So I was in KC this morning, and was driving down I-635 and US 69 south when I noticed something weird. MoDOT has decided to, for some reason, sign US 169 as following this alignment.

Yet, I think US 169 is still signed along the independent alignment just to the east, and I noticed no corresponding signage of this move in KCK.
What the freakin' heck?
It should be the second one. I drove it a few weeks back. I don't know why it's signed like that. there haven't been any changes in MO and KS that I know of.
Wouldn't a change like that have to be approved by AASHTO? Speaking of, I think they had their meeting yesterday so I guess we'll see if there is any applications for that change.
Well I first thought it was a really old mistake that they haven't bothered to clean up (since the 169 shield on 635 was yellow and rusty), but they just redid the 69/635 interchange last? year and that was a brand spanking new 169 sign right there.
I mean, the I-29 traffic time VMSes still said "169 HWY - 2 minutes" at the I-635 exit... why Missouri must you make no sense.
Did you take an hour driving both roads to see what's up? If not you're not suitably hardcore.
The Fairfax bridge/I-635 routing of US 169 is an > 20 year old routing. 169 was moved to the Broadway Extension in Missouri when the tolls were removed from the Broadway (now also know and the Buck O'Neill) Bridge in the early 90s.
The US 169 shield at 635 was left in place. The original US 169 shield on the southbound approach to the Fairfax Bridge was eventually removed, but apparently when they built the new bridge, they copied a sign plan that showed a US 169 shield.

OK thanks. That explains why the shield on 635 looked like it was going to chemically decay at any second.
