In Wikimedia Commons, there are categories for views from automobiles in various counties in various states. The one for Polk County, Florida became so overcrowded that I split off categories for views from automobiles in Lakeland, Florida, Winter Haven, Florida, and Auburndale, Florida. The trouble is, I'm still trying to figure out which cities should be the fourth and even fifth ones to be split off.

I am undecided as to who is more annoying: the "High Tide" guy or the "Bundlé/Savé" chick.

I have no idea what any of this means, and I feel like that's a good thing.

Isn't "High Tide" just the latest trend in hating on Alabama Crimson Tide football?

A friend of mine likes that ad because he feels it displays what he considers to be the intelligence of the average Alabama fan (he's a Florida alumnus).

Two rather ubiquitous—and annoying—TV commercials. I don't remember what the first one is selling. The second one is a State Farm ad.

An observation I've had over the years out here in California is that it is infinitely easier to find accurate highway information if what I'm looking for happens to have been constructed prior to 1967.  There is a frustrating public information black hole that exists from that year up into modern times.

The cycle of a typical Mid-South board thread:

1. Controversial massive road project is announced
2. People share great thoughts about it
3. People who have no idea about the project begin to rant about it
4. Thread goes dormant for 6 months
5. A small bit of news breaks about the project (usually not important)
6. Everyone rants again
7. Repeat steps 4-6

I get it that this post is about "stupid person blindly following a GPS."  All the same I'm disappointed in how few people are pointing how awesome of an abandoned bridge this is.

GPS and phone signals get quite sparse out that way. You really need some paper maps out there or you'll get lost...or just give extra time to wander aimlessly until you find a signal. Despite a vast numbered county road system, it doesn't really aid the unfamiliar with navigation.

I didn't bother with reading the comments, I don't feel like wanting to walk into traffic.

Perect! So, looking at the Co Rd 41 end, there is a bridge closed sign, but it is covered up by vegetation as of July, 2024. But, driving in from that direction, there is a obstruction before the bridge.

From the east side near Co Rd 39, the sign clearly states "Bridge Out". So apparently, the FedEx truck was approaching from the east.

It would be good to put in some bollards and turn that into a walking/biking trail. Looks to be a nice area. Too bad we don't know when the bridge was closed, although my guess would be 20 years.

Be that as it may, he does point out some key red flags.

Grass grows up through the 'road' up to a half-mile in advance of the bridge.
There's a big pile of dirt in advance of the bridge.
There are 'lots' of boards missing from the bridge.

If you were a professional delivery driver, then don't you think you might have stopped at some point before the middle of the bridge?

Bold to assume a delivery driver whose job doesn't require a special license is a "professional" anything.

But yes, a reasonable person probably would have deduced at some point that stopping and turning around would have been the optimal decision.

OK, yes, I was once a delivery driver with no experience and no special license, and a few of my customers were down unnamed rural roads.  But I figured the opposite, 'amateur', didn't really fit.  Maybe it does, though...

I should point out that backing up or turning around can be a tall order, depending on how narrow and/or overgrown the road is.

I do wonder though what makes that bridge so impassable?  I would think that it could handle a standard weight vehicle if all the planks were present.  There is a couple similar spans near me that usually have a 4-5 ton weight limit.

I did have a chance to look at the road approaching the bridge on GSV.  From the east there is a house with a yard not too far from the closure.  Approaching from the west is more narrow and would be tricky to pull a turnaround.

I wonder how that FedEx driver would do on California Route 39. Google Maps shows the road going all the way up to CA-2, although to its credit it won't route you along the long-closed section.
