Car Colors

I've gotten over all this Camry/Accord talk and figured something different would be topical; what car colors have you owned?...what are your preferences?  For me the cars I've owned have had the following primary colors:

Red:  X3
Purple:  X1
White:  X3
Green:  X1
Orange:  X1

Personally while I'm more into abstract colors like; purple, orange and green I've found that maintenance of daily drivers is easier in something more generic.  I tend to really like white because it hides dirt and paint defects fairly easy but somehow (usually because the dealer has the exact model I want) a lot of daily cars end up red.  Really I've found red to be a pain in the ass to keep clean in dirty/dusty environment and tends to fade easily in the sun.  My least favorite car colors are black and silver.  Silver seems like something a 1990s soccer mom would buy and black is more for the guy who thinks he's in a Fast & the Furious movie.  I've found silver easy to maintain and look clean whereas black is the most difficult of all colors.

I almost think we need a separate board dedicated to cars. After all, we need them to drive all the roads we talk about.

Anyway, I just don't like black, even more so if it's the interior.. and then there's BMW. Their new Vantablack makes it so you can barely see the car itself, so there's no point in having any sort of side-moldings or anything else that makes the car look nice. Just the lights and the TWO big honking grills. Forget to turn on your lights on that thing and you risk a crash at night.

On the outside my favorites would be green, blue, and a darkish red. For the inside I would take a beige or brown any day. My first/current car is a grayish-green on the outside while the inside is.. BLACK, with cloth seats.

That's a very good idea. Maybe we can ask the admins to make a board about cars and we can move this thread, the Camry and Accord (and more car threads) on that board too!

My current cars are:

The blue one would've been silver, except the co-worker who talked me into getting a Prius drove a silver Prius, and I wanted to avoid confusion with her car in the same office garage.

Others:

Gold - 1
Brown - 1
Red - 1
Aqua - 1
Green - 1 (co-owned with my sisters, they chose the color)
White - 1

I didn't keep the last six for long. The first three "others" each lasted more than 100K miles. My current 2008 blue Prius is over 310K miles, while my current 2018 silver Subaru is over 52K miles (just getting started). So all my longest-lasting cars were boring silver or blue.

Yes. I don't have a car yet, but I will tell you what color it is when I get it.

From older to newer:

Red  (not my first choice - but it was on the lot)
Raspberry/Black two-tone   (That's what the color was called!  Not exactly purple, maroon, nor red.  Roof was black, rest of the car raspberry.)
Green  (blue would have been my choice, but that model was not available in blue)
Black  (Current.  Wanted blue, but they were in high demand and the dealer was unable to work out a swap with another dealer.  Black was 2nd choice and acceptable.)

The Raspberry/Black was IMHO the sharpest looking of the bunch.

Monochromatic seems popular around here. No idea why, other than potentially better resale value.

When in the market a year ago for my current car, I was amazed how hard it was to find cars of interest to me in anyone's used stock that were anything other than white, silver/gray, or black.

Over the years, I have owned about every color, excepting only yellow, gold, and purple.  I buy cars off the lot based on the features I want, color is never a determining factor.

The one exception was when I bought my then-new '97 Crown Vic.  Since it was a factory-order, most models w/the Handling/Performance Package (aka HPP) had the digital dash which I didn't want; I was able to choose the exterior/interior combination I wanted.  Such remains the only time I did such.

The only time I turned down a car due to its color, specifically the durability of said-color, was when I was looking for a replacement for the above-'97 Vic. (it was totaled in a 3-car accident over 3 years ago).  There was a white 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis for sale; however, and anyone who has ever owned any Ford Motor Company vehicle painted in Performance White knows this, the paint was already flaking off.  I decided to pass thinking I can find a similar-conditioned car in a more durable color.  Such was accomplished when I purchased my current black 2011 Crown Vic.

I like silver the best, but I bought gray last time because I think my current car looks better in gray than in silver.

I had a 1998 VW Jetta GLX that was "silver arrow" and that was the best color ever.  I used to get a lot of compliments on that color but silver wasn't very common back then.

Interestingly I noticed my last two GM cars had significant paint issues.  My recent 2014 Sonic was a daily driver and had Crystal Red Tintcoat.  The paint on the roof started getting flaky despite waxing it every other month.  I noticed that there was serious color matching issues on the bumpers which were corrected when a trucker ramp into a my back bumper and a deer committed suicide on my front.  My Inferno Orange 2010 Camaro had major overspray issues on pretty every panel edge which would peel.  The trunk lid in particular had really bad overspray which I had to keep using touch up paint on.  One of the panels had some sand underneath the clear coat as well.  Interestingly I found one of the best paints that held up well being outside in Phoenix constantly was Green Orchid Metallic on 2012 Ford Fiesta daily.

My first car, a 1977 Ford Granada, was a flat grey when I bought it, but I got it painted white a year or so later. The car lacked AC, so white was a good choice.

When I bought my current TL as a new car, I actually wanted red (Redondo Red Pearl, to use Acura's term). But the dealer didn't have a six-speed in stock and the first one they got in stock was black, so I bought that because I was without a car at the time (my Accord having been declared a total loss by insurance after I got rear-ended the previous week). While black looks good when it's nice and clean, it's a pain to keep it clean and it really shows the dirt. I do not plan to get another black car, but who knows what the situation might be next time.

So color has never mattered to me.

I will say, however, that silver cars almost never look dirty.

I may have the most boring answer of them all here:

- white (given to me by a family member)
- black (the only one I've bought myself)

I actually wanted my current one to be a sort of bluish-gray color, but the dealer didn't have that one and I was an impatient 22-year-old so I went ahead and took the black one. Clearly I got over it because I still have it 10 years later.
