It's a tricky problem because there's a lot of these and a lot of us don't know all of them. A key point is that the American MUTCD doesn't allow anything but unaccented Latin characters on guide signs, meaning that 99% of potential plays will be unaccented Latin characters.


  • That makes it fairly easy to say that letters with diacritics (like Ã,, É, Ö, or Ş) should be treated as though they had no diacritics (like A, E, O, or S), as the MUTCD would do.
  • "Convenience" letters which in their native language have a substitution into base Latin characters should be treated as using the substitution. e.g. German ß → ss, Norwegian Ã... → Aa, etc.
  • The big question is what to do with letters that English doesn't have. I think in this case the person making the play should specify what the expected continuation is. If you don't know, then don't post that photo.

You could just make things easier by avoiding plays that no one will know what to do with.
