Title: Transportation Haikus
Post by: Zmapper on October 28, 2011, 05:25:08 PM
http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/12572/enhance-the-commute-with-haikus/

"Yesterday, @marctomik adapted an idea from King County, Washington and the Washington (state) DOT. Because Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct is being torn down, @wsdot started a contest to write some " vaikus" about it."

In case you forgot what a Haiku is about, it is a 5/7/5 syllable poem form that started in Japan.

Here's mine:

The buses are nice/
But are rather slow at times/
I'd rather ride my bike.

http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23transpohaiku If you have a twitter account, that is the hashtag to use. Now it's your turn.

The idea originated in Seattle, where King County and then WSDOT were encouraging folks to come up with "vaiku" on Twitter to commemorate the closing and partial teardown of the WA 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct.  A friend of mine in DC mentioned that, and coincidentally I was the first to come up with #transpohaiku (though I didn't use the hashtag at the time).  It's to the point where now Ray LaHood is coming up with some.

Travel ceaselessly
One shall not find nirvana
But lots of tarmac

Vibration in wheel
Should have been balanced last week
Press on regardless

The vanishing point
Is always ahead of us
But without a sign

No objects the same
Verisimilitude fades
Some shields are very ugly

and the US 395 quintuple haiku:

Route 395
Used to start north from Spokane
Now it's much longer

Unfortunately,
I-15 displaced a lot
of its southern part

Eastern Sierras
Into Nevada and back
Tons of scenery

South of Mono Lake
Stay after sunset and watch
Millions of bright stars

Some people think that
This should become I-13
Not necessary

Negatory, sir
Clinching counties and highways
in P A, N Y

Route Fifteen today
then Two Twenty tomorrow
then into N Y

Will clinch all counties
except those on Long Island
then enter Vermont

Clinch V T counties
on Friday before the meet
then back to N Y

I Eighty Eight clinch
is the plan for my trip home
then south to P A

will take Eighty west
to US Route Two Nineteen
and then will clinch it

After that the plan
is to find the fastest way
back to Kentucky

Good stuff, fun indeed
If you pass through Geneva
Hit me up, briefly

My cell number is
on facebook, and my dorm lies
close to route fourteen.

I can meet you for
lunch. I know a good place in
town. Cheap too, and quick.

So when you pass through
great Ontario county
please give me a call

On Thurs or Friday.
Though on Thurs I have class, from
twelve to three PM.

And Friday from three
to four-thirty, but not fret
for reasons I see.

esoteric is
this poem getting, and fast
but alas, I write more

Haikus are fun, clearly
turns moods to good from dreary
short poems, merely

Rhyming, this is new,
but a haiku can rhyme too.
If not, it will sue.

South park is funny
and by that I mean punny

Vans with Kansas plates
Drivers paid minimum wage
Meh, it's a paycheck.

Innerbelt rebuild
We needed it yesterday
When will it be done?

Fix our crowded roads
I think we can pay for it
Tea Party says no.

I like roundabouts
Better than a four-way stop
Some drivers fear change.

Yellow light's too short
Brake and set off driver-cam
Go and get ticket.

Where's my flying car?
Actually, it exists
It just costs too much.

Looking for a forum thread
Why can't I search by title?
All I need sometimes.

One-way pairs work well
But not for pedestrians
Say city planners.

One-ways can be calm
Just lower the speed limit,
Add parking and trees.

Middle of nowhere.
I assume the van is white.
Wait at the crew change.

Wish to remain vague
Though I think you're on to me
Arn't most work vans white?

Nudge nudge, nod, wink wink.
Two one oh seven six eight,
Decal on the door.

Funny, I didn't
have that number memorized;
Had to look it up.

My new Corolla
will surely travel better

My wife, me, and sis
will spend time in New Orleans.
Might yell at the Saints

Hope 10 doesn't suck

I didn't realize that zmapper made a haiku there.  I was only trying to correct his post on the number of syllables in I-238.  Only a coincidence that my post was 2/3rds of another haiku. Thanks to formulaone for adding line three.

A variety of modes of transportation

I like the slow life.
Small towns, walking, you know.  Hey!
Move over, lane hog!

My right shoulder's weak.
Backpack propped, cardboard in hand.
Brake lights!  Run!  Hurry!

Finally asleep.
3 A.M. at a truck stop.
Everyone, get off.

Two hours late?  Oh, well.
Ditch my seat, head up two cars.
Watch the farms fly by.

Heading to Greektown.

dug through the muse trash
should i go with that doggone

but no that won't do

then the angels sang

we have yet to write

just remember to keep it
five seven and five

rough draft and revise
make it the absolute best

Since March I've not been on-call.
Mental health improved.

Regular schedule,
Same eight hours ev'ry day.
Mental health improved.

No more long road trips,
Just quick runs 'tween yards and trains
Around Columbus.

No road trips for work.
Now I can enjoy driving
Far on my days off.

Central Avenue
And I have a new channel
To post road trip vids.

Not much to see yet.
I'd name the channel here, but
It's eight syllables.

I've been distracted

Breezewood reviled
Another damn Clearview rant
Disliked new bridge name

Highway incomplete
Was it eminent domain
Or lack of funding?

Unnecessary
Exit dumps you off at the
Middle of nowhere

Never perfected
Lo! A new country club zoned
Right in future path

Dotted lines for now
Bickering developers
The sounds of silence

How else to explain
Half-assed projects dreamt up by
entire asshats.

Who thinks Marf should be back on this forum? I never met him, but it would be funny if I did.

Absoultely not. He kept attacking webny99. Quite often, the first post of one of his sockpuppets would be an attack, making it obvious who he was.

He might have had others. I believe they gave him an IP address ban, although he managed to circumvent it at least once.

I think he started using VPNs to get around it, and as a result they banned VPNs on the forum.

Maybe in your state.

Lower than normal

Yes it has picked up
Since bottoming out in March.
But still not normal

This forum would be
unreachable from China
should they block access

Since VPNs are widely used in the PRC to circunvent censorship, due to that stalker who kept trying to ban someone this forum would be completely inaccessible from there in the event of a block even if one is used, thus forcing someone to leave that country in order to enter this. Fortunately it shouldn't happen, as we don't discuss sensitive topics about China.

Also, I had a real headscratcher putting that haiku together. Does it need to rhyme anywhere?

Because you already have an account. You can no longer request a new account that way.

There's some discussion of that here (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=22058.0) (note you will have to be logged out to view), in a thread started by Babafan23, another Marf sockpuppet (I think). That sockpuppet never made it onto the forum, thankfully.

Well the first line is only four syllables instead of five...

Here's some I thought of, about a waterpark I often go to in my hometown of KC:

In KC's Northland
There's an awesome waterpark
Its name is The Springs

Right near KCI
It's close to Zona Rosa
Just off 29

Love that waterpark!
It's a great place to cool off
On hot summer days

It's a lot of fun
Two slides, a lazy river
And some diving boards

It doesn't cost much
Just nine dollars to get in
Open noon 'til 8

When it's hot outside,
The Springs Aquatic Center
Is the place to be.

From I-29:
Exit 10 (Tiffany Springs)
Head west, then turn left
