Bellows, mechanical contrivance for creating a jet of air, consisting usually of a hinged box with flexible sides, which expands to draw in air through an inward opening valve and contracts to expel the air through a nozzle. The bellows was invented in the European Middle Ages and was commonly used to speed combustion, as in a blacksmith's or ironworker's forge, or to operate reed or pipe organs.

I've been on sections of the German Autobahn that have no speed limit at all.

I've driven on the 85-mph TX-130.

The highest number I've seen on a speed limit sign while driving was 120 km/h.

Same here, except instead of the Autobahn, I drove the "Montanabahn" (reasonable and prudent, except at night or for trucks) in 1996 while it was still in effect, until killjoys forced imposition of a fixed speed limit.

70 on I-81 in West Virginia and on I-10 from Slidell to Biloxi.  Driven parts of the PA Turnpike, I-93 in NH, and I-70 in MD that are now 70, but were 65 at the time.

Did see a 100 Km/hr sign in Quebec

If considering only what I have seen while actually on the road in real life - 75 MPH.

I've definitely seen 75 MPH before on the road, but I don't think I've ever seen 80 MPH (and definitely not 85 MPH or anything higher).

75 mph in New Mexico and Arizona.

The highest number I've seen on a speed limit sign is 110 in Nova Scotia and Quintana Roo, but of course that's a lower actual speed limit.

I don't remember what the urban speed limits were on the motorway near Copenhagen's airport or in the Helsinki/Espoo area because I was on buses and was more interested in looking around than in the speed limits.

By the same token, the highest number I've seen is 90, on the freeway to Reykjavík from the airport, but that's hardly remarkable once translated. The highest actual limit is 70 mph, owing to my lack of driving pretty much anywhere west of the Appalachians.

Non-Freeway: 70 mph

My dad has seen a 140 kph in Poland a few years back.

Lowest: 1 mph (was a pedestrian speed limit and temporary)

The poll also doesn't have an option for "no speed limit", which at least two of us have experienced.

This topic doesn't really need a poll, anyway. Just because you can do a poll doesn't mean you should.

Considering different classes of roads, I've been on the 85 mph toll road in Texas, 80 mph Interstates, 75 mph urban freeways, and 75 mph narrow two-lane roads.

Regarding urban freeways, I-20 in Midland doesn't look urban, but it definitely has urban-level traffic, so I count it for this purpose.  I found that the speed limit was too fast when a long line of cars backed up an exit onto the freeway and drivers were suddenly pulling onto the shoulder to get in line.  That limit has been reduced to 65.  I-20 in Abilene and the 183A, Loop 1, and SH 45N toll roads aren't exactly urban.  I don't count the 75 mph managed lanes because they're managed so as not to act like urban freeways.  I'd say the highest truly urban freeways I've been on are I-20 across Fort Worth and Arlington, and I-35W in south Fort Worth, with speed limits of 70.

A refugee from security wildlife (aka security robots) who happens to be high (unclear whether it's due to elevation or if it's the other kind of high).

I've seen 70 MPH in PA as a passenger, but haven't driven any of the upgraded roadways since before they were upgraded. On non-freeways, the highest I've seen is 55. On 2-lane roads, the highest I've seen posted is 50, but there are grey areas where 55 is posted before the road drops to 2 lanes, and there is a significant distance until a lower posted limit appears (this happens on NJ 73 South where it drops to 2 lanes after the Atlantic City Expressway).

If we're breaking it down by type of road, for me it's the following:

Interstate/motorway/other freeway–75 mph

Divided highway with at-grade intersections–70 mph

Two-lane road–65 mph, although I'm pretty sure I recall Mexico 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum being a two-lane road posted at 110 km/h back in 2002. Street View shows it's now four-lane divided and posted at 100.

East of the Mississippi the highest I can recall on any two-lane road is 60 mph on various roads in Florida.

My breakdown:

Toll freeway: 85mph (southern part of TX 130 toll road)
Interstate or other freeway: 80mph (multiple freeways in Mountain/Great Plains states)
Divided non-freeway: 75mph (multiple US and state highways in west and south Texas)
2-lane: 75mph (at least one US highway in east Texas)

As you might guess, Texas is my favorite state for driving.

My breakdown -

Freeway / Interstate - 85 MPH, TX-130
Four-Lane At-Grade with Intersections - 75 MPH, U.S. 77, U.S. 59, U.S. 281, TX-35, TX-290, etc.
2-Lane Roadway - 75 MPH, U.S. 59, TX-35, FM 2678, US-83, etc.

The beauty is how wide open Texas is, there's not an interstate everywhere. But you get some pretty damn high speeds (mostly 70, a lot also 75) almost anywhere in Texas to get where you're going, two lane, four-lane, freeway, etc.

I-10 and 20 are 80 mph in western Texas. Oddly enough Michigan's max speed is now 75 mph and the closest state with a speed limit that high or higher is Arkansas. South Dakota is 80 mph but North Dakota is 75 mph seems like it'd be the same to me.

Funny, all the mentions of TX-130 and its 85 mph limit, but I thought I-10 and I-20 also had an 85 mph limit in western Texas.
I-10 and 20 are 80 mph in western Texas. Oddly enough Michigan's max speed is now 75 mph and the closest state with a speed limit that high or higher is Arkansas. South Dakota is 80 mph but North Dakota is 75 mph seems like it'd be the same to me.
West Virginia is currently going through legislation to increase their's to 75 MPH. North Carolina tried for 75 MPH about five years ago though didn't pass fully, though could happen again the future.

I've been on sections of the German Autobahn that have no speed limit at all.

When I drove the Autobahn in the '60s, there was only one section (near Stuttgart) where I even SAW a speed limit. About 100 klicks as I recall due to the hilly terrain and narrow lanes.

Freeway: 85 mph
Divided highway: 75 mph
Multi-lane highway with a center turn lane: 75 mph
2-lane road: 75 mph

All in Texas

80 on the Interstate almost all the way across the state, but I've been on no-limit autobahns too (not the driver, I was too young at the time). My dad said his average speed on a no-limit autobahn was 100 mph. For everyone saying 100 kph is the highest they've ever seen, it's not. 100 kph translates to about 62 mph.

Don't know if this fits, but I heard somewhere that US 66 was originally planned to be an Autobahn-style highway with a 100 mph speed limit. Two corners on the south end of the Veterans Parkway in Bloomington, Illinois, were built to handle 100-mph traffic.

Not originally. The US highway network predates the autobahn and the concept of freeways. It would not surprise me if IDOT (or whatever it was called post-WWII) wanted to convert US 66 to some sort of autobahn-style road before the interstate network was approved in 1956, given that highway's importance to the Illinois economy. Eisenhower wasn't the only person impressed with the first German autobahns.

The old four-lane segments of US 66 in Illinois have a lot of beautiful broad curves besides Bloomington. The old US 66 bypasses of Lincoln, Pontiac, Litchfield and other communities can also handle high speed traffic.

I got to drive on the "Montanabahn" in October, 1997. And it was not just freeways that were "derestricted" but most rural 2 lane state highways as well. I drove I-90 to Missoula and then the next day went up 93 to Kalispell and Whitefish, then back down US 2 to Spokane and spent that night there. (Since I was a bit unclear at the time what they would consider "reasonable and prudent" I chose to keep to 70 - 75 on I-90 and about 65 on the 2 lanes, except a couple of times when it started raining when I slowed to 55.) In the short time I was there I only saw 2 vehicles which were "abusing" the "R&P" standard and both were "company" pickups and both had Idaho plates. (Not the same company though.)

I have been on a lot of 75 routes since but have not made it back to any of the ones later increased to 80 yet. I just have not had any reason to go back to Idaho, Montana or Utah, etc. in recent years. I am thinking of going over to Idaho or Montana later this year just so I can say I have been on an 80 m.p.h. highway.

To break it down:
Freeway/Interstate: 80 MPH on I-29 in South Dakota
Expressway with intersections: 70 MPH on US-83 and ND-13 in North Dakota
Two-laner: 65 MPH on various US and State Routes in North Dakota and South Dakota

130 km/h roughly translates to 80 mph, which is high by our standards, but actually doesn't seem that high for Europe. Pretty much any freeway in Ontario has traffic routinely moving at 140-150 km/h despite the 100 km/h limit.

It just got a little easier (for most of us, anyways) to see 110 km/h!

110 is now posted on 3 Ontario highways (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/highway-speed-limits-jump-to-110-km-h-in-pilot-project-1.5295253): A segment of the QEW, ON 402, and most of ON 417.

Obviously, 110 km/h isn't technically the highest speed most of us have seen (it translates to about 68 mph). But, numerically, it is certainly the highest speed limit that I have seen while on the road.

And, it is certainly conceivable that someone from Ontario has never seen a limit higher than that; especially if they don't travel much, given that NY and much of New England don't have limits higher than 65 mph. Heck, if I hadn't been west of Erie, PA, 110 km/h would be the outright highest speed limit (in terms of speed) that I have seen too!

Whoops. I did think about PA itself before positng, only long enough to consider I-90, which is all 65 mph except the awful 55 mph through Erie. My statement would have been accurate a few years ago, but you are right, PA does have some 70 mph segments now.

PennDOT only posts 70 mph I believe on the turnpikes. US-15 is 65 mph.

Edit -
From my knowledge of driving some of Pennsylvania highways, I thought this was the case, but it appears I-99 has a 70 mph stretch, and isn't tolled or part of the Turnpike after looking on Street View.

Substandard entrance and exit ramps are what most likely keeps this section of I-70 at 55.  PSP also has (or at least used to have) predatory enforcement of the 55 mph limit.  It's been a few years since I was last on that section, but any time I was ever on it, I saw several vehicles pulled over; presumably for speeding.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are separate entities.  The PTC basically raised everything that was previously 65 to 70 once their initial testing was done.  PennDOT is far more conservative, but parts of US 15, I-99, I-79, I-80, and I-380 all have 70 mph limits.

The I-99 segment posted at 70 mph was definitely refreshing on our way back from Toronto this summer because it came after a couple of hours spent mostly on two-lane roads. They were pretty good two-lane roads, but because of the truck traffic it sure was nice to get to open it up again.

I-476 had lower speed limits in the Philadelphia area up to, IIRC, roughly the end of the work zone at the northern end of the widened portion; the speed limit also dropped through the tunnel and for the whole portion to the north of the end of the ticket system.

The general rule with the Turnpike is 70 mph generally, with 55 mph through tunnels and toll plazas (as well as construction zones), plus the odd 45 or 35 mph zones approaching the ends of some of the extensions.

(Also, the toll roads in PA are owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, not PennDOT, including speed limits.)

Didn't realize how unusual 70 was in Pennsylvania. Last time I was out there (June), I went from DC up towards Victor, using US-15. Bit infuriating to enter into New York, switch to an interstate, and then suddenly have to bring it down to 65? I don't get it.

My point being, I've only driven a few major roads in PA, and one of them was posted at 70, so I would have thought it was a bit more common.

From what I've seen, I wouldn't say it's unusual, just not the "norm". Just about every segment of turnpike is posted at 70 mph, with a few other freeways and interstate highways posted at 70 mph. The default speed limit though is 65 mph.

Compare that to, say, Virginia, where just about every highway was 65 mph (I-85 had an exception and was 70 mph since 2006) and when they raised the speed limit to 70 mph in 2010, just about all the rural interstate mileage was increased to 70 mph, it wasn't just a select few highways like in Pennsylvania.

New York ought to raise their rural speed limit to 70 mph. Same goes with New Jersey. On a road like the New Jersey Turnpike, it's easy to be flowing along smoothly with everybody else on the road, then look down at your speedometer and you're doing 80 - 85 mph. You don't really stand out though, because everybody else is doing that same speed essentially.

The turnpike could reasonably even be as high as 75 mph, but definitely should at least be posted at 70 mph.

That's New York for you. The nice thing is, you don't really have to worry about a speeding ticket until you hit 80 (or speed limit +15), so traffic still moves along just as good if not better than it does in neighboring states.

I wouldn't say 70 mph is rare in PA, but US 15 is actually one of the stranger 70 mph segments (IMO), which may be why, after seeing 70 on that road in particular, you assumed it was the norm. That stretch of US 15 is the only 70 mph segment I've been on period where I don't feel comfortable setting the cruise to upper 70's-80 mph, due to the curvature and the grades. Segments like this (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.4231903,-77.0821507,12.67z/data=!5m1!1e1), for example, I would imagine being among the last rural freeways to switch to 70 mph, rather than the first.

If you're looking for a list of 70 mph segments, vdeane hit on all the main ones above. It's certainly not all of the rural freeways, but it's a pretty good chunk of them, including most everything maintained by PTC.
In fact, I-90, I-78, and I-81 (?) are the only 2di's that don't have any 70 mph segments. As I mentioned earlier, I-90 is still stuck at 65 mph, despite being significantly flatter and straighter than US 15 -- but 65 mph is a breeze compared to the 12+ mile 55 mph segment near Erie!

If the speed limit on the PA Turnpike was 10 mph higher than the Thruway, I think that would be the biggest irony in roadgeek history. You literally couldn't have 2 more opposite extremes than those 2 roads when it comes to design standards, median widths, etc.  :spin:

I forget which airport it was that showed the "250Kt speed limit to 30 NM". That is the general rule in Class B airspace in the US, but one airport (it may have been foreign) actually POSTED the limit. I have never flown equipment that was capable of much above 200Kt.

Was referring to the New Jersey Turnpike when mentioning 75 mph.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is appropriate at 70 mph. There's no way it would ever pass for higher, I'm surprised they even approved 70 mph, especially on narrow stretches like I-476 that have no room for error to the left.

I did the 85 mph limit on TX-130 in May. Felt absolutely surreal driving that fast legally, but it's easy to see why it's allowed–there's not too much traffic there, and it's much better than the 5 mph I got to go on I-35 through Austin on the way there.

Highest number and highest 2-lane:  Mackenzie Highway, Northwest Territories, 110 km/h (68 mph for metric-challenged Yanks and Brits)

Highest speed recently:  75 mph in freeways in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho,

Highest speed limit on a non-state maintained road:  45 mph on the Golden Gate Bridge

I was on the rural highways of Nevada when there was no daytime speed limit, but I was a child then and not driving so I'm not sure it counts.

There are a lot of county maintained roads in Southern and Eastern Sacramento county (Hedge Road, Eagle Nest Road, eastern Kiefer Blvd, etc) that, to my knowledge, have NEVER had a speed limit sign. I moved away in 1991 and the bill reauthorizing the 65MPH speed limit (and defaulting 55MPH on unposted two-lane undivided roads) was in 1995-6. Sacramento County MAY have posted some 55MPH signs since then, but there weren't any speed limit SIGNS before then.
Prior to 1974, Watt Ave south of the American River in Sacramento City was unposted and therefore 65MPH.

I know that I saw portions of 7th Standard Road posted for 65MPH in July 2019. As far as I know, that's a Kern County road.

Depends what state you're in.  NJ's counties posts limits on nearly every single roadway.

And for that matter, in New Jersey 55 mph is the highest on a county roadway...unless you want to include toll roads administered by agencies or authorities run by the state or bi-state, in which case the highest limit is 65.

In Texas, the default speed limit for a rural non-state road is 60.  I've been on plenty of roads with no speed limit signs, but those are mostly gravel roads on which going that fast would be a mistake.  That's similar to a no-speed-limit situation, in which you go as fast as you feel safe going.  With metes-and-bounds surveying, in much of the state county roads have a lot of curves, including right-angle turns.  All over the areas I've been, paved county roads tend to have speed limit signs.  The highest signed speed limit I've seen on a county road is 55.  The highest speed limit a city can set is 75 (this includes a city's authority to set speed limits on highways, including freeways, which is concurrent with, but subordinate to, TxDOT's authority).  The highest speed limit a county can set is 70 (counties cannot set speed limits on state highways), except that counties can set speed limits of 75 on freeways.  The only county road freeways I know of are toll roads run by county toll authorities.  Those and toll roads run by regional tollway authorities and regional mobility authorities have a maximum limit of 75, and are non-state roads.  State roads have the highest speed limit options, because only TxDOT can set a speed limit of 80 or 85.

I think TxDOT still set the speed limit... after asking for a bribe:

Quote
The tolling company lobbied hard for the higher limit. However, the state determined that such a high speed limit would require special consideration, specifically a $100 million payment to the state. To be fair, the state said it could do an 80 mph limit for only $67 million.

The Central Texas Turnpike System, which includes the northern part of SH 130, 45N, 45SE, and the fully-tolled section of Loop 1, is run by TxDOT.  The included part of 130, and 45SE, have speed limits of 80.  Other toll roads in the Austin area, excluding the southern part of 130, are run by the RMA and have a maximum limit of 75.  The southern part of SH 130 is run by the concessionaire under the authority of TxDOT, which has the right to set the speed limit.

I didn't know until I checked just now, but SH 45SW is run by the RMA.  That number is now split between authorities.  It's also a state highway, while most other RMA roads are not.  The only other one I know of is SH 550/I-169.  Toll 49 near Tyler is often called Loop 49, but the open section was removed from the designation when the road was transferred to the RMA and is not a state highway.

130 km/h on E18 in Finland (but now I believe the highest allowed there is 120 km/h now) and 80 MPH on I-15 in Utah.

I can't find much information on this old limit. About what time frame were you in Finland?

The 130 km/h limit on motorways was in effect in the 1990's and early 2000's, then it was cut back to 120 km/h.

Finland has higher speed limits during the warm season (roughly April to October).  November to March, posted limits go down to a maximum of 80 km/h on arterial highways and 100 km/h on motorways (yes, nearly all of the  speed limit signs outside urbanized  areas are changed-out twice a year).

Traffic signs in Finland are discussed pretty well  on this page (https://vayla.fi/web/en/road-network/traffic-signs) and overall driving rules can be found here (https://www.expat-finland.com/pdf/driving_in_finland.pdf) (.pdf).

Changed out? They can't just put a flap on it and flip it twice a year, like they do with the "bridge ices before road" signs in the US?

Willing to bet nobody actually slows down, rather it's just an artificial limit based on functional class and weather.

I decided to vote "50 or bellow" even thought that is incorrect, only because the Spanish word for what one does with a bellows also has the far better known meaning of "to f***" :sombrero:.

Fix that to: "...like they do in some southern states in the US?" The majority of states don't use flip signs, and even in states that do not all signs are designed to flip.

South Dakota, despite having south in its name, is not a southern state. We have signs that say "watch for ice on bridge" all over the place here.

Those permanent "Bridge ices before road" signs are used in Texas, too.  Years ago they had the flip signs, and they were closed and opened each year.  On the bottom back side of the sign, which was exposed when it was closed, there was a "Don't mess with Texas" stamp.  I once saw a paper that showed when those signs were to be opened and closed, with longer open seasons to the north.

They're used everywhere.  In seems ridiculous, but I can see why you might want such signs in places where it isn't obvious that there's a bridge ahead.  There are culverts with dirt and grass on each side of the road, where you can drive by for years and not even know it isn't solid ground.  But if you're unfamiliar with the road, and the visibility isn't very good, which can happen in winter storms, it's nice to have a warning of a bridge ahead.

It amazes me how many people don't realize bridges ice up before the rest of the road does. Or that it often gets icy under bridges, which I'm not sure I've ever seen a sign for.

I am willing to bet that they do.  In Finland, traffic fines are set as a function of income (called "day fines").  So someone that has a salary of millions of Euros will pay much, much more than someone earning say €50,000 a year.

Since the average speed has been increasing since cars were first made. When do you guys think we will see a 100mph speed limit that is safe to travel at & also feels comfortable.

What would have to change in order for this to occur.

Taking the controls out of the driver's hands.

Making sure all tires have ratings to handle 100 mph.

Tremendously safer safety equipment on the roads.  Guardrails and even concrete barriers aren't made to withstand 100 mph speeds, especially trucks.

Tremendously longer accel/decal lanes.  Even at the current preferred guidance of 1,200 feet, they would be too short for most vehicles to accelerate or decelerate in the proper amount of time.

Better lighting.  Remember your driver's instruction....don't drive faster than how far you can see.

Better radii on curve.

Better roads overall, including what can and can't be controlled by transportation departments - better pavements; fewer potholes; less debris on the roadways.

In Germany people regularly drive those speeds on the Autobahn without issue.  Why don't we just improve the driver education to their level, and then require everyone to retake training to the new standards by the next time they renew their licence after a five year grace period?

Though realistically, the entire culture surrounding enforcement will have to change.  As long as we remain focused on speed as the cause of all ills on the road and the insurance companies do all the safety studies, it won't happen.

It's not just the drivers' experience. The autobahns are better constructed and better maintained.

You're basing your assumption on that all roads are built alike.

Autobahns are built with higher design speeds in mind, up to about 100 mph in some places, but often aren't much higher than 80 mph in other places.  Thus, things like curve radii are smoother, and sharper curves will have advisory speeds in place.

Cars sold in Germany will have tires enginered for higher speeds.

Many medians will have concrete barriers.  Guard rails and cable barriers run much of the length of right shoulders.

Many vehicles other than cars do have speed limits to obey.

And finally...believe it or not, hundreds of people die every year on the autobahns.  Many thousands more are in accidents!

So clearly it's not just driver education.  And clearly drivers in Germany definitely have issues when driving!

I wouldn't say that the Autobahn has universally higher standards than the interstates.  Take a look here (https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4960254,7.3178935,3a,75y,117.27h,76.15t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSQhawSH173yeNMHp_DCZBA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).  That left shoulder is WAY too narrow, and the way the right shoulder just disappears for the deceleration lane would NEVER be allowed here.  They don't look unusually straight compared to rural interstates, either.

Honestly, I'd be happy if the speed limits on the rural interstates were raised to 75-80 and the urban ones to 65 where roadway geometry isn't substandard, which would be in line with the rest of Europe (even Italy, which has crazy merges from tight ramps like this (https://www.google.com/maps/@44.3674494,8.602948,3a,75y,21.84h,71.35t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sD4LQXTnHuvDLW0TmfxOsbA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) (which honestly reminds me of an old-style NY parkway with a ramp ending in a stop sign!)), but we won't even get that.

Is it that they don't realize, or simply don't care?

In my case, I'm well aware that the bridges ice first, but if there's snow and/or ice, I'm going to be exercising caution anyways, so I've never thought it was a particularly worthwhile thing to point out. It's not going to affect my driving behavior either way, and I'm certainly not going to brake/slow way down for every bridge I encounter.

Prevent speeding unless you want a nice fine. But also kinda dumb imo. Atleast do 106MPH for ticket enforcement.

Which is why the limit on that stretch is only 100 km/h (https://goo.gl/maps/UsnCugiLpy1SnXMS9). Typically, Germany won't do unrestricted unless it's 6+ lanes and modern standards.
