My brothers and sisters have been drinking a lot of Old Fashioneds lately, and I like them on occasion as well.  Without scrolling back, does anybody have any good Old Fashioned recipes, or can direct me to which page of this thread to find one?

"That's just like... your opinion, man."

I picked up a bottle of this rum yesterday, but I haven't opened it yet.  Anyone tried it?

If I'm feeling lazy, some days I just have a sweet vermouth & soda.  Surprisingly good!

Once of my favorite simple ones is a Porto Tonic which is just white port and tonic. Refreshing.

Have you tried a Bénédictine and tonic?  That's now become one of my lazy-staples.

I don't remember the last time I tasted straight Benedictine ( or B&B). Definitely never had with tonic.

Well. Funny how time and tastes change.

Now, at 39 I find my favorites are tequila and gin. I like everything except vodka though. Have in the last couple of years really started to like cognac and bourbon.
Maybe it's due to being a bartender and constantly experimenting and trying new things. But I really like a good cognac. Like Remy Martin 1738, Pierre ferrand, D'Usse, and Hine. Also liking calvados
I love freeways and roads in any state but Texas will always be first in my heart

If you like Calvados and Cognac, have you tried Armagnac? That's my favorite of the three Western European fruit based spirits.

All of this is fine, but I prefer bourbon to brandy and skip the soda.

I am very old school with my old fashioneds. (This is probably posted upthread somewhere.)

2 oz booze (rye, mezcal, and tequila are my favorites)
1/4 oz simple syrup (ideally demerara or brown sugar syrup)
4 dashes of bitters (normally Angostura, but sometimes I mix it up with some other flavors like black walnut)
Citrus twist (normally lemon just since I'm more likely to have one on hand)

Her eyes are up there!!!

You don't have good old fashioneds in Madison - you have them up north.

Brandy >>> whisk(e)y/Bourbon in an old fashioned.  Whisk(e)y or bourbon better off neat.

For my tastes, I'll disagree with your first sentence and agree with your second. An old fashioned is just a slightly sweeter and more bitter version of a neat spirit. Since brandy already has some natural fruitiness (which comes across to me as sweet), I don't need a sweeter version of that. Brandy for me is good for a Sidecar where you're adding some acid to balance it out.

I am going to disagree with you on all three of these counts, but differences are what make the world go around.

When I have brandy, which is pretty rare now, I like it neat.

I like Old Fashioneds but I prefer Manhattans. I actually prefer Brooklyns more, but I've yet to meet a bartender who knows what that is.

You haven't sat at my bar. :)

I just don't find the combo of dry vermouth and whiskey to be appealing to me. Granted, the Luxardo sweetens it up a little bit, but still not my ideal. I also don't like perfect Manhattans for the same reason.
