Title: Longest Interstate You Haven't Been On
Post by: adwerkema on September 15, 2018, 11:17:39 AM
I was curious what mine was. Looked it up, and found out it was I-25. Odd, considering I've been through all three states I-25 is in.

What's yours?

It goes diagonally across the largest region of the country I have not been in.

Longest ones I haven't been on include I-16, I-19, I-27, I-78, & I-82, & the eastern I-84.  Of these, The eastern I-84 is the longest.

Edited: Travel Mapping tells me I was on a 7-mile piece of I-94 on a hotel shuttle to O'Hare back in 2003. Didn't realize that. So it's I-15 instead for me.

Assuming we're talking about CONUS interstates: Western I-84

Others I'm lacking: I-49 (post-designation), I-8, western I-86, I-17, I-19, I-2, I-11, southern I-87 (post-designation)....and all of the AK/HI/PR Interstates.

I-80 is the second longest Interstate, but I haven't been on it at all.

Sort of a yes, but.... question; I've been on quite a few current Interstates (I-22, the east I-86, I-41) before they were designated as Interstates -- but they were still full freeways, some of which were actually Interstate-grade.  If that's the case, then I'd have to say the east I-86, since the last time I was on it its continuous mileage extended just east of Corning; the Horseheads section was still U.C. at that time (2003).  The future I-22's a close second; my last visit there (2002) it was full freeway (albeit substandard in much of MS) to Winfield (AL 129).
The only part of the future I-41 I've been on is the part multiplexed with I-94; I'm arbitrarily not going to count that at all.

That would make the longest Interstate I've never been on (crossed it a couple of times in San Antonio) I-37.  Just never really had the need or opportunity to utilize it.

I-22. I was never on it even when it was US 78. Others are I-2, I-14, I-16, I-27, I-73, I-82, and I-88 west (though I've crossed it countless times between St Louis and Wisconsin).

99% certain it's I-64.

Forgot about the duplex with US 61 outside STL, so it's not 64. I-8 jumps to mind as the next contender, which amusingly I've passed its eastern terminus and been to San Diego.

It's the western 84, which I probably didn't think much about because I've clinched its eastern counterpart.

I-35, I believe.  Looks about the same length as I-95, so it is long.

I have been on all the I-x5 except I-15, I-25 and I-35.
I have been on all the I-x0.
I have been on the three long ones that don't end in 0 or 5 -- I-81 and I-64 and I-94.

It would be I-15 for me, if not for the half-mile (one exit) I was on it in Downtown Salt Lake City.

Western I-84 I've been on for 5 miles (its westernmost 5 miles, in fact).

That leaves I-29 as the longest Interstate I can't even fudge having been on.

If we count the whole system, including the Puerto Rico interstates, mine's I-PR2 at 145+ miles.

If we count all 2dis and 3dis in the 50 states, it's I-135 in Kansas at about 97 miles (though I've passed by both ends).

If we count only 2dis, it's the western I-86 at about 63 miles (though I've passed by one end).

If we pretend that eastern I-86 counts as traveling on western I-86, it's I-14 at about 25 miles.

This thread made me realize that the 3 longest 50 states interstate routes I've not traveled are 3dis (I-840 and California's I-680 being the ones in addition to I-135 mentioned above).

Longest interstate for me is I-94, though I've traveled all of the major (x0 and x5) routes.

As for US Highways, I've traveled on the top 22 routes, which makes US 11 the longest I've never done.

It might have been different back in the day (I was a kid), before an expansion of that area, if the Atlanta detail map is accurate: http://www.dot.ga.gov/DriveSmart/MapsData/Documents/HwyAndTransportationMaps/1975_1976.pdf. If not, then I-85 takes the top spot.

Longest I've never been on is I-40.  Only N-S primaries I've been on are I-65 (brief portion paired with I-70 as a passenger), I-75 (very briefly in the Tampa area), and I-95 (most of it north of I-4 and south of Waterville, ME with most of it driven between the DC Beltway and Mass Pike, and from 495 through NH).  Only E-W primaries I've been on are I-10 (New Orleans Airport to I-110 in Biloxi except for most of the portion bypassed by I-610, all driven); I-70 ( Indy airport to downtown as a passenger, and from I-81 to the Park & Ride driving); I-80 (PA 33- I-287, and GSP to I-95 all driving); and I-90 (US 219 to I-88 passenger only, I-88 to I-93 driving).

Adding in US highways, mine appears to be US 68 at about 550 miles.

TM users, if you're looking for answers to these based on what you have in the system, I can run manual DB queries.  Some day I will add or someone will contribute some front-end code to show answers to these kinds of questions on site.

I-59 by a long shot.

got a whole bunch of segmented route sections which fall into distant laps behind.  The only non-segmented routes are 2, 14 and 97.

Amusingly, I live in the northern part of the lower 48, but I have more of I-10 and I-40 than I have of I-80. (nearly all of what I lack on I-80 is between Cheyenne and Reno (save the portion around Salt Lake City).

Living in SoCal for a short duration and having a parent in AZ (until last year) also helped get me the western portions of I-10 and I-40 along with I-70.

Looking at US routes...I think I may have traveled on at least a few blocks of US 20 on one of my visits to Boston, but I'm not sure. If I have, then the longest one I haven't been on would be US 12. I've also only been on US 6 thanks to it hopping on Interstates in Providence and Hartford.

Between travel, duty stations, and Navy trips, I've been on most.  Thus, the longest Interstate I haven't touched yet is the western I-76.  I've been on every original north-south 1/2-digit route save I-17 and I-19.

Since US routes are now mentioned, US 95 would be my longest untouched of that category...

Not sure about U.S. highways, though, as I am sure I have ridden on many of them on local jaunts in cities I have visited, and just not paid attention.  U.S. 62 may be the longest one I have not been on.

The top ten longest interstates are:

1. => I-90 (check)

2. => I-80 (check)

3. => I-40 (check)

4. => I-10 (check)

5. => I-70 (check)

6. => I-95 (check)

7. => I-75 (check)

8. => I-94 (check)

9. => I-35 (X)

10. => I-20 (check)

I pinpointed which of these interstates I have been on, and which ones I haven't been on. I have been on all of the top-ten longest interstates except I-35. This makes I-35 the longest interstate I have not been on in real life. Although, when I went to the DFW Metro Area in July 2015, I did cross over I-35 two times. I crossed over I-35E in Dallas, and I crossed over I-35W in Fort Worth. I never actually went on Interstate 35, though.

If you went to downtown SLC, you probably took both I-80 and I-15.

Actually, probably not I-15. The fastest way from the SLC airport to the convention center is almost certainly the 600 and 500 South ramps directly from I-80; that movement does not involve I-15. That interchange was reconfigured around 2000, but I’m fairly sure the actual 15/80 merge point was still beyond the downtown viaducts.

Though unlikely, there's a chance that your taxi took North Temple into the city, which doesn't use any freeways. If you remember taking a freeway, it was almost certainly I-80.

I-11 and I-22 are the only 2dis in the continental US I have never been on any segment of. So I-22 is the answer.

As for US highways, there are a total of 25 of those I have not been on (excluding directional suffixed splits). US 550, at 298.36 miles (per TravelMapping data), is the longest.

If you drive I-35E or W, seeing their reassurance assemblies, but never have driven I-35 and seen its reassurance assemblies, then (my opinion) you haven't driven any of I-35.

This what Wikipedia says on article Interstate 35E (Texas) --

Interstate 35E (I-35E), an Interstate Highway, is the eastern half of I-35 where it splits to serve the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area. I-35 splits into two branch routes, I-35W and I-35E at Hillsboro.  I-35E travels northward for 97 miles (156 km), maintaining I-35's sequence of exit numbers.

What's yours?

I believe that I have been on (or at crossed at right angles) all of the interstates that are over about 1000 km. Some of this was before they were designated as interstates or fully constructed. Most of my coast-to-coast driving travel occurred in 1975. I could be missing I-20 or I-30, but I believe that I crossed it at right angles in 2015.

But what if you drove on I-35E in Dallas?  Does I-35 even conceptually not exist in the DFW area?

To take this a step further: if you count directional splits as separate routes, is the unsuffixed version all one route or are there two routes with the same number on either side of the directional split?

This makes no difference in my case for interstates but it does for US routes - US 45 south of where it splits into US 45W and US 45E is longer than US 550, and I have never been on any of it down there. So if we consider this to be a separate "southern US 45" (much as there are two separate routes numbered I-76, 84, 86, 87, and 88), that would then take on the title of longest US route I have never been on.

This is why I deliberately specified "excluding directional splits". For the purpose of this exercise it is more straightforward if US 45, 45W, and 45E all count as "US 45", and I would say that is fair in general.

The one exception I might make is US 9W... since there is no corresponding 9E. US 9 has a single distinct path and US 9W has a different path, thus making it a distinct US route of its own.
(trivia: there was a US 9W/9E pair on either side of the Hudson from 1926 to 1930, after that 9E became plain 9)

I haven't been on I-5, I-15, or I-25. I was surprised to learn, however, that I-20 is actually longer than all of the aforementioned I-X5's, so I guess it takes the cake in my case.
Other than that, I have been on every I-X0 except I-30, which is fairly short and therefore not really a contender. I have never been on I-65 or I-85, either, but those are considerably shorter than their counterparts out west.

Discussion of I-35/I-35E/I-35W seems to be a theme here... so I might as well add that, yes, I have been on I-35 (no suffix) and both I-35W and I-35E in the Twin Cities area - multiple times.  :-P

In 45's case, it appears W continues the mileposts from mainline 45 while E is a separate route.

Everybody has their own rules, which is fine, but it's clear that one branch is intended to be the spiritual successor while the other one is otherwise entirely a separate route. When I clinched I-35, I made it a point to take 35E through DFW, and would not have considered 35 clinched if I had taken 35W instead.

Tennessee is special, because the US routes have hidden state routes, and the mileposts are for the state routes. Also, in Tennessee, mileposts on non-interstates reset at county lines.

For me, I consider them discontinuous routes if they have a suffixed pair in the middle, and those suffixed pairs are two separate routes. Say you're driving US 31 south out of Michigan and Indiana, and you get to their split in Louisville. (Which is a bit complicated, because there are a bunch of one-way streets carrying the two split routes.) It does not matter if you take 31E, 31-Dub by the infamous little green shrub, or get on I-65, to get to Nashville. If you pick up US 31 at the point where the routes rejoin and follow 31 all the way to its terminus, it has been clinched or traveled on.

If you have traveled only on US 31E or US 31W, you have not traveled on US 31. (And I realize we're talking about Interstates in this thread, and there's a specific mention made of the I-35 situation, but someone mentioned the US routes.)

Not to give yet another opinion, but I consider only one I-35 to exist, and it comprises both the W and E branches. So, I wouldn't consider I-35 to be clinched unless I had driven both the W and the E in both Texas and Minnesota.

That is probably how my views lie on the suffixed I-35 thing. In criteria for me personally clinching I-35, I would either require that I took at least one suffix and clinch it (such as driving all of both I-35Ws or all of both I-35Es), or all of both. For the clinching part, I would probably do the former.

When considering the longest interstate that I have not intersected, for me that would have to be I-5. I have been to the San Francisco area, in December 2017/January 2018, but we flew in, and we never went far enough east to cross over (or under) Interstate 5 in person on the road. I-5 is the 12th longest interstate, which is three places down from I-35 (the 9th longest interstate) - the longest interstate that I personally have not been on.

Unless I am forced to consider that very short 0.9 mile* sliver of concurrency with I-40 in Oklahoma City I would have to say I-35 is the longest I haven't truly been on.

*Measured from the merge point of I-35 NB into I-40 EB to the gore of the 35/40 split. With I-40 being the left split if I had stayed in the left 2 lanes the entire distance would I ever have been on I-35 to begin with?

For me, the longest not intersected is I-44, although the western I-84 is debatable. I crossed a lot of the longer ones from my cross-country Amtrak trip in 2011.

Despite having much less mileage on US routes, the longest I haven't been on is US 60, which is the 5th longest (I-80, which I haven't been on, is the 2nd longest Interstate).

The longest US route I haven't crossed is US 82, unless you count flying over airspace.

I think my answer has to be Western I-84. Portland to (outside) Salt Lake City is a bit of distance, and have never traveled to that part of the country, other than changing planes in SLC a couple times. I have not been on the Eastern I-84 either, but it does not look quite as long

For the routes over 800 miles:

Longest interstates never been on as a passenger or a driver: I-35, I-25

Longest interstates never been on as a driver, but definitely been on as a passenger: I-40, I-75

Longest interstates where I was definitely on as a passenger, but unsure if I've ever driven: I-55 [definitely rode it to Midway Airport, not sure if I drove it when I drove to Chicago on a trip 14 years ago.  Not been near other parts of the highway.]

Longest interstates where I was definitely not the driver but unsure if I was a passenger:  I-20 [been to Atlanta as only a passenger, but don't recall if we took this road for any reason],

As I have lived in SoCal, NorCal, NYC, and now MD I have driven I-80, I-10, I-70, I-95, I-15,and I-5 numerous times.

I do recall driving the other long interstates at least once.

I’ve gone through and counted all the 2DI responses in this thread that were marked as at least probable, and not distinguishing between western and eastern routes or W and E suffixes, here’s what I get:

As you can see, I-90 is both the longest interstate as well as the one most likely to be untraveled. There is also a general trend of decreasing length, although that does not seem to translate across the even and odd interstates.

Route Count Length
I-90 10 3020
I-10 9 2460
I-20 9 1539
I-84 9 1002
I-35 8 1696
I-15 5 1434
I-25 5 1062
I-80 4 2900
I-40 4 2557
I-94 4 1585
I-5 4 1381
I-81 3 855
I-29 3 756
I-76 3 622
I-22 3 202
I-95 2 1919
I-75 2 1786
I-85 2 666
I-59 2 445
I-8 2 348
I-45 2 285
I-49 1 528
I-30 1 367
I-86 1 286
I-88 1 258
I-72 1 179
I-37 1 143

You know after thinking about what interstates I have not traveled I just noticed that I have been on part of all the major long ones.  I-5, I-15, I-25, I-35 etc.  and then I-10, I-20, I-40, I-70, I-80, I-90, and I-94 also.

I-8 I have not been on, but I do not think the OP considers that to be a longest interstate.

What's yours?

To my knowledge, I have never even crossed I-45, I-55, or I-65 at right angles since their opening as interstates. I may have crossed all of their eventual routes at right angles (or even rode or driven on some of them) in 1976 on my east on I-80/90 and west on I-70 cross country trip with my parents and siblings.

Kudos to the OP for this one - it's an intriguing question to ponder.

After scouring the national map, I would have to say it's probably Interstate 59.  And I was amazed at just how many interstates I have been on (even if just for a bit).  And have driven on myself, versus as a passenger (nearly 100%).

The only other significant interstates I haven't been on are: I-19, I-27 and I-82.  A couple of the new funky ones aren't on my list either (I-2, I-14). Been on plenty of northern I-69, but not the Texas derivatives (E, W, A, B, W, X, Y, Z, etc.).  None are longer than I-59 though.

Not difficult when you live on the opposite coast, to not see the other ocean.

I have only seen the Pacific Ocean once in person, in 2000.  I made sure and dipped my bare feet into it so that I could say that I have been "in" the ocean!

I have been on I-5.

For the Great Lakes, I have dipped my feet into Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, and have done full body swimming in Lake Michigan.

Have not yet seen Lake Huron or Lake Superior in person.

How about surfing ... where have you surfed?  As in board surfing.

I have in the Atlantic Ocean, Melbourne FL area, in the 1960s as a teenager; never was very good at it.

Nowhere else ...  The Atlantic and Pacific have many good surfing places, and (don't laugh) in certain weather Lake Superior and Lake Michigan have enough surf to make it feasible.

I have been to the Gulf of Mexico, Captiva Island near Fort Myers, FL.

Oregon surfing is done with wet suits.  Guess what that makes you look like to a shark?  FOOD!  Seals are a protected species here even though they gobble up fish like crazy and in due turn the sharks swarm in to eat the seals and on occasion a surfer gets a not so friendly encounter.  A friend of mine who also went to the same high school as I did was surfing here on the South Coast and had a chunk of his board removed by a shark.  This was noteworthy to make the news in USA Today when I was living in Utah during the mid 90's.

Glad he survived the encounter.  "Death by shark" is not something most people think of but you do have to watch out over here for just such a thing happening.

As far as north-south interstates go, mine would be I-15.  I-5 is a very close second, given the short difference in total length between the two.

In terms of east-west overall, it would be I-44.  However, if I were to break down I-84 into two segments given the gap between them, then the western half of I-84 would be the winner.

Checking my logs: The longest I haven't touched is I-A1 in Alaska.  After that, I am unsure about I-8 (although I could swear I ended up on a short section of it around Yuma; just not sure where, exactly).  After that, I-A4...after that, I-45.
No change, here.

Interstate 91 is my answer, I think.  In the past it was 85, then it was 20.  But I've since done I-20's duplex with I-59, and the section of I-85 north of US58 in Virginia.

Other Interstates I haven't driven (in case one is longer):
4 22 27 45 73 78 83 97 99

For me, it's I-25, though I have passed it on I-70 and I-90.

Longest Interstate I haven't intersected is I-8.

I guess I should update this, since I was on a good amount of I-25 in August 2019. The answer is now western I-84, something I hope to remedy in the coming years. Longest odd-numbered Interstate I haven't been on is I-45.

For the record, the only 2dis I haven't been on are I-2, I-14, eastern I-86, southern I-87, eastern I-88, the Hawai'i interstates, and the Puerto Rico interstates.

Interesting.

I haven't been on I-39, I-68, I-72, I-74, I-82, Eastern I-86, Either I-88 and I-96.  Of that list, I-74 is the longest.

But wait, there's more!

I haven't been on the original I-69 alignment, just the Texas parts. If you add the other section in Indiana to the original route, I-69 would be the longest.

Interesting side note, when thinking of this subject, I realized I had never been on the original route of I-49, just the segment from Shreveport to Texarkana.  While not the longest, it does make the closest interstate to my home that I have never been on.

This also got me thinking of other subjects:  Have I driven any given state's entire interstate network?  Yes
Have I driven my own state's entire interstate network? No.  Interesting to mention here is that I had driven I-44 for many years, but had never been on the Texas part of it until late last year, and even that, I still didn't see all 14 miles!

Up until three years ago it was I-5, when I finally drove part of it in Sacramento (basically from the airport to I-80 but it still counts).  Now I think it's the western I-84.  Seems like I have been on bits and pieces of just about every 2di except for 2, 8, 11, 14, 17, 19, 27, 39, 41, 72, 82, western 86, both 88's, and 99.

I'm fairly certain it's I-15.  I may have been on a small part of it when I was much younger.  If it's not 15, then it's definitely I-5.

What's yours?

I-90. The closest I have ever gotten to it was driving up I-91 to Six Flags New England (my home park I NJ the rides are constantly breaking down). I-90 is the longest interstate highway in the US btw, darn, was hoping that title would go to I-80.

Mainlines remaining: 19, 11, and "southern" 87.

I picked up about two-thirds of I-72 last month, so I-86 in Idaho (oops), then I-19 is now my longest untraveled interstate.

Mine is I-77, although there is a possibility it could be I-85 as I haven't tried to remember back to my 1 trip each to Montgomery, AL and Atlanta, GA for any possible concurrencies.  Try to specifically avoid both cities when traveling the Southeast as I have an unreasonable loathing of traffic.

Longest interstate I haven't been on is western I-84.

EDIT: I forgot that I-84 has a concurrency with I-15 in Utah that I've been on.  I've also been on I-29, I-85 and I-77 solely due to concurrencies with other interstates, so the longest one I haven't been on is I-49.

I've been on at least part of every x0 and x5.

Mine was incorrect.

Longest I haven't been on other than a concurrency is the western I-84.

I have been on I-49 in a concurrency with I-40, so the longest I haven't been on any part of is I-91. Actually could have been on it this summer but we went through Brattleboro on US 5 instead so we could stop for gas and ice cream.

It's either I-80, I-15 or Western I-84 - ironically all travel in or near SLC.

I went to conferences in Reno and SLC in the late 90s, but took a taxi from the airport to the convention center and don't know the route we took in either place.
If you went to downtown SLC, you probably took both I-80 and I-15.

Actually, probably not I-15. The fastest way from the SLC airport to the convention center is almost certainly the 600 and 500 South ramps directly from I-80; that movement does not involve I-15. That interchange was reconfigured around 2000, but I'm fairly sure the actual 15/80 merge point was still beyond the downtown viaducts.

Though unlikely, there's a chance that your taxi took North Temple into the city, which doesn't use any freeways. If you remember taking a freeway, it was almost certainly I-80.

I remembered I had been on I-80 when I went to Reno for a conference, so my answer is now either I-15 (possibility of a very short stint in Salt Lake City) or Western I-84.

I'm not sure why (for example) I wouldn't count myself being on I-57 when the only parts I've only been on are the concurrencies with I-64 and I-70. It's still marked as I-57 on the BGS and reassurance shields.

It gets a bit more complicated for unsigned routes, like if you've been on I-25 in Colorado, would you count that as being on US 87 as well?

I don't think they are one in the same.  US-87 in Colorado is cosigned with I-25 for a very long way.  I am more thinking about short concurrencies that are clearly one route hopping on the other through route of a mile or two.  For the longest time, I had only been on I-59 during the concurency with I-20, but that concurrency exists in two states.  Saying I had been on I-70 years ago even though literally the only place I was on it was the Poplar Street Bridge in St. Louis (pre-Stan Musial days) because I traveled from I-44 and then got on I-64.  I don't really feel like I have been on I-77 in Virginia because the only time I have been on it is the wrong way concurrency on I-81.  Technically speaking, all cases, you are on the route even if you spend a mile on it when it cosigns with another, but I feel like I cheated to get it into my road portfolio.

I don't think they are one in the same.  US-87 in Colorado is cosigned with I-25 for a very long way.  I am more thinking about short concurrencies that are clearly one route hopping on the other through route of a mile or two.  For the longest time, I had only been on I-59 during the concurrency with I-20, but that concurrency exists in two states.

I mean, you've been on over 10% of I-77 in Virginia.

I am not fighting this, lol.  I am just saying it feels cheap....  Like your crush was way out of your league and didn't go to the dance with you, so you went to the dance with her ugly friend.  Then you both rode in the same car to the dance, so you still went to the dance with your crush right?

To proceed with the analogy, but maybe your crush got drunk and accidentally kissed you instead of her date?

Below is a list of all the interstates I have not yet traveled. The longest is I-76 at 622 miles. (I consider both stretches of I-76 to be part of the same interstate.)

A minor update from the above. Before there were 22 routes I hadn't been on, totaling 4,367 miles. Now that's been reduced to 16, totaling 1,944 miles.
I- 8 348
I-86 246
I-22 213
I-17 146
I-78 144
I-82 144
I-37 143
I-27 124
I-99 99
I-83 85
I-73 82
I-19 64
I- 2 47
I-14 26
I-97 18
I-11 15

This was actually a fun question to ponder and after wracking my brain a bit, my answer is I-27. Driven by it but never on it. Second would be I-82, which again I've driven past but never on.

Yes, though now that I look at it, the I-49 concurrency with I-44 didn't exist the last time I was on I-44 so I do NOT count that.

Look at it this way:

I once drove from the Twin Cities to Herrin, IL.  The route I took was this:  I-94 to Tomah (WI), I-90 to Rockford (IL), US-51 to Sandoval (IL), US-50 to Salem (IL), I-57 south from there.

Should I not say I was on I-39 during that trip, just because the only part I was on was co-signed (for 218 miles!) with the through-routes I was actually taking (I-90 and US-51)–and even though I clinched the Illinois portion of I-39 in the process?

Seems like that approach would be rather ridiculous.

Not to get too technical, but I didn't think I-35 went through the Midwest.  Maybe Iowa gets thrown into the Midwest, but I feel like its more like the great plains.  Missouri has always been associated as a southern state and it has the gateway arch which is the gateway to the west. Anyone else's thoughts?  It's kinda an interesting thing to me, those fringe states.

I am not arguing, just interested.

I never considered anything west of the Mississippi to be the Midwest.  My definition isn't gospel, definitely an eye opener.

Also interesting in that poll, some people consider Kansas and Oklahoma part of the Midwest.

Oklahoma's an interesting one, as it's on the line between midwestern and southern (and I've seen other posts online debating it). It's only one aspect, but this accent map (which I love - it's super detailed!) shows Oklahoma as falling having both "midland" and "southern" accents: https://aschmann.net/AmEng/ (https://aschmann.net/AmEng/). I haven't been to Oklahoma myself to make my own judgement.

You didn't come off harsh.  I just wanted everyone to know I am not fighting about this, but instead really interested.  I always thought of the Midwest as Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.  Like I said, I have always felt the Mississippi was a hard divider for a lot of things, and the Midwest has always been one of them.  I guess your location really depends on you perception.

US 81 is a dividing line for quite a lot of things, such as population density and rainfall. This means that the majority of Kansas's population lives on the Missouri side, but not the majority of its land area.

Yeah, but state boundaries are drawn by humans and don't often reflect physical geographic boundaries... So if you're going to use state boundaries to divide the country up, it only makes sense to divide them culturally.

Culturally, insisting the Plains are not the Midwest makes zero sense. MN/WI/eastern ND/eastern SD are inseparable from each other culturally. IA and NE are inseparable. MO and KS are inseparable.
MO has Ozarks.

So does OK.

Pfft.  Not like MO and AR.  OK is flat.

Says the guy who has done nothing off of I-40 in Oklahoma, if you're who I think you are on mob-rule. Oklahoma is far more diverse than I-40 west of OKC. I-40 has some gentle hills east of OKC. Tulsa has legit hills. And that's to say nothing of the Ouachitas, the Wichitas, or the stuff around Black Mesa.

In Kansas and Nebraska, anything in green in the first map is part of the Midwest, while anything in orange isn't. To make things simpler, SD/ND/MN follows the state line (MN is, and SD and ND aren't). Oklahoma follows the same rules as Kansas and Nebraska if you don't consider it part of the South.

Now look at the second map, and where the second darkest green begins. Pretty much the same line.

Would a separate "Great Plains" region also exist under this definition? My main issue with it is that I'm not sure what the Dakotas are if not the Midwest. They're even more Midwestern than Nebraska/Kansas IMO. In fact, I would submit that the Dakotas embody the "Great Plains" subset of the Midwest (and are the strongest evidence that such a subset exists) both culturally and geographically.

I don't believe that places have to belong to one region and one region only. I recognize a Great Plains region that overlaps partially with the Midwest (and the South, in the case of Oklahoma and Texas). The Great Plains end to the west where the mountains begin and to the east where the trees begin.

The problem with defining areas is that our country doesn't have a lot of sharp cultural boundaries, it's more steady.

If we define the Chicago area to be 100% Midwestern, it's not like that 100% stretches to a certain point and then you reach an area that's 0% Midwestern.

I've lived 10+ years at each end of Indiana and spent countless time in between, and I can definitively tell you that it's gradual.

The Hammond/Gary area is 100% Midwestern.

Lafayette and Kokomo are about 90% Midwestern and about 10% Southern.

By the time you get to Indy, it's 20-25% Southern.

At the Kentucky border, it's more like 35-40% Southern.

I grew up in Atwood, KS.  While living there, the thought never once occurred to me that it wasn't in the Midwest.

But, just in case I was in the minority or unduly influenced by parents who had a misunderstanding of what the Midwest really was, I just texted a good friend of mine who grew up his whole childhood on a farm near Fowler, KS, to ask him if it's in the Midwest.  He just texted back to say 'Yes'.

So, while your delineation may be interesting in theory, it doesn't appear to accurately represent the view of the people who actually live here.

Oh, I weight the opinions of people who actually live or have lived there much more heavily.  I can't say I've actively sought the opinions of the people I know in that part of the country, but I can't imagine they would think the Great Plains aren't part of the Midwest.

I would question parts of southern Indiana/Ohio being called the Midwest light years before I'd ever question the Dakotas, Nebraska, or Kansas.

From my perspective, the KS/CO state line is a decent approximation for the divider between Midwest and West.  There is a small strip of far eastern Colorado that resembles the rest of the Midwest (this (https://goo.gl/maps/BvwW2Lzvzpi24jky8) could be somewhere in northern Iowa if you didn't know better), but it's a very narrow strip and hardly worth mentioning.

For me, though, the question becomes this:  where is that line farther north?  I mean, how different, really, is this (https://goo.gl/maps/hYBRb34TyGn1Lb2KA) from this (https://goo.gl/maps/bdUHvNbiuKtn7JS9A)?  Yet is it reasonable to say that any place in Montana could be considered Midwestern?  That doesn't seem quite right either...

Agreed with most of this, but I'd extend it down into at least the northern half of Oklahoma. My parents grew up in Bartlesville and considered themselves Midwesterners - a sentiment I'd agree with having been there several times. Even Tulsa feels like it has a lot more in common with Omaha or Lincoln than it does with any of the similarly-sized Texas cities.

I could get on board with that. I thought about including eastern Montana as well, but in reality, I feel like that area has a lot of people who are proud Montanans and feel like Montana is 100% in the West no matter how much it looks like Kansas up there.

I mostly agree with this thought, although I'd frame it more as: should the "Great Plains" be considered a grouping distinct from the "Midwest"?

The answer probably depends on why you are discussing geographic regions.

That's the part of Montana I'm originally from, and absolutely it's both Great Plains (which IMO is a more of a geologic principle) and Western (which is more cultural). Though western ND and eastern MT tend to be a blurred line between Upper Midwest and Western. You find many similarities between both cultural groups in that area.

Since I've never been anywhere west of the Eastern Time Zone, I probably had a long list there.

But the longest W-E route is I-94. The longest S-N route is I-35 (I thought I-5 was longer).

A big surprise to me, I don't think I was ever on I-20. Perhaps in Atlanta back in 1975 or something like that, I know I was on BS 20 in Florence.

This has been driving me crazy since I first saw this thread years ago. For awhile I thought it was I-10, but must have been on it during a family trip to New Orleans in the late 60's (we flew in, I assume using Louie Armstrong which is right off I-10). I-75 was in the running, until I remembered a work trip to Dayton, OH and Lexington, KY in the mid 80's which might have involved part of I-75. (I remember part of the journey between the 2 involved a 15 minute flight that was the last leg of a 747 flight from Japan. My group of 5 were the only passengers on the plane-my only flight ever on a Jumbo jet. Ridiculously, the Cincinnati airport was also involved.) I am 100% certain I have never been on I-94, which is the 8th longest Interstate, although I did cross over the western edge outside of Billings in 2018.

Oklahoma is twelve regions in a trenchcoat pretending to be a coherent state, so if you're going to split any state, it would be the one to split. I should note, though, that lumping it in with the South (as some people do) is not correct. When I visited Mississippi and especially Louisiana in March, it felt like I was visiting a foreign country. If anything, OK/TX should be a region to themselves; if not, they should both be in the same region as KS and MO. (Kansas feels a lot more like home to me than I felt in Mississippi.)

I agree.  It geographically is closest to the Great Plains, but I have never felt like I was in the Great Plains in Oklahoma.  It's it's own bird.  It's not south, its not west although it borders states that are considered both.  It has mountains and flat land...  There is way more in Oklahoma than people think.  OU just needs to stop stealing our football players.

I still stick to my guns that Ohio is only partly in the Midwest. You can move the line I posted upthread east a bit if you want, but the southeast you'd have a tough time convincing me of. Since West Virginia is maybe the toughest state outside of Oklahoma to categorize, the portion of Ohio that borders WV isn't too different.

While I, as a nitpicker, appreciate your attempt to make this needlessly more complicated than it already is–I also do not appreciate your attempt to make this needlessly more complicated than it already is.

But seriously, as someone who stormchases and knows the land well, I do consider the Eastern Great Plains as part of the Midwest. I define the "gray area" between the Eastern and Western Great Plains to be roughly 50 miles east of the CO/KS border and going straight north and south from roughly Amarillo to Minot.

I define it at the Colorado/Kansas border. Why? Because the line has to be drawn somewhere, and no matter where you draw it, there's going to be "how is x in this region while y is in this region" complaints, so you might as well draw the line on the state border where it's clear and obvious.

On the eastern side, where do you all think the Midwest begins/ends? Most common answer is OH border with WV or PA, though I've seen Pittsburgh and Buffalo get included in sometimes, and I know some East coasters think the Midwest begins west of I-81.

As I've said, the KS/CO state line is a decent approximation, but it still doesn't solve (for me, at least) the Dakotas/Montana conundrum.

I personally treat the I-71 corridor as the general eastern Midwest border. If Ontario was part of the US I could see the rationale for including WNY and Pittsburgh in it, but since it is not, I don't.

The longest Interstate I haven't been on is I-10. I-90 is probably the Interstate I've been on most often, and I've been on I-80 many times as well (including the portion that's 80/90). I've only been on I-40 a couple times, but I have been on it, so I-10 it is.

Growing up I generally thought of the Midwest as the states with "traditional" Big Ten universities, i.e., Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. I'm willing to accept a larger Midwest with Great Lakes and Great Plains subregions though it gets tricky once you start considering whether all of this or that state is truly Midwestern, or if it's just part.

I'd say Cleveland, mayyyybe Erie PA. Buffalo and Pittsburgh are very Rust Belt, but that's not synonymous with Midwest by any stretch even though it clearly overlaps.

I'll admit Iowa is something of an awkward fit here as it's the only one of those states that doesn't border the Great Lakes and the only one that wasn't at least part of the Northwest Territory. It's just that in my mind growing up (with apologies to fans of the old Big 8) the Big Ten was the Midwestern conference and therefore the Midwestern states were the states with Big Ten schools (except Pennsylvania, because Penn State was a johnny-come-lately). As I said, I now think of the Midwest as being a larger region with two subregions.

Though I think you'll always run into a bit of the problem of states A&B, B&C, and C&D feel like they should be in the same region but A&D don't.

I don't think there's a maybe about Buffalo and Pittsburgh being Rust Belt - they absolutely are. As it comes to culture, it's like why I said you can't separate MN and WI from ND and SD - you can't separate Cleveland from Buffalo and Pittsburgh culturally.

Right, I don't think we're disagreeing. I was referring to Cleveland/Erie as the eastern boundary of the Midwest. All four cities are very much part of the Rust Belt, which I think overlaps with the Midwest but is not synonymous.

Resurrecting this thread since mine has changed...

Since I last posted in here, I've gotten some mileage on I-94, I-81, and I-77, so my answer is now the eastern I-76.

For US highways - it turns out that somehow, I've been on some part of each of the 63 longest US routes. First one I still have never traveled is US 212. If I were to drive on that, it'd move all the way down to US 10 at #79.

I-70 - Almost made it in Baltimore.

I-94 - Never been to the Midwest

I-35 - Same as above.

Back in June, I finally drove I-70 in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.  So I think after I-94 and I-35, my next one up will be I-10.

I-5

Went to the Bay Area last year to work for 3 weeks, drove most of the interstates in the area, but never ventured east towards Sacramento or Stockton to get any part of I-5.

Just a few short months after I made that post, I flew into Sacramento and finally drove on I-5 leaving the airport and went as far south as US 50.  For such a long highway, it's still the only portion of it that I have.

So after recalculating, I-8 is now the longest interstate I have never driven on, followed by I-39, then probably I-82.

After my 2023 Summer vacation trip, my new answer is I-A1 at 406 miles. For the lower 48, I-8 at 353 miles.

This little exercise has me realizing just how many interstates that I've had the opportunity to be on - and have driven on all of them too. Basically, I've never been on I-19, I-27, I-82, the new I-2 and I-14, the Hawaii Interstates, nor any the Alaska "Interstates" (which I am not counting).

Of all these, I think it's I-27 that is the longest that I haven't been on.  I've driven by the north end of it in Amarillo, just as I've driven by the eastern terminus of I-82 near Hermiston, OR. But neither of those counts.

Disclosure: admittedly not counting 3di's - though I've been on most of them too.

For me it's probably I-82 -- although I drove a large chunk of I-182 a couple of weeks ago.  There aren't many 2di's that I haven't been on  -- I-2, I-41 (although I traveled parts of it before it became I-41), I-86, and I-99 (although I traveled parts of it before it became I-99) are the only ones that come to mind, plus whatever ones North Carolina has added in the past couple of years in the eastern part of the state.

I just realized I never got back to you about this question Sky. The eastern boundary I would say is the Ohio River and Allegheny River to the NY Line then west to Lake Erie. So Erie is in, Buffalo is out and Pittsburgh is borderline.

Just a curious post:

Can you really say you have been on an interstate if the only part you have been on was a cosign of a through route you were taking?
Yes

For the longest time, I had only been on I-59 during the concurrency with I-20, but that concurrency exists in two states.

I mean, you've been on over 10% of I-77 in Virginia.

I am not fighting this, lol.  I am just saying it feel cheap....

Roads don't get mad if you drive on another road.

My guess is 21, though I've crossed the interchange on I-81 where US 21 ends several times.  Next is 27, though I've been through the interchange on I-40 where I-27's current north end is.  I can't think of a 28, unless there's some state route I've been on that I don't remember.

Did you mean to post this here? (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=24342.0?)

Yes, I wondered what had happened to it.  I've fixed it.

Up until 2022, the answer for me was I-5. However, I was on 3 miles of it in Sacramento that summer.
Not counting interstates outside of the contiguous US, the only 1 or 2 digit interstates I have never been on are 2, 8, 14, 16, 19, 82, 84 WEST, 86 WEST, 87 SOUTH, 96. So I guess my answer is now i-84 WEST.

I've been on I-15 now, so my answer is now I-5.
