I've sort of reached an impasse over what I want to do with my Flickr, since I've been using it for photojournalistic things lately and I don't want to drown it in road photos. So until I put them all up on Flickr (which would involve sorting them into sets, etc), I've put 68 random photos from the Richmond area on Picasa. Included are new signage at the northern end of I-295 at I-64 (Short Pump), photos of the end of US 250 (still no signs...), and an upside-down US 60 shield that was corrected not long after I saw it.

If AARoads wants to use any of this stuff, feel free. :)

So does this mean that some of the older signs on the Downtown Expressway were replaced?

I've never seen "These Lanes End" before, but have seen "This Lane Ends" once or twice:

Did they simply make it upright or did they replace it wholesale?

When did they start signing it as "Toll" VA 195?

Nice find!

I'll try to add some of your west end of I-295 photos to the Interstate Guide. That page is woefully out of date now that the new flyover is there.

That sign (and others on this side of VA 195) dates back to before I-195 northbound was truncated to VA 76/VA 146. VA 195 westbound (between I-95 and the toll plaza) for the most part retains original signage, except near I-95. VA 195 eastbound had its signage replaced in 2004 or 2005.

I've always found that strange, but those THESE LANES END signs were there before the flyover was built. VDOT just reused them.

It was entirely replaced. Here's the new sign.

AFAIK, that's standard VDOT practice when it comes to toll roads. VA 895 and VA 76 are also signed with TOLL banners. I don't know when the modern VDOT signage appeared, but it must have been in the past 6 or so years. (as a side note, I'm not entirely sure why those VDOT signs are even there, since VDOT does not maintain or own VA 195)

Thanks. There's more of those scattered about; there used to be a nice, original (VA 195 opened in the 1970s) VA 195/I-195/I-64 assembly on US 1/301 near VCU, but the sign tree was recently destroyed and the VA 195 shield stolen.

Thanks! I'll have to go back over there and get more photos of the whole interchange, then. :)

Likewise with the Dulles Toll Road and the Dulles Greenway / VA 267.  Here's a sample pic.

Yep, the same "END I-295" signs are still there.

This was also true for VA 44 and I-95 back to at least the early 80s...
