Title: I-170 in Baltimore?
Post by: Bigmikelakers on February 10, 2012, 02:30:41 PM
Has anyone heard of this? I never knew of such numbering till I got my 2003 Thomas Guide in the mail yesterday.

Yes, it was another casualty of anti-freeway backlash in Baltimore.

Wikipedia's summary is reasonably accurate. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-170_%28Maryland%29)

As Takumi notes, to get the full story, you'd need to read about Baltimore's freeway revolts. Earl Swift's book The Big Roads talks a lot about Baltimore as being a microcosm of that particular issue in American society.

You can find out more about it without even leaving AARoads (https://www.aaroads.com/guide.php?page=i0170md).  ;-)

It was a designation killed in 1983, but some maps, as I see with your Thomas Guide, and more recently Rand McNally's 2011 road atlas (and 2012...), have resurrected the route.

Just in time for demolition of the freeway to begin . . .

Nope. Only a few blocks at the east end.

Of course it hasn't been signed as I-170 for some time, just as US 40.

At the west end adjacent to the MARC train station.

Yes, I do heard and seen the I-170 in Baltimore, Maryland. I do have 1999 Metropolitan Baltimore and 2002 Baltimore City and County Thomas Guide. Both book still shows I-170 freeway alignment too as well the interstate shield still there on both of my mapbooks.

Which atlases? I've never seen it in RM's.

It is on the Downtown Baltimore inset at the left.
