Checking in on my hometown of LEX re: I-64/I-75 widening project.
Are they going to physically widen the freeway or are they just going to restripe it to more narrower lanes so it won't have any ROW impacts? It seems they may at least widen the Newtown Pike bridge. Don't know about the Broadway bridge though. Anybody have any insight on this project?

I am seeing 4 proposed 12 foot travel lanes on the typical section so there is definitely not a narrowing of lanes.
The existing left shoulders on that section of I-64/I-75 are around 16-17 feet, so the proposed inside shoulders are fine at 10 feet.
I'm thinking the Bryan Station, Russell Cave, and Georgetown overpasses may need to be rebuilt to accommodate the new lanes and maintain consistent shoulder widths. Would also be a good opportunity to build wider bridges for all or most of those roads as well. I'm thinking Bryan Station and Georgetown could use additional lanes, and possibly an interchange for Bryan Station.
I know they want to widen Georgetown Road from New Circle Road to Ironworks Pike so they'll have to replace the bridges over the northern split.
I think it would be cool if they added a CD ramp from the northern split to Newtown Pike because so many people get off of that exit and this would help redirect traffic off of I-64 W and I-75 S.

Great project. This section gets iffy during weekends/holidays.

Did you mean 4 feet? Either way looks like the KYTC are going to have to widen to the outside a bit.
^I saw 10 feet when I relooked at the proposed typical section.

They're probably approaching the age where rebuilds would be justified even if no widening was occurring, especially since they weren't rebuilt when the route was originally widened from two to three lanes.
A KY 57 (Bryan Station) interchange is probably not feasible due to the proximity of the southern split. The merge lanes from I-64 west run out pretty close to that bridge.
I just want a dedicated lane from Newtown Pike to Paris Pike.

Drove through tonight, so far they're keeping all six lanes open but both shoulders are closed. Currently they're removing light posts and removing the old jersey barrier.

Yeah that Jersey barrier probably dates back to the early 80's so it could use an upgrade. Maybe they'll do it like in eastern Louisville or I-471, and have a planter between two Jersey walls...
They have shifted lanes onto the new inside median. Now starting the outside part.
Still don't know how they will squeeze a lane under Bryan Station bridge.

The plants in the center of I-471 were all diseased and dying, and I think there is a forthcoming plan to remove all of them.

They've opened up the new pavement, but still 3 lanes as they install what I'm guessing is a sound barrier southbound side. Not sure about NB
Was raining when I wet thru on Friday so I didn't get the best look at the progress, but I can report that southbound was still 3 lanes
