As a few of you already know, the Virginia Highways Project (VHP) is hard-down for the time being, a casualty of recent server upgrades at the host.  Will let you know when we're back online.

Its working now for me too, and the Virginia 400 log is correct now.

froggie

That's in part because I spent an hour in chat last night with tech support.  They apparently got to it right away, instead of waiting the "24-48 hours" they told me it'd take before they got back to me.  I didn't get an E-mail about it overnight so I didn't bother checking this morning.

Now the question is did they fix my FTP issue?  Couldn't FTP into either site (VHP or ajfroggie)...

WillWeaverRVA

I was browsing randomly and just now noticed that there's an error on the VA 201-220 page: apparently VA 209 ends at US 211.

That one is on me.  I template the revisions I am doing based on the route numbers 20 higher than where I'm at.  So the 209 entry has that leftover from the 229 entry.  I will correct this in the next day or two...

Greetings--

The VHP announces the first content update for 2010:

New superpages have opened:

US 50 - http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/us050.htm
US 250 - http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/us250.htm
VA 6 - http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va006.htm
VA 36 - http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va036.htm

Also, these pages have been revamped with much more info and mapscans:
VA 141-160 - http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va141-160.htm
VA 421-499 - http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va421-499.htm

Highlights include new routes that are documented: VA 6Y #2, VA 141 #2, VA 147-Y, VA 441, VA 443, VA 444, and VA 445.

Also, did you know US 50 once had a dead end in Virginia as part of a gap in its routing?  Or that US 250 also had a gap in its routing?  And where does VA 154 really run?  Did you know Azalea Dr in Richmond east of US 1 was once a state highway (VA 421)?

Nice update, although I'll mention real quick that the error US 150 shield you mentioned was fixed sometime last year.

Great job, I thought it was interesting that VDOT moved VA 156 off Mill Pond Rd because it didn't want to build another I-95 interchange.  Otherwise the total length or the length according to the route log is wrong for VA 149 are both different.
I am now a PennDOT employee.  My opinions/views do not necessarily reflect the opinions/views of PennDOT.

Mapmikey

I have corrected the VA 149 and VA 150 errors pointed out above...

Thanks!

Greetings--

The back-to-back snowstorms in the DC area allowed me plenty of time to do research...a new content update has occurred at VHP:

Great reading. I could've sworn VA 407 had been decommissioned, and I think next time I go to Norfolk I'll look for that US 407 shield.

At one point, the evidence ponted at decommissioning, but apparently, only in Virginia Beach.

A few updates this evening to a few route log entires at VHP:

Found the month by which the CTB sent a resolution to then-BPR requesting that I-195 be added to the Interstate system (June, 1968):  http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/i95.htm#i195

General revisions to the I-495 entry:  http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/i95.htm#i495

Updated the VA 56 entry to reflect other information I found on the downgrading and subsequent reinstatement east of Shipman:  http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va049-060.htm#va56

Per the discussion in the Virginia thread, info was added on VA 158 #3:  http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va141-160.htm#va158

Added the creation month (per CTB minutes) for VA 364 at Occoneechee State Park (just across the river from Clarksville):  http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va361-380.htm#va364

VA 42:  included mention of the error "US 42" in north Harrisonburg.

A mini-content update has occurred at the Virginia Highways Project:

Complete revamp of the following pages, with much more info and mapscans:

VA 81-100 -- http://www.vahighways.com/route-log/va081-100.htm

This is unrelated to the update but apparently CTB still refers to I-495 as VA 413 in its minutes for some reason; they did so in this 2009 meeting (actually calling it Interstate 413 and noting it had been renumbered to I-495).

Announcing a new photography section at the Virginia Highways Project:  Placenames.  If you've ever traveled off the Interstates in Virginia, you've probably seen them...little green signs on the side of the road that display the name of the hamlet, geographical feature, or county line you're passing by.  We're starting with over 200 of these placenames (with plenty more already in the queue):

http://www.vahighways.com/placenames/

We'd also like to announce a placenames scavenger hunt.  If you have a photo of a placename we don't have, or if you have a better image of one already posted, please send it along.  A few guidelines:

- At least 800 pixels in width.
- While this is nominally a sign collection, we prefer photos that show the placename sign in context...such as a view down the road or around the area.
- Include the route(s) involved, direction of travel, county (if known), and date of the photo.

WillWeaverRVA

I will be keeping an eye out for these in the future. I already know of two I can easily get for you.

I have a couple...

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7295/us258sbonjrb10resized.jpg US 258/17 southbound on the James River Bridge entering Isle of Wight County from Newport News.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/2227/kdk0550resized.jpg US 258/17 northbound on the James River Bridge, entering Newport News from Isle of Wight County.

Named bridges aren't mentioned on the site, but it's something we like to do in Hampton (a collection of bridges along and around Mercury Blvd (US 258) are named after Mercury 7 astronauts). http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9618/us258sbathamptonriverbr.jpg Virgil L. Grissom Bridge over the Hampton River on US 258 eastbound in Hampton.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3449/i664sbmmmbt1resized.jpg I-664 southbound in Newport News at the northern end of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel crossing the James River.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6529/i664sbmmmbt4resized.jpg I-664 southbound entering Suffolk from Newport News on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/2765/1002819resized.jpg I-664 northbound in Suffolk at the southern end of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel crossing the James River Bridge.

Those are all of mine that the signs are legible in, resized and ready to post if you want them.

I could use a few of those.  I'd need the dates the photos were taken, though, plus the name you'd prefer to be credited to.

Not what I was referring to earlier, but here is what I've dug up so far:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_vGM7FtU3Pdk/TDz9SnVkHAI/AAAAAAAAD7E/Z29P2D1VEeE/us250_shortpump2.jpg US 250 in Short Pump, in Henrico County. Taken 3/4/09.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_vGM7FtU3Pdk/TDz9venn5xI/AAAAAAAAD7M/htIwLC-mNto/us360_essex-richmond.jpg Probably not what you had in mind, but US 360 crossing the Rappahannock River from Essex County (in Tappahannock) to Richmond County. Taken 5/25/09.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_vGM7FtU3Pdk/TDz9voynT8I/AAAAAAAAD7Q/Kxp6VoLu5TM/s640/us360_richmond-essex.jpg US 360 going the opposite direction. Includes a bonus Tappahannock Corporate Limits sign.

I'll post more as I find them. I have several Richmond City Limits signs, as well.
