Title: Longest State Route You Haven't Been On.
Post by: webny99 on January 17, 2019, 09:54:03 AM
Because we have a thread for interstates, and a thread for US routes, so why not?

What is the longest state route you have never been on?
Firstly in your own state, and then in any other states you may have lived or traveled in.

Wow! I made it further down the list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_routes_in_New_York) than I thought I would.
Thanks to catching a section of NY 22 last August (and the NY 365/NY 26 (#10) multiplex), I now have traveled all of the top ten.
And I have been on NY 7 and NY 104, as well, so the longest I haven't been on, at #13, is NY 32.

I was kind of thinking of the same thing yesterday but never got around to making a post about it, then I see you made this post.

For Michigan, the longest state highway I haven't been on would probably be M-26. It's only 96 miles long.
I'll do a few more states too that I've spent time in but can't be too sure on which highways I have traveled on and which one's I haven't. I know I've never been on M-26 though because I have none of those counties that it goes through clinched. It travels through Ontonagon, Houghton and Keweenaw counties.

For Ohio, I'm going to have to say it's the longest state highway in the state. I have never recalled traveling on SR-7. That highway basically follows the eastern border of the state from near Chesapeake (opposite side of the Ohio River from Huntington, WV) to Conneaut at the very northeastern corner of the state. It ends at SR-531 where SR-531 ends at SR-7 lol.

For Indiana, again the longest state highway in the state wins with SR-62. I love the way Indiana has their numbering system setup, exactly the same way the US highway system is setup. There are some exceptions though with diagonal routes and a few 3 digit highways that act like 2 digit highways.

For Illinois, SR-78. I've been on the longer ones. SR-110, 1 and 9.

In Virginia, VA 94 in southwestern Virginia (26.17 miles, 56th longest). This doesn't include state-maintained secondary routes.

I've covered everything in AK, HI, MD, DE, and DC. I don't feel like repeating this exercise for all the remaining 45 states, though my longest completely untraveled state route anywhere might be AR 9 (230.12 miles in two segments).

MN 92, 72.5 miles. I've crossed it though.

(For those who may fact check my TM, it shows MN 40 as being a longer unused one, but I have been on that route albeit not significantly enough to record)

I've driven every mile of state highway in my in state and several others, but I'm working to clinch CA and NV right now. In those states:

CA 49 (4th longest)
NV 278 (7th longest)

CO: SH 71 (#2 at 224.65 miles)

It's a N/S highway out on the Eastern Plains, and I'm usually going east/west (or southwest) when I'm out that way.

Where I have lived:

CA (where I grew up): SR 299 (#3 at 305.78 miles)

E/W in NoCal, I grew up in SoCal, and I've only been on I-5 that far north.

OR (where I lived for two years):  SR 140 (#1 at 237.01 miles)

Yeah, I usually stayed close to Portland in those days (didn't have a car for much of that time)

For Iowa, IA 78 is it, although my experience with IA 10 consists only of driving its old overlap with IA 60 in Alton.

As for other states I lived in, I assume it's MN 1 for Minnesota, IL 9 for Illinois and NE 61 for Nebraska.

EDIT: I forgot IL 9 overlaps US 24 SW of Peoria and it also overlaps IL 47 in Gibson City, so it's IL 37.

PA 208 (27th longest in PA)

Longest in states I have been in has to be CA 1 at 659 mi.  Longest on the east coast is probably NY 3 at 245 mi.

Here in New York, it looks like New York 37's my winner.  It's the 18th-longest in the state, at around 125 miles.  I've passed by its northern/eastern end in Malone.

Illinois 16 (9th longest)
M-25 (7th longest)

Title: Re: Longest State Route You Haven't Been On.
Post by: US 89 on January 17, 2019, 01:52:31 PM
Depends on how you count it -- UT 30 is my answer if you count the implied concurrencies on I-84/15 and US 89. I've never used a non-independent part of 30, but I've clinched both implied connections. If the connections don't count, my answer is UT 95.

30 is the longest state route in Utah (second-longest if the implied concurrencies don't count) and 95 is fourth-longest.

As for other states, my travels there tend to be focused on Interstates and US Highways, and if I pick up a random state route concurrency, great. I do try to make an effort to use freeway exits with route designations when I have to stop, though. But for the two other states where I have over 10% of mileage clinched:

Idaho: ID 75, the longest route. (Unless I went to Sun Valley as a baby, in which case it's ID 28, the 4th-longest.)
Colorado: CO 14, the longest -- I've crossed it at I-25 and passed the west end at US 40, but never turned onto it. The longest route I have used in CO is CO 141 in Grand Junction.

For me, in NY it's NY 430, unless you count turning around at the diamond interchange off I-86 exit 10 as traveling on NY 430.  If you do, it's NY 34B.

CT:  CT 39 at 22.76 miles.  I've seen both ends of it, but I've never driven on it.

Other states I've traveled through significant parts of:

MA: I've never driven on MA 28 (151.74 mi).  However, I've been a passenger on it, and I've driven part of NH 28.  So the true longest I've never been on any part of (including silent concurrencies) is MA 27 at 73.44 mi (crossed it on US 1)

RI: RI 114 at 45.7 mi.  Crossed it in several spots
VT: VT 14 at 108.946 miles
NH: NH 107 at 69.108 miles
ME: Would be ME 9 at 289.09 mi, but I've been on VT and NH 9.  For non MSR's, ME 6 at 207.23 mi
NY: NY 30 at 300.71 mi.  Crossed it on the Thruway and on US 20, but never drove on it
NJ: NJ 35 at 58.11 mi.  Crossed it on the parkway and US 1-9, but never drove on it.
PA: PA 18 at 209 mi (never been to western PA)
DE: DE 9 at 58.18 mi  Crossed it on DE 1, I-295, I-495, and I-95/US 202
MD: MD 5 at 74.34 mi.  Never been to southern MD

I'm pretty sure I've never been on VA 42, which I need to change. (The only longer state routes are VA 40, which I have driven about half of, and the unsigned VA 48, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive, which I have been on.) I may or may not have been on NC 24 in Charlotte once, I'm almost certain I've been on NC 87 before, and I definitely have been on NC 150, but I'm drawing a blank on other very long NC routes.

States I've lived in

Kansas:  K-9, second longest in the state at 318 miles.

Illinois (ignoring IL-110 because that isn't a real highway and I haven't been in Illinois since it was commissioned):  IL-116, seventh longest in the state at 176 miles.

CA 266 at 12 miles.  CA 266 is one of the few remaining state highways I've never driven at all.  I drove all of them in Arizona at least in some capacity.  I'd have to sit down and really think about Florida given the hundreds of State Roads, even some of the obscure ones can be somewhat lengthy.

Alabama: 51 (25th longest)

Florida: 776 (98th longest)

I have a decent amount of mileage in the next two states, though I haven't lived there...

Mississippi: 57 (roughly 95 miles long, about 30th on the list)

Georgia: GA 540 (18th longest) - I haven't driven in Georgia since the Fall Line Freeway was dedicated in late-2018, so GA 122 is next down the list at 51st.

Texas:  TX-6, second longest in the state at 476 miles.  I've crossed over it or under it on another highway plenty of times but never deviated onto it.

States I've lived in

Georgia: GA 23, the 11th longest at 240 miles. Given its north-south routing through east and southeast Georgia from Augusta to the Jacksonville, FL area, it's very unlikely that I'd have reason to use it other than for the express purpose of doing so (this also applies to US 301, which it mostly follows).

Maryland: MD 313, the 2nd longest at 75.7 miles. My travels on the Eastern Shore were almost exclusively on US 50.

Other notable states (where I've covered at least 10% of available mileage according to Travel Mapping)

Florida: FL 15, the 8th longest at 324 miles. Not only the signed portion; I haven't been on any of the unsigned parts either.

Virginia: VA 40, the longest at 225 miles. It's long, but doesn't really connect any population centers. I've crossed it on US 29, I-85, and I-95.

Hawaii: HI 11, the longest at 122 miles. Not a very interesting finding since I haven't driven on any island other than Oahu. Limiting it to that island, the answer becomes HI 750, the island's 7th longest at about 8.2 miles.

In CA, the only state highways I haven't traveled on are 186 and 188, the short border connectors; did 266 "way back when".  Oh -- 207 was established long after the last time I was up at Bear Valley, so I may have driven the actual road at some point in the '60's or '70's, but not as a state route.  Otherwise, I've driven on at least a portion of the remainder at some point.

I'd guess that the longest state highway anywhere that I've not driven on -- and this is sort of pushing it -- is the MSR route of IL 9, IN 26, and OH 119 -- or possibly MI 28.  I'd like to say MSR 200 (really have had little opportunity there) but I have driven it coincidentally with US 89 and I-90 in MT.  Almost used it between US 93 and US 95 several years ago (to check out the parallel MRL rail line), but a very serious storm came up and I just stayed on I-90 over to Spokane.

I've covered over 98% of the CA state route system, including everything outside of the coastal counties from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles. The longest route I haven't touched is CA 27, at about 18 miles. Others completely untraveled are CA 34, CA 107, CA 187, CA 213, CA 229, CA 232, and the CA 1 business route in Cambria.

I have to go far down the list of OK routes to find one that I haven't touched, but that's because I've both traveled a lot in the state, and Oklahoma is unusually prone to concurrencies for whatever reason. Just about every route will piggyback on another to jump over a few miles at some point.

In Virginia, I think it's VA-57, which is 86.45 miles long and is a road I wouldn't really have any reason to use nor much opportunity to drive. Last time I was down that way was our Christmas 2016 trip to Primland and I opted for the US highways instead because I had some gaps there that were a higher priority, plus it was more important to get down there in ample time ahead of dinner because we had to have our luggage transferred to a 4WD vehicle to reach the tree house we'd booked.

For other states, I have no clue. Too much trouble to try to figure it out. I assume it would likely be something in Texas, but who knows because I don't know how Texas's state routes compare to Alaska's for length and I don't care enough to try to find out.

Short answer is that both Texas and Alaska have individual state routes topping out around 550 miles. But Texas has more long routes, as well as overall state route mileage.

Other states have individual state routes that are even longer, for example CA 1 and MT 200 each over 700 miles (some Great Plains and Mountain states might have their own contenders).

Every route on this list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_state_highways_in_the_United_States). The absolute winner is MT 200.

Taking "state" as meaning "subnational division", then the longest Aragon (Spain) regional route I haven't been yet is A-226 (also the longest regional route here) at about 97 miles. It is split into two sections due to its route dipping into the Valencian Community. I've been past both termini of it, though.

Since my 2019 post, my answer for New York changed, and is now NY 19, at 108 miles, the 22nd longest state route.

For other states where I've lived or spent the most time:

Massachusetts: MA 27, 71 miles and 7th longest.
Florida: FL 77, 64 miles, 19th longest (counting the three longest A1A segments as separate routes).
New Mexico: I have not traveled the 4 longest routes at all, starting with NM 120 at 117 miles.

But later on it was determined CA 1 is actually longer (including its US 101 concurrencies, formally not part of that route), so that is my true answer by default. For any regional routes in Aragon the answer remains unchanged.

I've since been on M-26 in Michigan when I finished up clinching the rest of the counties in the state and also the same for OH-7 so I'm not sure about Ohio anymore but Michigan's would now be M-69 as I don't think I've ever been on that highway although I have driven past it's western terminus in Crystal Falls but never been on it.

Almost every aspect of this answer has changed over the past 2.5 years. As far as Utah goes, I've now clinched SR 30 and 95, so the longest Utah state route I've never been on is now 276. I've also now driven Colorado's SH 14 west of Walden, leaving SH 71 as the longest route I have zero mileage on in that state. Idaho is still the same.

I do now have four more states where I've clinched over 10% of the state highway mileage. Those states and my longest untraveled routes in them are:

- Wyoming: WYO 59
- Georgia: SR 38
- Nevada: SR 318 (yes, the longest route - my travels here remain very heavily US and Interstate focused. longest route I have been on would be 233)
- New Mexico: NM 120 (see Nevada above - longest I have been on here is NM 456)

The entire chain of Route 200s (Washington/Idaho/Montana/North Dakota/Minnesota)

I have been on MD 2, the longest in my state at 79.24 miles, all the way from its south end in Solomons to MD 10 in Pasadena, as well as two blocks of it on St. Paul Street between Mount Royal Avenue (at the ramp from I-83) and Biddle Street in Baltimore. MD 355 is my longest non-traveled Maryland route at 36.94 miles.

For the states that I have either lived in, or have significant driving mileage in:

Maryland:  MD 12 (about 30 miles) - one on my planned road trips will get some (if not all) of it.
Pennsylvania:  PA 18 (about 200 miles; longest in the state)
Florida:  FL 50 (about 120 miles; not sure how I missed it while I was there)
Virginia:  VA 40 (about 225 miles)
Delaware:  DE 30 (about 45 miles)
Washington DC:  None   :bigass:

For all states, I'm sure it would be MT 200.

In my state (Illinois), the longest state road that I've been on is Illinois Route 16.

If we're talking all of the state roads, I haven't been on Montana Route 200, which is apparently the longest numbered state road in the country. If we're counting state roads in different states which share a number and connect to each other, I'm gonna clinch it in a couple weeks, but if not, I'm not going to Montana anytime soon to do it.

I've driven through an intersection with WI-80. I was on WI-80's pavement, I'm counting it.

So then it's WI-81, which is 124 miles long, the 24th longest state trunkline.

It's not WI-81, I've been on the Monroe bypass.

Final answer is the 81.5-mile WI-40, the 33rd longest.

VA-40 for me, the longest route in the state. It's sort of long but not ridiculously so--my state is not known for its long state routes. With no huge towns along the route and no major concurrencies, I've had no reason to travel it.

What is the longest state route you have never been on?
Firstly in your own state, and then in any other states you may have lived or traveled in.

Wow! I made it further down the list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_routes_in_New_York) than I thought I would.
Thanks to catching a section of NY 22 last August (and the NY 365/NY 26 multiplex), I now have traveled all of the top ten.
And I have been on NY 7 and NY 104, as well, so the longest I haven't been on, at #13, is NY 32.

I didn't even remember starting this thread, but anyways, my answer is unchanged in the last 3+ years. I still haven't been on NY 32, although I have now crossed it at-grade on NY 23A, so I can at least say I've seen it. I also picked up quite a bit of non-concurrent mileage on NY 26 for the first time this past weekend.

I did a quick TM check of every state west of the Mississippi, and some of the larger states in the eastern U.S. My longest completely untraveled state route is probably Washington 26 (about 134 miles long).

Arkansas 9 no longer tops my list. Since my previous post, I've traveled part of the longer AR 9 segment, and the shorter one is only about 52 miles long.

Taking this into Canadian provinces and territories, my longest completely untraveled route up there is Quebec 167, about 341 miles long. Nobody else on TM has traveled any of that remote northern Quebec route, either.

I lived in Michigan but have never been on MI-28, the longest highway in the state (goes east-west across the Upper Peninsula).

As regards other states I've lived in:

Ohio - don't know for certain.
Colorado - CO-149, 8th longest in the state, it's a lightly traveled highway deep in the Rockies.
Pennsylvania - PA-44, 3rd longest in the state, lightly traveled highway in the north-central PA forests.
California - CA-299, 3rd longest in the state, east-west highway that transverses far northern California.

Now some of us are dying to know...

I initially didn't bother to find the answer because I figured it'd be tedious, but I forgot that Travel Mapping is quite good at distilling answers to this sort of question.

I apparently have not touched OK-30 at all, the 35th-longest route. It is both far away from me (paralleling the western OK-TX line just a few miles in) and unusually devoid of concurrencies (its only concurrencies are with Biz I-40 in Erick, a route type I usually only bother with if I'm really bored, and OK-47, a route which I have traveled so little on that it shows as zero on TM).

Maybe on my trip to Nevada next month I'll hit it up for a few miles on my way out.

With all of the concurrencies and disconnected segments of state routes in Arkansas, this was somewhat of a nightmare to figure out, but I finally got one I have never dropped a tire on despite living in the state all of my life and travelling much of it.

Now there's likely no easy way to figure out where it ranks in terms of longest state routes.  At least not one I could be bothered with at this point.  According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_Highway_13), it has 3 segments of 54.58, 9.90, and 6.13 miles.

MN: MN 102 - 19.3 miles
ND: ND 22 - 156 miles

I have since clinched MN 102, but I forgot that I hadn't (and still haven't) ever driven on MN 169, which is 48.9 miles long.

The longest highway in North Dakota that I haven't driven on is now ND 50, at 100.2 miles long.

Wisconsin: WI 33, 200.8 miles.

Updating after a few years...

Maryland:  MD 224 (about 27 miles)
Delaware:  DE 24 (about 41 miles)   (DE 30 was truncated in 2022)

For Washington, the answer is none. I have been on a section of the four remaining unclinched routes I have left.

For Oregon, it's US 95 (123 miles) or OR 74 (82 miles). For BC, it's Highway 16 (664 miles).

New Jersey I've been on a good part of Route 47, but need it where NJ 347 and NJ 55 bypass it. That is the states's longest state route designation.

In Louisiana to try La 1 would be a feat.  Been on it from Baton Rouge down to La Fourche Parish at La 24 so far.

OK SH 3 would be a great feat to do as well as all of TX SH 6.

New York has NY 5 in which I've been on parts, which is the longest in that state.

NY 17 and NY 22 are two more of the longest ( don't know which is longer) but only drove parts of them.

Need all three in the Empire State.

For me, it would be VA 48, which is the longest in VA

The longest one I have been on in VA is VA 42 (3rd longest), from Bland to New Castle (yes I know, they're technically two different segments), and the longest one clinched is VA 100 (which is ~27th, and I'm surprised 311 isn't longer but I digress)

Now for each state I've visited (most of these will probably be near the if not the top of the list in their respective states):

Haven't been on (longest)
FL: FL 5
GA: GA 11
KY: KY 7
MA: MA 28
MD: MD 2
ME: ME 11
NC: NC 24
PA: PA 18
SC: SC 9

Haven't been on (2nd place)
CT: CT 8
NJ: NJ 47
NY: NY 5
OH: OH 3
TN: TN 15
VT: VT 30

Haven't been on (3rd longest)
NH: NH 9

Haven't been on (5th longest)
WV: WV 28

It's been five years since I posted here, so I'll check in with some new states:

Florida: SR 30 (11th-longest). Longest standalone: SR 70 (second-longest of those that aren't hidden designations for Interstates or US Routes)
Illinois: IL 127 (12th-longest)
Indiana: SR 9 (5th-longest, for now)
Iowa: IA 9 (2nd-longest)
Michigan: M-25 (7th-longest)
Wisconsin: WIS 27 (5th-longest)

As far as I know, I haven't been on the longest route of any other states, unless there's an overlap I'm not aware of.
