 8 inches, so a few Bucks villages have had what was predicted for the county. However it fails to take notice that the county, while definitely not the biggest, has a set of hills running through the middle causing about three different climates (north of the hills, on the hills, the small bit of Bucks south of the hills which got lots of snow).

The biggest problem is places have run out of grit, due to having to spread it for either snow or ice or both for the last 10 weeks.

I'm trying to remember if the Met office said anything about the winter we were going to have. After their 'Barbecue summer' prediction for hot and dry weather was almost universally laughed at (we had a wet summer), they probably kept silent. I know that they said that this year would be the hottest year on record - so far it's not looking good with large parts of Europe and North America under a big cold snap. I guess the climate change activists could (though oddly they haven't been that vocal so far) spin it as 'extreme' weather, but that's so vague a category that while this would clearly count, fairly average winters get spun as extreme because they are too warm, too wet or too dry and not right on the average.

The exact same things happens here in Middle Tennessee!   :banghead:  :pan:  We have a couple of inches forecast for Wednesday night/Thursday morning so I expect to see the same here soon.  Though I had no trouble getting milk last night.  (I actually NEEDED it after being away from home for two weeks.)

It's bizarre behavior, and being from the Upper Midwest, I don't understand it.  People in places like Chicago never do this sort of panic buying even when looking at getting a foot or more of snow.  We're supposed to see 10 inches during Thursday and Friday, and yet people are pretty calm about it.  I expect the snowplows will be busy, and we'll see garbage trucks and other maintenance vehicles pressed into service as snowplows as usual.

Always the usual winter hazard on I-94 in NW Indiana and Berrien County, Michigan.  I've used the Indiana Toll Road to I-69 or the Toll Road and the Ohio Turnpike to I-75 to avoid some of the worst of it.

Well having spent the first 30 years of my life in PA, MD and OH; I never ran into it until I moved here.  I still don't understand it.  The kind of storm that might keep everyone in for a week probably happens here once every 100 years.  The only thing that came close is an ice storm in 1994 that turned people's power off for most of a week.

A very slow moving snow shower paralyzed Amsterdam and vicinity, all roads turned into solid ice quickly, and the average speeds on about every road dropped to 2 mph. Delays of over 3 hours were reported on the Amsterdam beltway (A10). Every single road in the area is jammed, reports state over 800 km of traffic jam in just an area of 20 by 20 miles.

This is Amsterdam traffic at 10 pm:

They have issued a "weather alarm" (sounds a bit panicky, weather warning would be a better term) for northern Netherlands for blowing snow. I just did a little trip in my city, there is horizontal snowfall, but the intensity is not very high, so it's still driveable. Annoying are those people who drive the speed of walking on a major road that has just a thin layer of snow.

Bad weather has a habit of doing that to people. 'Enjoyed' a 200-mile trip today from Hamburg to the North Sea coast and back, and while there were a few snow drifts on parts of the roads, the Autobahn was pretty much either snow-free or with just a dusting of snow, yet at times people were driving as slow as 40 (kilometers, not miles) - really, if you're that f'n scared of driving in snow, stay at home or take a train.

And don't even make question how drivers manage to constantly go panic-braking behind a crew of cleaning vehicles that do a constant 40 kph. Is it that f'nv hard to keep your speed at a constant 40 as well without braking all the time? Geez...

Sometime it's hard to tell if it is just a thin layer of snow, or if there is ice lurking underneath.  As the saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Then you have the other end of the spectrum (http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/weather/2010/01/08/von.atlanta.icy.roads.wxia.html).

Nothing a couple of snowplows couldn't solve within a couple of hours (starting from that).

Maybe I've been babied a bit by the snowplow crews here in Chicagoland and up north, in Michigan's UP, but I can't see why snow is anything to freak out over.  Driving in it can be done, and done well as long as a steady hand is kept on the wheel.

Snowstorms in Europe happen so rarely that 1) the drivers can't drive in snow and 2) they aren't prepared for it, at all. (since it would be a waste of money to prepare for snowstorms that happen once in 20 years)

Here, we got a bit of snow, about a foot of it now, still no where near our record for this time of year.

The main problem on that Autobahn were near-hurricane force gusting (11 beaufort). If you plow the road, another snow dune will follow so quick you can't plow against that, especially in a sparsely populated area like northeastern Germany that doesn't have as much snowplows as central and southern Germany.

It depends on which part of Europe. Significant accumulation is common every winter in Germany, and anything east and north of that. However, the amount of snow we saw in the Netherlands, or in France and Britain is highly unusual, especially for such a long period. Last year gave us maybe 3 days of significant snow accumulation that melts away the next day, so very few people take the effort and investment of winter tires.

It's for similar reasons why you commonly see the Plains and Rockies states shut down Interstates during snowstorms.  Often, it's not that the plows can't keep up with the falling snow....instead, they can't keep up with the blowing snow.  All it takes is about 25 MPH or so of sustained wind to keep the snowdunes piling up.

If you didn't go north of the Mogollon Rim, you would have been fairly unlikely to encounter cold.  But in general weather in the interior of the continental US is highly variable in the winter and you have to watch both wind direction and the progression of weather fronts.  In Kansas just in the last two months, we had a few days with temperatures above 60° F. and a few days with temperatures below 0° F.  Old Kansas saying--"If you don't like the weather now, wait 10 minutes."

It seems like the power lines are sensitive infrastructure in the United States. Power outages are quite uncommon in the Netherlands, if an area has no power for like 3 - 4 hours it's already nationwide news. Urban power utilities are always underground, only major power lines are above the ground between power plants and other facilities to distribute power. I can't even remember the last time we went off the grid for more than the blink of the eye.

I must add that we don't have as much natural disasters like in the U.S. Many people on this side of the pond forget that, we don't have ice storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and other extreme weather as much. Tornadoes over EF-1 are VERY rare in Europe.

Here's the crux of the matter.  The vast majority of power utilities are above ground in the US.  Very little of it is below ground.  Combine that with the weather you mentioned, and there's your answer.

Part of it, as it often does, deals with the lower average population density of the US compared to Europe.  Also, here in TN, most rural power was built by and is still supplied by the TVA.  (which started in the FDR administration in the Great Depression)  The project gave electricity to most of the rural south but it was and is done on the cheap.

But, even in Nashville, power goes out a lot more than it did when I lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania or Maryland.  I never owned a UPS (battery backup) until a moved south.

I can only really speak for TN, but my experience here is that Interstates and other major through routes tend to get the most work.  So, just be prepared to switch to the main roads, if necessary.  You won't clinch as many highways that way, but you will get there.

Also, the fact that the weather should be sunny and in the high 30s tomorrow and upper 40s Monday will clear up a lot.

My philosophy on snow has been that if you're getting enough that roads need to be plowed, it's better to stay on the slightly worse backroad then the plowed main road, since the plowed main road is still going to be slick and you're more likely to have to worry about idiots being idiots- and with less traffic you can drive faster

I know it's a bit late to be commenting on this, but we did have sleet down here on January 9th and the weather ticker on the news stated, "Ocala: 31 (degrees) Snow".

QuoteMy philosophy on snow has been that if you're getting enough that roads need to be plowed, it's better to stay on the slightly worse backroad then the plowed main road, since the plowed main road is still going to be slick and you're more likely to have to worry about idiots being idiots- and with less traffic you can drive faster

This doesn't exactly hold true up here...

Not a bad one, but I modify that around there parts.  I find that major municipal streets tend to be the best to stick to when the snow flys.  Then I follow that up with major county highways, and finally IDOT roads.  ISTHA roads tend to be well plowed due to the limited number of miles of the system.  IDOT seems to have a very hard time getting back to anything that's not an interstate.

What's really unfair is all these big storms ALWAYS going up the east coast. Isn't this Washington's second megastorm this season? What I have yet to see is a 20-inch snowfall here in Indiana. The only place in the state that ever seems to get them is up by South Bend, and even that is in a very limited area. Indy and points east got from eight to ten inches last night, but God for once, I want to see a good 20-inch snowfall. I would love to see the day when Marion County has to issue a snow emergency.

Normally you can't see the yellow sign when driving by because the tree obstructs its view, but today it's visible from the street.  That's a tree, not a bush, below the yellow sign. Normally you can walk straight ahead without having any branches in the way.  You wouldn't see the knees of an adult standing in the snow today.

Of the reports I've seen thus far, top honors goes to Colesville, MD, in eastern Montgomery County, with a report of 40 inches.  A large swath of 30+ across Loudoun, Montgomery, Howard, northern Prince Georges, and Anne Arundel Counties.

Dulles reported just under 33, whereas there as just under 18 at DCA (the "Potomac effect", as I'm calling it).

The reason the east coast gets these mega-storms is a similar reason to why South Bend, IN, Ashtabula, OH, Erie, PA, Buffalo and Rochester, NY get 20" snowstorms.  Those cities are all in the lake effect zones of one or more of the great lakes.  The air moving over the relatively warm water picks up the moisture and deposits it on the windward shore as snow.  The east coast storms or the classic 'Noreaster, have part of the low pressure system off the coast where the rotating winds pick up the warm Gulf Stream water.

I should be grateful I'm not going to see the amounts seen farther east, but I'm still not happy about seeing snow tonight.  Especially when IDOT seems to have forgotten to pre-treat parts of I-255.

Can't say I'm happy with accident management in Illinois tonight either; ought to be some sort of advanced warning when a pileup in a cloverleaf has more than the weaving lane blocked.  Not pleasant to see a bunch of flashing lights that appear to be across the whole highway and wonder if one is about to take an unplanned tour of the East St. Louis area after dark.

They must do it differently in the Collinsville District.  Up here, we have VMSs all over the place, and advance warning is usually pretty good, especially on the Tollways.  And District 1 tends not to forget to pretreat the expressway system (nor does ISTHA for that matter).

This morning, I-55 was clear, and I was able to maintain 65-70 mph on wet pavement through Will and DuPage Counties.  Traffic was surprisingly good.  Skilling must've scared enough people into staying home for the day.  :-D

Those are ridiculous delays for such a pathetic amount of snow. Here we've had a light dusting and traffic is moving normally. The sun came out afterwards and started melting it. Last month when we had the really low temperatures the first wave of heavy snow caused mayhem but the second lot of snow a few weeks later caused less trouble because people were prepared for it.

Quote from: Truvelo on February 10, 2010, 01:44:49 PMThose are ridiculous delays for such a pathetic amount of snow.

On four-lane freeways, the left lane becomes almost unused by traffic, many people are afraid to drive on even a thin layer of snow, so such freeways, which often carry between 70,000 and 100,000 AADT are basically reduced to only one lane each way. Add minor accidents to that, and you've got mayhem for dozens of miles in a row. I mean, a 60 mile backup, what's up with that? Such lengths aren't even reached when there is a full road closure.

Another problem is that Dutch freeways are busy for long distances. It's not like in most of the U.S. where you leave the urban area and traffic volumes drop to 20,000 - 30,000 AADT. You can leave Amsterdam, and it's another 80 miles before traffic volumes drop below 50,000. Not because of cross-country commuting, but just because the average Dutch population density is like New Jersey.

Unfortunately, there aren't any permanent VMS's on I-255 in Illinois; there should really be at least one SB before I-64 so one knows if the JB Bridge is not the best route to take.

"Mauna Kea" means "white mountain."  The winter snows are how it got its name.  The snows can get bad enough to close the road to the summit (only one in Hawaii with snowplow guides).

Mauna Loa (an active volcano almost as high as the dormant Mauna Kea) also sometimes gets snow.

Since there were no flurries down by the beach today (not surprised), I decided to search out the white stuff in lower Alabama. I ran into some rain and snow mix about 10 miles north of Milton, Florida, with it becoming all snow just before hitting the state line. Once in Brewton however, it lightened up and stopped about 20 minutes later on my way to Castleberry. Below are a few road related pictures that I took just to show the snow accumulation:

Looking east along Conecuh County 6 in Castleberry, approaching U.S. 31.

Looking westbound along Conecuh County 6 between Castleberry and Interstate 65. There were not many cars on this particular stretch so the road was a bit slushy in places...

Southbound reassurance marker south of Exit 83 (Conecuh County 6). Surprisingly there was a lot of traffic on this stretch of interstate between Exit 83 and Exit 87. And no amount of snow stopped anyone from traveling at an accelerated speed either...

Looking southward down Interstate 65 from atop the Alabama 41 overpass at Exit 77. There were vehicles stopped at all ramps at this interchange letting their children play in the snow along the embankments! I did not get a picture of it but there was even a snowman being built on the northbound on-ramp!

On my way back I did catch one incident where a Floridian stopped in the middle of the road, thus delaying those of us behind him, then deciding to turn right to park. When he got off the road he must have gunned it and slid all the way across the ditch to the woodline...typical Floridian not knowing how drive in the snow...

Someone on Twitter said that.

I found this AP News Story to confirm that:

49 states dusted with snow; Hawaii's the holdout (http://ttp://m.apnews.com/ap/db_16029/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=Zow8gWDg)

And it acknowledges Hawaii but says there's no snow there at the moment:

QuoteHawaii's 13,800-foot Mauna Kea volcano, which often gets snow much of the year at its higher elevations, is the most likely place in the 50th state to have snow, but there "is nothing right now," said research meteorologist Tiziana Cherubini at the Mauna Kea Weather Center. It has been a few weeks since there has been snow in the mountains, and none is in the forecast, ruining a perfect 50-for-50, she said.

Or perhaps climate change is a gradual trend. Or perhaps because, when it's warmer, more water is evaporated up, the storms are bigger, and because it's winter, snow is being produced instead of rain.

I just can't believe that there are winter weather advisories out for the Florida Panhandle.
Its the infamous "cry wolf syndrome". Anytime there is a 2% chance of winter precip the local weather men go IT'S GONNA SNOW, ITS GONNA SNOW!!!  :pan: Altho it is unusual to have a WWA. Thursday even the NWS was very optimistically predicting 2-4" north of I 10.  :pan:
I was in Ft Walton during the Crestview "snowstorm"  :), but the tv news said we had big flakes but it barely stuck to even the grass. We came back to Crestview about 1700 and there was not a trace of snow anywhere. Fooled again!

Did you see the ch10 news from Mobile just before 10am? I guess they broadcast a "special report" on the snow and the anchormen were as giddy as the kids were about the snow.

A Panama City news station website said the snow stuck to the ground in Berrydale and Munson, but they had pictures from Holmes County and DeFuniak Springs where it looked like it accumulated, at least to cover the ground. Either way, I get giddy, too (like the Mobile news reporters), whenever there's a chance for the white stuff this far south. This is the second month in a row that snow has fallen in Florida.

Nothing south of Interstate 10, despite indications that a snow band could move that far south...

I had my fill of snow in Iowa during the holidays, so I was content to not drive north to see snow cover. The drive through Illinois two days after Christmas (https://www.aaroads.com/blog/2010/01/04/snowy-drive-quad-cities-to-paducah/) was enough riding in the snow for me.

Hawai'i gets snow every year on the mountain tops on the Big Island, and some years they see some on Maui.  The only state in the Union that does not see snow on any regular basis is Florida.

Well, Vancouver on average never gets below freezing, and Whistler is still low enough (only 2,200 feet) to be influenced by the nearby ocean. So I can't say I'm that surprised to see there's not enough snow there.

Given that someone seems to get shot there every day, I'd say not without bulletproof windows.  It's at least got such a bad reputation (I can't seem to find a crime map online today to verify this) that it is best avoided period except on the interstates.

Population is 31,000, so that would make 32 homicides per year. Staggering. The murder rate is 20 times the national average. East Saint Louis is a very sad and tragic story (makes most other cities look good, IMHO).  In the 1950s, East Saint Louis was at its height and one of the largest cities in the state with 82,000 people.  Due to many factors; white flight, lack of civic leadership, closure of businesses, schools, etc; East Saint Louis lost about 10,000 or so a decade.  Metro East, once one of the richer parts of the state, rapidly became one of the poorest parts of the state.

It comes with the territory...literally.

I can't speak for New York, but this has been the snowiest Winter in Pennsylvania in years.  I'd have to go back almost 20 years to remember when it seemed like there was a snow storm or Nor'easter hitting us with such frequency as they have been recently.

It has also been the snowiest winter in the Netherlands for at least 4 decades.

Regular winters generate 13 days of snow cover on average. So far we've had... 55 days of snow cover.

the snow is melting, so there are large heaps of mud everywhere.  One large heap of mud wants into the house.  Apparently, when the good lord issued his proclamation that all cats are to be fastidiously clean, some weren't paying much attention...

The white stuff's coming down on-and-off here in Hampton too, and is sticking to my car, though not the ground. However temperatures are already only hovering around freezing, and reports are coming in that there is some accumulation in Virginia Beach, Yorktown, and even into North Carolina.  The forecasts are calling for 1-2 inches of accumulation over tonight and tomorrow morning.

It's been a while since the last March snowfall that I can recall.

The storm that hit the New York area on the night of December 26th was a nasty one. 20 inches or something like that, and windy windy windy. Metro-North was completely shut down all day Monday, the subway was in shambles (some people got stuck on an A train by JFK overnight), and many streets weren't plowed for days. I missed work that Monday on account of it all.

Meanwhile, today we've gotten another 6+ inches up here in Stamford. The roads weren't too bad when I was coming home (early, ~3:30), but my neighborhood hadn't been plowed in a while and was a few inches under. Was still passable, but "fun" nonetheless. Something I learned today: my car has a safety feature that prevents me from overturning the wheel when I start to lose traction. I didn't know that!
Then I attempted to make it up my driveway... yeah, that wasn't happening. I can't clear six inches of snow in my Ford Focus no matter what. So, I ended up parked on the street. On the wrong side, but with all the slipping and sliding I was doing (the street in front of my house is on a hill which I'd eyeball to be about a 10% grade), once I ended up snugly against the first curb I could, I was going to call it good. Of course, I was less up against the curb so much as up against a giant pile of snow from the last storm that was still sitting there, and I had to climb over and get out the passenger side. Then half an hour later the snow plow came by and buried my car.

Looks like I'm digging myself out tomorrow!

It snowed in Wichita, which gave me a chance at my favorite winter sports activity:  shoveling snow.  We got about three inches with no ice underlayer and when I shoveled snow just now, temperatures were close to freezing with no wind.

My personal KDOT RWIS camera feed page shows snow coverage all over the state, with a minimum one lane in each direction clear on I-70 except in far western Kansas, with two lanes clear in both directions on Interstates in eastern and central Kansas.  Kansas Turnpike RWIS cameras (which--sigh--are all at tollbooths instead of on the open road, with the lone exception of one camera in the Flint Hills) show meltwater instead of ice near toll plazas.  I don't think this snow is going to hang around for long.

Yesterday, when the snow first started, the RWIS feed for I-70 milepost 57, which is usually pointed at an overpass, showed a Highway Patrol cruiser responding to a pickup truck which had run off the road and crashed (at low speed, judging from the lack of metal deformation) into the guardrail protecting the median pier.  Five minutes later, when I went to reload my RWIS page from a different computer, the image had been replaced by a message reading "Image temporarily unavailable."  It might have been a convenient malfunction but I incline to suspect a high degree of coordination between RWIS and law enforcement.

Public schools in Wichita and surrounding districts had a snow day today, despite being in session yesterday.  Main roads were completely clear and the side streets were sufficiently passable that I went for a walk as normal (though I had to shorten my stride on glare ice and walk through one snowdrift).  The reason cited for the schools closure was low temperatures (11° F low, 15° F high) combined with wind chills which were considered dangerously low for young children sent out to wait for school buses.

Several Interstates are closed in Georgia: I-20 in Conyers; I-85 in Union City; and I-20 between Fulton Industrial Blvd. and I-285 (West Atlanta).

Here in Atlanta, I just received notification that my children will enjoy their FOURTH consecutive snow day tomorrow.  Snow hit Sunday night, but temperatures have hovered around freezing and dropped into teens/twenties at night.  This morning, many residential streets still had icy patches; I saw several cars that had spun out on my way to work.  But more to the point of the above quotes, GDOT was still having trouble with clearing icy patches on the metro interstates this morning.  One reason offered by a GDOT spokesman on TV this morning: storm was a "once in 10 or 15 years" event and it would be cost-prohibitive (in terms of opportunity cost for other uses of $$$) to have enough materials to clear all of the interstate lane miles in the area (above chart suggests ATL has sixth highest total in country).  I guess it is sort of "wait for warmer temps" approach (32 is predicted high for both today and tomorrow - 40 on Friday and 48 on Saturday).

The amount of freezing rain the area received after the snowfall was far less than anticipated; minimal power outages.  Made life a lot easier than it could have been.

We received about 8 inches from this latest storm at my house. But the roads are totally fine...they did a good job salting and plowing. I was just wandering around the area for the past few hours in my car and even the most minor side streets are fine. Yet, we still got out of school--but I'm not complaining.

I received word from my parents today that with the most recent storm our fence in Idaho is now fully covered in snow- 5 feet of accumulation. Here's a shot I took while I was back there last week- the top bar is at 5 feet.

This is a lot of snow even for there at this time of year- in February the accumulation gets this high once every couple years, but none of us remember the last time we had this much in January.  It's a bit of a concern if it keeps up, because we're running low on snow storage space (ie we may not have a driveway soon) and the roof is going to have to be shoveled if there's another big snowstorm without any melt, which is a huge hassle.

We only had about an inch or two yesterday, but it froze during the nighttime hours.  Getting home from work was slower than normal and only the main roads were clear.

By now, it looks like most of the snow and ice on the roads has melted except for any shaded areas.

Snow has turned evening rush hour in DC into an absolute nightmare.  Even the Feds cutting loose 2 hours early didn't help.

The problem was the rain we had during the day, which washed away the pre-treatment the DOTs had done.  So the rain turning to sleet then to heavy wet snow meant the roads had no chance.

Here's the view (http://twitpic.com/3tp1t3) on US 1 in Huntington (south of the Beltway).  Drivers were having EXTREME difficulty trying to get up the hill.  And this is only the first of several hills on US 1.  By far not the only situation like this in the DC area.

Word is that I-70 west of Frederick is even worse of a nightmare.

Nowhere near as bad here.  But, we got another inch or two here.  Just enough to muck up the roads this morning and make the locals restless.  This is the most number of winter storms we've had since I've moved to Tennessee.  Of course, this winter is still a picnic compared to more northerly locales.

I usually drive home from my office in downtown DC, but this time left my car in an underground garage, and started my way back home around 5pm (my usual quitting time is 6:30pm).  Metrorail was a mess, but Metrobus was even worse, with almost no service at the normally busy Ballston Metro station and, according to other riders, even less at the Rosslyn station.  I heard others on my route had been waiting up to two hours, rather than the usual twenty minutes between buses.  What buses were out there often were spinning their wheels and nearly getting stuck while leaving their stops.  My seven-mile trip home took over two hours.

I-676 in Phila at the 8th Street exit, EB, there is a slight upgrade.  There were 3 tractor trailers and 5 cars stuck or stranded there.  I was able to watch this via one of the PennDOT camera while surfing.  One of the tractor trailers you could see pull forward a few feet, move back, pull forward, for about 45 min, all stuck against the center median barrier.  The cops were forcing everyone off the exit, traffic was backed up for quite a while.  You could see a pack of about 30 people coming over and helping to push people over to exit.  Eventually PennDOT plows were able to make their way through traffic, PennDOT tow trucks were able to tow the stranded cars off, and a larger tow truck was able to pull the tractor trailer up the hill.

According to the Phila Inquirer...something like 150 SEPTA buses were stuck, some as long as 12 hrs.  One bus had passengers who slept in the bus overnight.

Philadelphia did not do well today.  But we weren't expecting what we got - the forecast kept going up during the day yesterday and through the storm.  I had to go to work (my employer's policy is that we only close if there's a state of emergency; if the schools close, that triggers a "two-hour grace period for late arrivals.")

So I left home about 9:30.  At some point I noticed that the streets hadn't been actually cleaned, so much as had the snow packed into an inch-or-two-thick layer of slippery stuff.

Was out for an errand earlier this evening and it's very quiet, streets still messy; went out of my way to check on my own car (parked on the street two blocks from home) and saw it's going to take some effort to extricate it this weekend if we don't get a good amount of melting.

Certain neighborhoods of Philadelphia have steep hills, and due to bad experiences in ice storms during the '90s, I think certain bus routes in those neighborhoods just pre-emptively stop running in snowstorms now.  I heard about that one bus that was stuck overnight.  The worst story in this media market was a pedestrian in Wilmington, Del., who was run over by a plow.

We're looking at 18-24+ inches of snow when all is said and done late Wednesday here in SW Chicagoland.  Personally, I think we'll see 24" locally.  The NWS has us in the 20+ inch zone, and the most I saw was from Jerry Taft on ABC 7 with one model predicting, I kid you not, over 32" for my city.  :-o

Should be interesting.  I'll double check the thumb screws on the Yooper Scooper (snow scoop (http://www.composters.com/pbj/imageGallery.php?imageID=474)).  Beats the crap out of a snow blower - no gas, no clogs, no snow blowing back in my face.  :sombrero:

NWS upgraded the winter storm warning to a blizzard waring in the st. louis metro area, and none of the people on KTVI/KPLR ever recalled the NWS using that waring for St. Louis County.

Major ice storm is still brewing for counties just south and east of St. Louis though.

Thankfully, we're being spared that.  I don't want to think how an area like Nashville would react to a true blizzard.  It's warm enough here that we're just getting rain.  But, we've got a wind advisory until tomorrow morning.  (sounds like the same storm to me)

Unlike the penny-ante storms we get down here where people hoard bread, milk and eggs, the storm you guys farther north look to be getting is the kind to make sure you have plenty of supplies and stay someplace safe and warm.

This morning I woke up at 7, looked outside, and saw that it didn't look too bad. Did my usual morning routine, but decided to add an extra five minutes to my usual fifteen-minute walk to the lab. Holy cow... it ended up taking me an hour to walk a mile in that stuff (though that included warming up in the lobby of the university's dorms for fifteen minutes in the middle of the walk). While I was in the lobby, I was watching KOCO and they were reporting -20F wind chills.

It snowed here!!! Like an inch and no school.. but it's supposed to get down to 9° tonight.
It sucks that my basketball game got canceled though, cause school did..
It started at 78° yesterday (1-31-11) then it dropped to 55° around 8:00pm, it started raining at about 7:00pm, then it turned to hail, then the hail covered the ground, it almost looked like snow..

Nice pictures, but color me a bit unimpressed.  We've got a couple of legacy inches on the ground right now, and then it's starting to finally come down.  When all is done by 3pm tomorrow, we should have about 18-24 inches.  Odds are, schools will be closed tomorrow, but be open on Thursday.  Supposed to get down to -6F on Thursday morning.

I'm still not fazed.  After going to college in Houghton, MI, and seeing an average of over 200 inches of snow in a season, with my first year up there having 328 inches of snow (still not the record), I've seen more.  You just shovel and salt and move on.

There's no way the plows can keep up with this stuff.  Even with having gone to college in Houghton, and braving the Blizzard of Jan 1-3, 1999 going back up to college during it, this is the worst storm I've ever seen.

The plows are out, but all roads in Will and Lake Counties, IL are closed to travel.  Apparently Lake Co will ticket, Will Co does not.  Currently, and this is unprecedented AFAIK, there are several interstate closures:

I-80 from Morris to Princeton
I-88 from Rock Falls to the Quad Cities
I-74 from Peoria to Galesburg
I-39 - all but the tollway section
I-155 - all
I-57 south of I-80 (southern extent unknown)
I-55 from MLK Drive to LSD

They're still evacuating people from LSD, even at a quarter to six in the morning.  LSD, of course, is still closed (entire extend from 57th to Hollywood).

As the waves hit the breakwater, they'd reflect off and run into other waves coming in and shoot up in the air 20+ feet.  The water was choked with rounded ice chunks ranging from the size of a baseball to the size of sofa.  As the waves smacked the ice around, the chunks would cascade around like so many boulders.
Hope people can dig their cars out before the big chill tonight or else they'll be stuck in a glacier.

At noon those same Illinois roads are listed as closed The Chicago area cameras are showing empty roads.

As for father downstate St Louis Main roads look cleared but empty. Peoria is snow covered and empty.

US 67 and US 24 in western Illinois are open -sort of with one bad  lane each.

City of Monmouth has plowed all its streets. Sun is out in western Illinois Blizzard still underway in Northeast.

Quincy-Admas county expects winds later and that will make east west rural roads impassable again

Right now, only Lake (IL) County is preventing anyone from traveling.  The ban here in Will County is gone, and many main roads are passable.  However, some closures still remain such as Weber Rd between Renwick and Airport Roads for a downed power line.  Most streets in town here are plowed enough to be passable.  They had all 61 trucks out last night and this morning, and they used several private snowplows to help clear the snow.  The big question now is where to put it.

I doubt speed traps went up along the roadways, but if a cop paced you doing 50, he could pull you over.  However, with the rain/ice/snow/wind that came through, getting up to 45 was optimistic especially going through the mountains.

We had a delayed school day. I hate this weather so much.. Give me my 100° weather back!! I wore shorts today, in 12° weather. The low tonight is 8°F. Crazy, for West Texas.

But I guess I can say to y'all that y'alls "hot" weather is nothing.. Try over 20 consecutive days of 100° or more!

And, I'll take 20 days below freezing over 20 days over 90, anytime!

Oh, and the NWS is predicting snow again on Sunday and Wednesday. The baboons may never have class again.

It seems like the popular thing to do with all the snow is pile it up right on corners, making it next to impossible to merge into traffic without risking getting hit, since your entire front end has to be into the lane before you can see anything.

In Wichita we got about five inches.  We were expected to get about a quarter-inch of ice before the snow came, but we did not, so that was a mercy.  However, the snow fell with a lot of wind (near-blizzard conditions) so there was a lot of drifting and, as a consequence, a lot of cars and other relatively low-clearance vehicles getting stuck in unplowed side streets.  After getting stuck twice (the first time badly) at the north end of my street, and having to be helped out both times, I "paid it forward" and dug out the intersection myself.  (I don't think too many people saw me doing it, which is a good thing since I didn't want to be asked questions about where I was putting the snow.)

Temperatures were close to 40° F today, but were in the 0-10° F range with brutal wind chills while the snow was falling and for a day afterward, so the Wichita public schools have had three consecutive snow days.  This has generated much anger locally but the school district has defended the cancellations on the basis that buses were getting stuck or severely slowed down in side streets, thus raising the risk that children would have to wait half an hour or more in frigid wind (often with inadequate winter clothing) in near-darkness with no ability to let themselves back into their houses.

It had more to do with salt.  Salt, in sufficient quantity, will kill ground cover, including the fescue and Bermuda grass which are the most popular lawn plants in my neighborhood.  Although Wichita doesn't salt side streets, significant amounts of salt and other deicing chemicals get tracked into subdivisions when cars turn off main roads.  I had decided to try to pile the snow in front of the curb face, but there was a lot of it, and not every shovelful would go where I aimed it, so I didn't want people taking down my name and exacting promises not to let so much as a single chunk of salty snow fall on their lawns.

Personally, I think political enemies need and deserve twelve full feet of snow.

That last paragraph in my previous post was actually (believe it or not) a joke, as was Jake's post preceding it.  To start with, actually dumping 12" of snow in someone's driveway is tortious, and 12' of snow would probably also qualify as criminal damage.

Agreed, it is possible to take politics too seriously--but what else can we do when life and liberty can be taken away as a consequence of political decisions?

Still doesn't beat where I went to college (Houghton, MI) where the snow started in September my first year and went through May (1995-96).  Even snowed there on May 1st that year.  Measurable snow.

I can't wait for the white crud to melt; I am getting sick of dealing with the large piles that take up half a lane, much less those that require using a lane for a movement other than what it's marked for (as in using the left turn lane as a straight lane because a large pile/wall of snow is taking up the normal straight lane).

Up and around Nashville, we got 1-3 inches last night.  It started in mid afternoon and went into early evening.

Some roads were still snow covered this morning, but the sun's melting some of it even though it's only 22 degrees.

Fortunately, for me, this was the light fluffy stuff that was easy to brush off my van as I had forgotten to put a snow brush in there.

We have had eight inches in Wichita this time.  The snow started falling early Tuesday morning and had stopped by Wednesday noon.  As was the case previously, there was no ice accumulation before the snow arrived, and this time there was not much wind while the snow was falling, so we have had much less of a problem with drifts.  Temperatures are still below freezing but we have had more or less unblocked sunshine since Wednesday morning, so any paved surface that is not actually covered by snow or sloshed with slush is now dry.

Wichita public schools had another snow day on Wednesday, bringing the total for this season to six, and overrunning the five snow days allowed for in the calendar.  School superintendents all over Kansas are tearing out their hair because the excess snow days make it hard for them to comply with the requirement (in state law) to have school in session a minimum 180 days annually.  For some reason, not satisfactorily explained in the local media, it is now unthinkable to have makeup days in late spring.

Snow blowers are now popular in Wichita, but I am sticking with a hand shovel.  Snow blowers never seem to be able to dislodge snow packed into tire tracks.  I suspect they produce enough heat to thaw nearby virgin snow into slabs and chunks since that is what I have to shift whenever I start shoveling close to an area which has been cleared by a blower.

when is "late spring"?  Does your school system let out before June 21st, thereby implying days to be appended to the end of the year?

When I was in school, it let out around the 25th of June, so end-of-year would be early summer for me.  the only alternative I could think of would be to cut into the April vacation, which is "early spring", but I'd imagine parents who already had vacations booked would be mildly displeased by that alternative.

letting the damn calendar year run into the summer is about the only solution.  One year, our last day was July 1st, but hey, to make up for that, we did get seven consecutive Wednesdays off due to snow.  Eerie, but when our break in the middle of the workweek came to an end, we sure didn't like it.
Title: Re: Snow...

When I was in school (longer ago now than I care to think), it always let out a little after Memorial Day, and the understanding was that any snow days in excess of those budgeted would have to be made up at the end of the school year, generally in early June.  In Wichita school is generally in session (except for breaks) from late August to early June.  The school district right now is talking about "funding" the excess snow days by fiddling with the calendar at the school level, e.g. by cancelling scheduled inservice days, and that sounds a whole lot more complicated than just keeping kids in school however long it takes.  I can't believe there are that many families who start $10,000 nonrefundable vacations the very next day after school ends.
Title: Re: Snow...
Post by: agentsteel53 on February 10, 2011, 04:53:01 PM
yeah, we started as late as September 9th, and had three week-long vacations (Christmas, February, and April) and also a smattering of Jewish holidays, which were mostly in the fall (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur) so our school year lasted a while.

I think the timing of the summer was a climate thing - by offsetting it about a half-month to a month compared to other places, we took advantage of when Boston's climate was indeed the most summery.

"inservice days"?  We had something called "workshop days" but they were half-days, not entire days off.

If I'm counting correctly, this would be the 6th snow event for the Nashville area since the start of December, right?  I honestly don't remember Nashville ever having that many snow events in one winter (fall/winter in this case) as long as I've been alive.

Columbia, SC has had two snow events so far this winter, which is the most in one season since my in-laws first moved down here (in 2003), and last winter they had their first snow event since they moved here.  This latest system only brought us rain last night (and it was sunny and beautiful the rest of today), but WIS-TV says that Newberry Co (NW of Columbia) got wet snowflakes that melted on contact, so I'm assuming Greenville/Spartanburg could have gotten some accumulation.

The schools here in Stamford have taken to scheduling school years of 185 days from the getgo so they can have five snow days without having to make any of them up. Of course, that number has already been exceeded this year (I believe there have been seven), so now the board is scrambling to figure out how to do makeups. Their method of choice has been to poll the parents by phone on whether to shorten the February break, shorten the April break, or add days at the end. Not sure if they've reached a decision yet...

This is a recent idea, though, and wasn't practice when I was in school. Then they always just added as many days as necessary to the end of the year, with the provision that they couldn't go into July and would start cannibalizing the April break if they filled June up (which almost happened one year but never actually did, at least not in my time).
The thing is, the high schools wouldn't reschedule their final exams, so we'd end up with extra days at the end of the year after finals... for which nobody would show up and no teacher would count an absence against you. Sweet deal.
