Mall at Greece Ridge... oof.

Eastview is increasingly the only real mall left in the Rochester area at this point. No wonder there's so much more traffic in Webster during  holiday shopping season.

Nothing about the Macy's in Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw as of yet. I was in that mall about a half hour ago and it just lost the H & M store. I'm guessing that Macy's has about a year left and they will be closing that would also leave this mall with just JCPenney as anchor. Sears closed in both malls in 2018 for Genesee Valley and 2019 for Fashion Square.

JCPenney looks like they are doing ok in both malls too.

The Metro Detroit area is down to 9 malls if someone knows of one I'm missing feel free to add it but I think it's at 9. I believe at the most there were about 14 or 15.

Annnnd Kohl's now wants to join in on the store closing bandwagon:

One interesting footnote on the Kohl's and Macy's closings:

When I listen to audio streams on Live 365...

1) The majority of the ad breaks usually have either a Kohl's or Macy's commercial.  Just like there's usually either a Home Depot or Lowes commercial in the break.

2) Both the Kohl's and Macy's commercials usually just talk about storewide generic  % off sales.

3) Both use generic music beds in their ads.

4) Unless you are paying specific attention to whose ad is playing, both competitor's ads sound exactly the same.

5) If you can't make your company's ads stand out above and beyond your competitor to make them memorable, then it's no wonder you're closing stores!  This goes for all radio advertisers that resort to the most simple, vanilla-sounding ads.

Interestingly, 10 of the Kohl's closures are in California. No other state has more than two.

And the Kohl's/Macy's comp is interesting. I know this has no basis in reality but they seem more like sister companies than direct competitors, almost like Trader Joe's/Aldi where they're pretty similar but one sells more expensive brands/products and appeals to a slightly more upscale audience.

Also Kohl's are usually located in shopping plazas (and for that reason have more of a "common man" appeal, at least IMO) while Macy's is usually located in an actual mall, often as an anchor store.

Not as big of news but Game Stop is closing in Bay City and Midland. The Bay City Mall is has almost nothing in it. There might be 10 stores open inside the mall but the Midland Mall is doing a lot better with all their anchors filled with something, Bay City Mall has no anchors left after JCPenney closed about 5 years ago.

Kohl's seemed to always "oversell" the value of their deals and then their stores have always been a mess.

Why shop brick and mortar when there's Amazon with easy returns?

Genesee Valley is a mall that I have walked around in a lot. It's going to be strange without Macy's there which was originally Hudson's of course. I was just in that mall on Wednesday and it's about 50/50 as far as the shape it's in. This mall already has two empty anchor spaces and the food court is completely shut down.

I'm not too surprised about the Plainfield, IL closure.  There are Kohl's stores within 10-12 miles in all four cardinal directions while it's just down the street from a Walmart closure (one apparently killed by the Meijer there).

Quote from: Flint1979 on January 09, 2025, 06:14:54 PMThe Macy's store at Oakland Mall, Lakeside Mall, Grand Traverse Mall and Genesee Valley Mall will all be closing in March. Genesee Valley will only have JCPenney as an anchor store after this happens.
Oakland will also only have JCPenney as a traditional anchor. The space that Sears formally was in is shared by Hobby Lobby and At Home.

Post offices are zoos now because they are the return center for much of e-commerce. Their locations and parking lots aren't designed for all that traffic. Some towns of decent size only have one post office. If you return a lot you have to set up a small shipping department in your home.

Great it's nice to see a Michigan based business knock out a Walmart.

Yeah the only thing is there is no mall entrance to either store. Bay City did something like that too with the former Sears space, it was Younkers Home & Furniture then it got divided up by Dunham's (moved from a space inside the mall), Ollie's and Planet Fitness.

Listen to this about Dunham's, the Saginaw store used to be located in the mall but moved several years ago to a space in a strip mall across the street from the mall that used to be Kids R' Us. They are closing because their rent was going to increase from $60,000 a year to $150,000 a year and Ross Dress For Less came in and offered $150,000 a year for the space that was already occupied by Dunham's.

*shrug*

Haven't had this problem, myself.  Lots of options around here to return Amazon purchases that go awry.

Have to say that my returns on clothing has gone down over the years as online merchants have tightened up their game (at least the reliable ones).

Kox River Mall near my hometown of Appleton, WI is in a VERY precarious position, too, with two already closed anchors (a Sears and a Younkers) and the other three being  Macy's, JCPenney and a Target.  The township that it is in is also notorious for recklessly spending verrry little on public works (this to keep their tax rate below the adjacent city to prevent annexations), so the area around it is becoming noticeably and embarrassingly threadbare.

I know it did it closed at the end of June. Macy's and JCPenney have remained open though.
