Radio Shack files Chapter 11, stores to close

Company-owned stores to be sold to General Wireless, which is Sprint's largest shareholder. Click below for the story:

Near the end of the story, there's also a link to the stores that are closing.

I'm not really surprised at about Radio Shack going the way of the do-do bird. I'm only surprised they were still around this long.

It sounds odd at first, but technology killed Radio Shack.

In the past, Radio Shack was the place you went to for electronic parts - capacitors and resistors and the like. Or odd audio cables and adapters. Maybe a TV antenna and coax cable.

Then everything went digital and wireless and disposable. Today, there is nothing that Radio Shack sells in a store that I cannot get elsewhere - and likely get cheaper.

Had they consolidated stores some time ago, they might have been able to salvage themselves.

At this point, the vultures are beginning to circle, waiting for the inevitable markdowns and clearance sales.

I was confused when I read that General Wireless was going to put Sprint stores in many of those company-owned stores - and that the Sprint 'store' would only take up about 30% of the floor space. What are they going to do with the remainder?

Video killed the Radio Shack? ;)

There are 4 franchise stores in NW Arkansas that will remain open. Fayetteville has been there since the early 1970's.

Fort Smith is losing one store next to Target, but keeping the store in Central Mall.

The one store near my house made the list.

Its a shame, as they have been in business for years and The place to go at one time for electronic needs.

I didn't see the one in Hillsborough or in Trenton on that list, so that's interesting.

Missoula's Radio Shack store is long gone well before the Chapter 11 was even filed. There was one next to the China Buffet at the Holiday Village plaza on Brooks, then I think one in the Southgate Mall, but has since never existed in Missoula since at least the 2000's.
Finally upgraded to Expressway after, what, seven or so years on this forum? Took a dadgum while, but, I made it!

I bought my CB radio from them.  Their brand name was Realistic on all of their products.  If I ever needed wiring for my stereos or adapters I always went there as well.  Even my second to last cell phone I bought from them.

Another icon gone.

Wow it is sad.

I guess it was inevitable, though, when even the hard core Radio Shack patrons like myself only shopped there for medium ticket items every other year or so (4 radio scanners and 3 Garmin GPS's in the last 15 years) and maybe twice a year at most for some connector or wire that I needed. Looking back on it now, I don't believe I stepped foot in a Radio Shack in all of 2014.

I was in a Radio Shack just this past Thursday night. Before, I was last there maybe late summer or early fall. There used to be a Radio Shack a mile from my house, but it and a couple of other businesses were torn down to make way for a CVS.

Posted this in another thread, but it's too damn topical (and funny) not to post a second time.  Got to love The Onion!

FORT WORTH, TX–Despite having been on the job for nine months, RadioShack CEO Julian Day said Monday that he still has "no idea" how the home electronics store manages to stay open.

"There must be some sort of business model that enables this company to make money, but I'll be damned if I know what it is," Day said. "You wouldn't think that people still buy enough strobe lights and extension cords to support an entire nationwide chain, but I guess they must, or I wouldn't have this desk to sit behind all day."

Funny how the chain that had the slogan "You've got questions; we've got answers" cannot address its own financial troubles...to which the only answer would be closing many of its stores. And it's no surprise that Best Buy and all the wireless stores are selling the same products at better prices.

Interesting, the store near my house is not on the list of stores to be closed.

The store closest to me closed about 4 months ago, but amazingly two others close to me - one in a traditional mall, one in a strip mall, are both not on the list of stores to close.

There's one store listed in a large shopping center I pass by all the time and never knew it was in there!

Chris Hayes of MSNBC just made reference of this article. They also showed an old Radio Shack commercial selling one of the earliest cell phones for $2495.00.

The Store in Hunters Creek, FL has already sold a lot of stuff as many of the shelves are empty already.  All cell phones are gone already and empty enough of the store that sound travels through the floor space.

Got a $10 Tee Shirt for only a buck fifty, though.  So now is the chance to grab stuff that you need at reduced prices while it lasts.

Here in Quebec, we referred sometimes RadioShack as "RadioScrap" as shown in this French skit by a group of humorists.

I'm an Engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like "What is beauty?", because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems and call them "paychecks".

When the hulking, grey, monochrome TRS-80s arrived in my life, I was so... disappointed.  Computers on TV were so much friendlier.

The Radio Shack closest to my house will be one of the stores that gets closed, despite it being open for half of a year to a year at most so far.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.
