Google is no help. I get Route nn and State Route nn as well as New York State Route nn

Alps

I will just say NY ## in general or NY Route, since there is no NYC Route to compete with the state.

Rothman

NYSDOT generally uses Route NN for State and US routes in its project documents and titles.  Still uses INN for Interstates (I81, no hyphen, e.g.).

As a native New Yorker (Syracuse/Auburn area), most folks just said the Thruway (instead of I-90 or Route 90), Route 5, Route 31, Route 81, Route 11, or other ways like 690 or 321--if we are describing how people said what highway they were going on or where a business was on said highway, such as "We are going to the Pizza Hut on Route 5 in Auburn." or "We are going to take 690 to get to Carousel Center DestinyUSA."

If we are going by NYSDOT, Rothman's statement is correct.

You may sleep now.
I don't need a GPS.  I AM the GPS! (for family and friends)

I would hope so since I work there.

Yes, I do know that.  I did not add "He should know as he works there." as I was originally going to post.  :D

As native of the Lake Ontario snow belt just off "Route 81", I don't consider myself a "New Yorker". That's a downstate thing. :)

Or do what they do in Western NY - they stole the Los Angeles thing of calling everything "The".

"The 33".  "The 290".  "The 198", etc...

I hate it :)

That's a thing across the border in Ontario.  The 401, The 405, etc.  The toll-free portion of the Thruway is The I-90
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

Back when I lived in the area in the early 90s I always heard "The Mainline" when referring to the free portion of I-90
