Apologies for asking such a narrow topic, but I'm on the prowl for a NZ highway forum (similar to aaroads forum), primarily to make some inquiries about highway landmarks that would likely only be known to locals.
The one(s) I used to frequent on yahoo groups have vaporized.
Anyone from NZ (or Australia) who can be of help?
Thanks,
jpm
May as well post the inquiries in this thread. We have a few Aussie visitors. There are only one or two NZ road enthusiasts I'm aware of.
FreewayBrent posted a new video on New Zealand freeways specifically Waterview Tunnel in Auckland
They certainly have some sexy freeways and signage down there. Would be nice if they could fix the breezewood between NZ 1 and NZ 18, make more of NZ 1 a motorway, and add exit numbers to the motorways outside of Auckland.
Freeway Brent in another New Zealand road video.
Those roads are so American-looking, I'd probably forget to drive on the left side! Do the variable speed limit signs actually flash, or is that something to do with the camera?

That's an incompatibility between the refresh rate of the LED signs and camera's refresh rate (or something like that).

Yeah, that's the answer to the question I meant to ask, but decided to sound like an idiot instead.

Someone should reach out to Brent and invite him to join our board. His videos are good stuff.

I wish more people used their real names on this forum.

Had a nice drive on NZ 1 from Auckland to the tip of Te Reinga in December. We had the flying camera set up and I extracted almost a thousand still images, so I'll post that when it's completed.

Interesting post timing...
I think all the motorways on both islands with exits should have exit numbers, not just the ones around Auckland.

Interestingly, freeways look pretty similar the world over!
Could whoever's posting these label them briefly? Trying to go back to find a particular video means I have to watch them again.

A roadgeek can tell the difference! That said, New Zealand freeway signage (https://www.google.com/maps/@-36.9888819,174.8862451,3a,25y,151.75h,91.55t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sftU_kxK0vpsFBk19HxkhTg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) is remarkably similar (https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.0020656,174.8940008,3a,26.7y,323.19h,89.53t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sO_AnHXxeLeXSABAZaVFuyw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) to MUTCD signage - definitely some inspiration from the US there!

Well, I can see differences from state to state, each one has their nuances.
But in general, when I see freeways on the other side of the world, whether it is Chile, Australia, Algeria, etc., I see similar design characteristics.
Right drive versus left drive doesn't really change the basic design of the freeway.

I guess you're not a sign geek. The point is that, because of NZ's signage patterns, one could easily mistake themselves for driving in the states (especially when near a right exit (https://www.google.com/maps/@-36.8602609,174.7612348,3a,31.4y,282.01h,88.27t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqnzLrDMegi8og5NAp0Z2dg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)). They basically copied the MUTCD for their guide signs, and literally the only differences between their freeways and ours are the lack of yellow strips for the inner shoulder, use of metric, and that they drive on the left. That it. Nothing else. They even use route number/direction for navigation rather than control cities, which is not as common as one would think. Australia doesn't. Nowhere is Europe does. Mexico doesn't. South Africa doesn't. Israel doesn't. The UAE does not appear to. The only country I could find that does outside of the US, Canada, and New Zealand is South Korea.

New Zealand does use red paint on the shoulder of
some of their motorways (akin to some UK motorways), but I do not know the significance of the paint. That's the only other difference I can think of.

Did not notice that, unless it was in a work zone.

I got this wrong. It's not actually red paint. It's actually a sort of high-traction surface applied only sometimes (sometimes both shoulders, sometimes none, etc):

Definitely. Not just this thread, but everywhere. When there's a video, one wants to know what the video is about, why it's posted, and why they should watch it. Not just have a video and nothing else dropped into a post. This is a discussion forum, not social media.

bing101 does this
everywhere. It's too the point where it's a huge surprise if he posts something that
isn't just a video and no text. It's annoying no matter what thread it's in.
