I’m currently in the planning stages of taking a road trip through this region from August 26 to September 4. From my home in Massachusetts, I will be taking the I-78, I-81, I-26 route to get to Asheville with an overnight stop in Allentown, PA. I will spend a few days in the Smokies and spend time in Asheville. I also plan to visit the high points of Mt. Mitchell in NC and Clingman’s Dome in TN. I will be using the I-40/US 19/US 441 route to reach the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area.
Next, I would drive down to Chattanooga and probably overnight there. I plan to visit Ruby Falls and do the Lookout Falls Incline Railway. Following that, I will drive down to Birmingham and spend time there and then making my way towards Atlanta, with another overnight there. Following that, I will take I-85/I-95 to get back to Massachusetts.
This trip would mean that I will have visited every state in the East Coast. Most of these states other than North Carolina will be new to me.
I’m open for suggestions that anyone may have in regards to route clinching, other attractions I might’ve missed, etc.
