Title: Lets play a game.
Post by: ce929wax on October 02, 2018, 03:24:30 PM
Lets play a game.  This game is called "find the quickest route" between two destinations.  The twist is that there will be restrictions on routes, states, counties, towns etc. that you cannot use in determining the quickest route between the two destinations.

First one is find the quickest route between Denver and San Diego.  You may not use I-70 or I-15 to get to San Diego.

Seriously, though...  This game is inherently flawed, because who's to say how long a particular route takes?  Google Maps will vary based on what time you query it.  And an off-Interstate route might show fastest, but you're realistically able to speed more on the Interstate than on that route.

This is a trick question. What you do is start in San Diego and use I-15 and I-70 to go to Denver. :sombrero:

To play it a bit more honestly, using Google Maps and the starting points provided by the city names alone, I get 18:54 for I-8 to I-10 to I-25, including the cut off of NM-26. Taking I-8 to I-10 to I-17 to I-40 to I-25, including the AZ-347 cut-off, is a bit faster at 18:34. Taking I-8 to AZ-85 to AZ-303 to I-17 to US-160 and US-285 is a bit faster still at 17:58. Random clicks here and there suggest that this last routing is about the best you can do (except for the Forbidden Routing, which, for comparison purposes, clocks in at 16:01).

So I looked it up using the "Do not use highways" feature, which I think might be a good game to play. At 12:19 MDT today, Friday, October 5, the quickest route NOT using highways is 22:23.

Main Routes: US 85, US 285, US 160, US 550, NM 516, NM 371, US 491, NM 134, AZ 264, BIA 15, AZ 87, AZ 260, AZ 89A, AZ 89, AZ 71, US 60, AZ 72, AZ 95, US 95, CA 78 into SD Metro.

Due to the I-15/I-90 multiplex in and around Butte I would recommend MT 41 to MT 2 instead.

Edit: Round 2: You can use any road you want, but you cannot cross directly from Arizona to Utah.

The actual solution for Boston to Worcester (as intended by Roadgeekteen) is enter I-93 from Science Park MTBA station in order to not touch US 1, then I-495 and I-290.

As for NYC to Poughkeepsie, use Hutchinson River Parkway to I-684 to NY 22 to NY 55.

Now for a tricky one: Rock Springs to Evanston (both in Wyoming) without touching any Interstate.

That's taking the long way sir, and IMO you can touch banned routes without using them (unless a concurrency is required), even if using mass transit. That's why I recommended using Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited (which partially runs on track owned and operated by the MBTA) between Boston's South Station and Worcester's Union Station, or using the MBTA's Framingham/Worcester Line between Boston's South Station and Worcester's Union Station.

You're sure that starting with I-88 and I-86 isn't faster?

Nashville to Charlotte. I-40 is banned. (Hint: this can be done in under half an hour.)

I'm going to think that that half an hour hint means that I should be looking at Charlotte, Tennessee so US 70 to TN 47 should work.
(EDIT: This route actually takes ~50 minutes.)

US 62 to US 180 to I-20 to I-45. I-20 doesn't reach El Paso.

And yes, I know US 62 and US 180 overlap for a long way, but US 180 overlaps I-10 (which is banned on this route) while US 62 doesn't.

On second thought, I'd use US 62 to US 180 to US 87 to US 290.

Now for another one: Moon to Mars. No spacecraft allowed. (Hint: search around Pittsburgh)

You could've also used TX state routes.

Take Brodhead Road which becomes a part of PA-18, then continue on PA-18 across the Ohio River to PA-68, then take PA-68 to Quadrant Route 3015 and you're there!

Right down the barrier islands.  Starting in Brigantine: Brigantine Blvd to North Carolina Ave, then right on Atlantic.  This road takes on several different names (Ocean Drive a few times), but other than for a few left turns when the road ends, you can make it down to Cape May in a straight shot.

Continue on SR 82 until the Maple Avenue intersection, with a right onto SR 124 eastbound. Continue on Springfield Avenue until the exit for the I-78 local lanes. Exit the local lanes onto SR 24, followed by an exit onto I-287. Exit left onto I-87 (NY State Thruway) and take the exit onto NY SR 17, then continue on SR 32. Turn right onto Smith Clove Road, which becomes Mineral Springs Road, which becomes Angola Road, then take the exit onto US 9W, then exit onto Old US 9W, then take the ramp to River Road, which becomes Water Street, which becomes Leroy Place, then make a right onto Old Balmville Road, with a right back onto US 9W. Continue on US 9W until reaching Kingston, then right onto SR 32 again. Return back to US 9W, then zig-zag across Esopus Creek and continue right onto US 9W in Saugerties. Right onto SR 144, then continue back onto SR 32 again, then exit onto I-787 and exit again onto the South Mall Arterial, then make a quick sharp exit onto Swan Street, then make a right onto Washington Avenue (SR 5) followed by a quick left onto Eagle Street immediately followed by a quick right onto Pine Street, then make a quick left back onto SR 32 (Pearl Street). Make a right onto Orange Street which immediately becomes a ramp onto I-787 northbound (again), then quickly exit onto I-90's free crossing of the Hudson River, then exit back onto US 9, then circle the roundabout onto SR 9H, which joins SR 23, then turn left onto SR 82, then exit onto the Taconic State Parkway, then continue south on the Sprain Brook Parkway, then exit onto Central Park Avenue (SR 100), with a quick exit back onto I-87 (NY State Thruway). Continue onto the Major Deegan Expressway, then take Exit 3 to Exterior Street and then continue onto 135th Street, then make a left onto the Third Avenue Bridge over the Harlem River, quickly making an exit onto the Harlem River Drive, which soon changes into the FDR Drive, taking Exit 12 onto York Avenue, followed by a right onto 59th Street and an exit onto the Queensborough Bridge, which dumps you onto the Outer Roadway of the Queensborough Bridge over the East River and Roosevelt Island, which dumps you onto Queens Plaza, left exit onto Queens Boulevard (SR 25), with a right onto Van Dam Street, then a left onto Borden Avenue, which soon ramps onto I-495 which strictly becomes the LIE past Exit 19 (before which it is also known as the Queens-Midtown Expressway), finally exiting at Exit 71 onto SR 24 (Edwards Avenue), which soon becomes Nugent Drive, then circle around the roundabout onto Peconic Avenue and then make a right back onto SR 25 (Main Street).

However the way back is much shorter, as one doesn't need to go all the way to Albany in order not to pay tolls :sombrero:.

Next one: Boston to Manchester without using Interstate, US, or state routes. (Hint: there's always good old England)

Buffalo-Baltimore: US-219 -> I-68 -> I-70 -> Cooks Ln -> US-40.
How about Denver to Winter Park, CO (a drive I have taken myself) but no I-70 or any local road alongside I-70.
Hint: It's impossible to get to Winter Park without taking US-40.

The two cities border each other; there are a whole bunch of residential streets where all you have to do is cross over the city line and you're done.

Yeah it's more important to simply follow the signs for US-17-92 (via SR 50 if driving from the Orange Blossom Trail segment on US-441) than to get lost via the residential streets.

Except there's no image there. If you can find a road sign with a hand-drawn 4, then that would work.

Another option is to use an older deck that says "+4", although I can't think of any road signs that would have it. HOV 4+ (if any exist) comes close, though.
