1994 is the year I've seen for the widening to eight on both Wikipedia and a roadgeek site (not AARoads, FWIW).

Here in Wisconsin, ramp metering is used extensively in the Milwaukee and Waukesha areas, and there are some on the beltline in the Madison area.

This sign on 95 south in White Marsh regarding the Beltway closure past exit 42 (which is separate from the Key Bridge situation) has appeared.

Why did they have to renumber I-70S as I-270? I think that the highway leading to our nation's capital should be 2 digits and I don't see why I-35 should be left as the only suffixed interstate in the country.

I-95 and I-66 say "hi".

One factor might be when I-70S was renumbered to I-270 (1975) Baltimore was larger than Washington population-wise (in 2024 no longer the case).  Also in Frederick heading east, the main line heads to Baltimore; you have to exit off the main line to go to Washington.

Most of the Port of Baltimore sign on 95 south between White Marsh and 695 has been greened out, and now states that all terminals are accessed from I-95.

There are other factors to consider:

- At the time of the renumbering of I-70S to I-270, I-70N still had plans "on the books" to terminate in Baltimore City using the 3-A route planned in 1969, while I-70S was never ever going to go further than its existing interchanges with I-495 since the cancellation of everything inside the Beltway in 1971. Since I-70N/I-70 was theoretically planned to actually reach Baltimore City, it would have made more sense for the 2di to be routed that way.
- At the time of the renumbering, I-70S carried substantially more local and commuter traffic through a much more built-up and heavily settled region of Maryland, while I-70N passed through much more rural parts of Maryland and thus carried mostly long-distance traffic. My understanding is that 3dis were always intended in the early days of the System to provide connectivity for local and commuter traffic, to relieve the 2di of the necessity.
- I-70S replaced a 3dus route, so replacing it in turn with a 3di route wasn't an unreasonable evaluation of the route's importance in the NHS.

There's also an old saying about Maryland governmental priorities: "What Baltimore wants, Baltimore gets." Obviously an oversimplification, but it's not necessarily inaccurate as a generalization.
"You know, you never have a guaranteed spot until you have a spot guaranteed."

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

Obviously. Transportation-wise, we can look at the extraordinarily recent past and see how Hogan ripped the Red Line out from underneath Baltimore just as things were ready to get going, setting the project back years and years. Baltimore gets shat upon by much of the rest of the state, and used as a punching bag when it's convenient.

Mr. Matté

Random observation: it's sorta OCD triggering that some climbing lane end warning signs are posted 2,500 feet from their end and others are 1/2 mile instead of just making things consistent across the state.

I'm always "amused" at the very short climbing lane on I-70 between Hagerstown & Frederick that are so short the sign indicating the lane's end is posted before the striping for the climbing lane even begins:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/jQEgFUrrvFC2RYJB8
(Chose the WB lanes for the example since they're a bit more extreme than the EB counterpart in that immediate vicinity)

I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything

I made the mistake of not using the hill climbing lane on US 1 south of the Conowingo Dam. My tiny little 2.4 L. Toyota 4-cylinder engine wasn't enough to up those hills without having other drivers riding my ass and misusing that lane to pass me.
