A sad and shocking day in sports...and the world when you really think about it.  One of the greatest human beings the world has ever seen has expired at a very young age of only 58 years.  He is considered one of the greatest defenders in basketball history, I believe third (3rd) all-time in career shot-blocking.  He has been to two NBA Finals in 2001 (Sixers) and 2003 (Nets) within a three-season span.  The most memorable of him was when he was with the Denver Nuggets in 1994 Playoffs, when his hands firmly clamped on the ball on the floor at Key Arena in Seattle after his OT win -- the first time in NBA history when a #8 seed won the first round.  He wrapped up his playing career with my Houston Rockets in 2009.

Off the court, his impact was even more resounding.  He gave back to the community with everything he had, spearheading education and health-care in his homeland of Congo.  He left a legacy of bringing all the greatness  life had to offer with his personality, intelligence, and athletic ability.

If there is any person that deserves a statue in his honor, it was him.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

You got just two details wrong: Mutombo was second in career blocked shots, with only Hakeem Olajuwon having more. And in 1994, Key Arena was called the Seattle Center Coliseum, with the Key Arena name not coming until it had been renovated one year later.

At least Mutombo lived long enough to see Nikola Jokic finish what he had started, by winning a championship in Denver last year.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!
