QuoteFebruary 12: Post a junction of a route ending in 5 and a route ending in 7, found in your state.

The former junction of US 395 and OR 37 in Pendleton:

OR 37 was subsequently truncated to its junction with US 30 west of town, and no longer extends to I-84/US 395.

I think it's enough to say they are doing it for political reasons. And I think that sucks.

I talked with someone who's pretty deep in the OSM community and apparently their solution is to put "Gulf of America" under an "official_name" field. Map renderers can decide whether they want to display common names or official names, but most of the ones in actual use tend to use common names. Maps made with OSM data will thus continue to show "Gulf of Mexico" for the foreseeable future.

Quote from: Scott5114This is 100% configurable. Even if Inkscape itself doesn't explicitly allow you to change something in its interface, it actually loads the interface from an editable text file.

I don't know what "library" of user interface elements the Linux version of Inkscape uses, but the Windows version of it copies a lot of application window size labels onto things like tear-away tabs. If I have a panel like "Layers and Objects" or "Text and Font" floating above the document the labels are listed twice in the floating panel. And the top label also lists the document name for some odd reason. I don't need to see that there. I can't collapse the panel into a ribbon size element with only the a label visible. It's either all the way open or removed off the screen.

Adobe has its own library of UI elements for things like floating panels. The Mac and Windows versions of their applications look almost identical, except for some minor differences. The scaling of the elements is easy to adjust in preferences. The panels can be collapsed into a small ribbon looking thing or reduced to an icon. I wouldn't say the UI in apps like Illustrator or Photoshop is perfect, but they do work in a more elegant manner than competing applications.

Quote from: Scott5114 on Today at 12:52:28 AMWhat's particularly loathsome about this move is that it doesn't even follow Google corporate policy.

Quote from: GoogleUnder this policy, the English Google Earth client displays the primary, common, local name(s) given to a body of water by the sovereign nations that border it. [...] When our policy says that we display the "primary, common, local" names for a body of water, each of those three adjectives has an important and distinct meaning. By saying "primary", we aim to include names of dominant use, rather than having to add every conceivable local nickname or variation. By saying "common", we mean to include names which are in widespread daily use, rather than giving immediate recognition to any arbitrary governmental re-naming. In other words, if a ruler announced that henceforth the Pacific Ocean would be named after her mother, we would not add that placemark unless and until the name came into common usage.

Google Maps just fucking SUCKS now.

I would say why I think Google (and soon to be Apple) are doing this, but I'm fairly certain the forum's no politics rule would prevent me from saying it. :pan:

Quote from: MikeTheActuary on February 11, 2025, 10:37:18 PMFor a few years, pre-pandemic, whenever I physically went into a bank (maybe a couple times a year) to get a supply of cash, I'd ask whether they had any $2's available.  No joy.

Try calling ahead, especially if your bank is the type that services a lot of businesses. The head teller is usually able to request $2s be added to their FRB order if they know there's a customer wanting them.

Post-pandemic, I usually had little trouble getting a few $2 bills from one of the larger branches of my urban-area bank. But I don't do that often, usually when I had to spend my "lucky" $2 bill on the road, and wanted to get a replacement when I got back home.

As far as I'm concerned, it will always be the Gulf of Mexico.

Quote from: kkt on February 10, 2025, 10:18:12 PMThe wall calendar I got this year does NOT show new moons, full moons, or the solstices or equinoxes.  I wish it did.

I'm not really sure why the phase of the moon would matter to anyone who isn't a werewolf.

Is it a good night or a bad night to go out and look at the stars.  If there's a moon, it's so bright it overwhelms a lot of the dimmer stars.  But if it's a new moon it'll set soon after sunrise so you'll get some good observing in.

The documentary I'm thinking of would have been released probably in 2010.  I started dating the person I'm thinking of shortly after I got hit by a car on February 5th that year.  She found the documentary a couple months into the relationship and told me I had to see it.
