I-66 in DC earlier this morning. Dave Dildine of WTOP, who took the pictures, says a dump truck operator forgot to lower the raised bed.

Seems to happen a lot. There was a incident on I-49 near Kansas City last year or the year before.

Quite often it's not that they forgot to lower the bed (otherwise, they would've been hitting other overhead bridges, signs, traffic lights, wires, etc before they get to this point).  But rather, they left the "PTO" (Power Take Off) button on, and at some point either accidently hit the switch which raised the bed, or a malfunction raised the body.

But...it's easier just to say they forgot to lower the bed on TV (or radio, traffic reports, etc), because that's what people understand.

No idea what happened to this sign on I-57 north near the junction with I-74. https://goo.gl/maps/BUAV14iHtFaRpb4u8

Almost guaranteed a car hit the left side, knocking the post off its concrete base, but these sign supports are often constructed in such a way where the other supports can hold the sign without much issue. Sign panels went flying. The injured panels are probably sitting in some transportation yard and the sign is probably going to be replaced in full.

The fact I don't see any tire tracks in the grass/dirt means this sign may have been in this condition for quite a while though.

Might as well be there facing up as it’s companion sign was changed to mixed case.

This sign is slightly damaged and you can tell it's bent. They installed a new BGS after a storm ripped off the old one. but the right support beam is hanging up. Wonder how that can get replaced because otherwise the sign will be torn apart again.

Edited to add: Another one here: https://goo.gl/maps/QWuD9MSnjoRdbSwe7 And it was like that when we were driving to South Carolina back in September. I wonder what they are up to...

I forgot about this until I looked through my camera roll recently, but last fall, while on I-85 Southbound in Opelika, Alabama, this BGS looked to be severely damaged for whatever reason.

It seems like it got hit twice.

New confirmation signs were mounted to the retaining wall over the shoulder.  Most were destroyed the first winter by snow and ice thrown from snowplows.

There's this damaged sign at the end of I-25 southbound in Las Cruces, NM.
If you look at the historical imagery from Google Street View, you can see the upper right corner starts to peel off in May 2021.
By last October (2021) it's almost completely peeled off.

Hurricane Ian versus traffic signal. Surprisingly it didn't fully snap off.

The Weather Channel had a live clip showing a traffic signal head (middle head) getting ripped off a spanwire by Hurricane Ian last night (I think it was in Cape Coral).  They showed it again later, along with a clip of city workers hauling it out of the intersection.  It was surprising that the other heads didn't get ripped off, too.

Couldn't find that one, but here's one in Tampa where the entire spanwired snapped right in front of a police cruiser (or so they claim): https://www.wric.com/news/u-s-world/watch-traffic-light-yanked-off-line-by-hurricane-ian-crashes-in-front-of-cops/

Google Street View didn't catch it, but on I-90 WB in PA, the advance guide sign for Exit 6 was destroyed in such a way that it must have been rammed into by a truck.

A BGS with part of a patch missing, revealing a former message. Here, the new sign included a Regional Road 41 shield, while the original sign did not.

I got the chance to see this knocked over sign up close last week. I tried to pick it up and I can confirm it is heavy.
