Recently while in the Bay Area I drove the entirety of the Warren Freeway on CA 13 and small connection via Ashby Avenue from I-80/I-580 in Berkeley to CA 123 (Old US 40).  The Warren Freeway segment of CA 13 is actually pretty scenic climbing as it climbs a ridge from I-580 to CA 24.  The real interesting part of CA 13 was that CA 24 actually stayed signed on Ashby Avenue and Tunnel Road until 1970.  I find that interesting given the Legislative Route switched from 206 to 13 during the 1964 State Highway renumbering but yet remained part of a signed CA 24 for several more years.

My photo set for the Warren Freeway can be found here:

So...these recent two trips are really fleshing out my inventory of former CA 24 segments.  I'm working on revamping the CA 24 blog to incorporate something regarding the 1935 scope of the route with links to former segments I've covered.

From what I've heard through Division of Highwas/Caltrans lore through my cousins who have worked for the agency, the original post-renumbering plan for CA 24 was to simply route it down East Broadway (the original LRN 75) to I-580, where it would terminate.  But since the CA 24 (and part of present I-980) freeway was in the construction phase back in '64 (they were just clearing property back then) -- and the city of Oakland had raised concerns about any additional traffic down Broadway, it was decided to keep CA 24 on Ashby Ave. until the freeway was opened to traffic.  Since the 24 freeway wasn't a stand-alone project but built in conjunction with the Concord and Richmond BART lines, the construction period lasted for close to 8 years; the Ashby signage change from CA 24 (which actually retained many black-on-white '57-spec shields) to CA 13 didn't actually occur until 1973.

I made some significant updates to the existing California State Route 13/Warren Freeway blog.  The blog now contains information drawn from the California Highways & Public Works showing the details of the cooperative construction of Legislative Route Number 227/Warren Boulevard Freeway through the 1950s and 1960s.  Given the Warren Boulevard Freeway was a cooperative effort between the Division of Highways, Alameda County and the City of Oakland the amount of information found in the California Highways & Public Works is surprisingly sparse compared to other freeways from the era.  The blog also now has the full route photo log with California State Route 13 beyond the Warren Freeway on Tunnel Road and Ashby Avenue.
