Brandon Aubrey was pretty sure being the kicker for the Dallas Cowboys was going to get him out of jury duty.

It's safe to say he was surprised to end up serving on a domestic violence case that lasted a week and ended with his jury sentencing the defendant to 65 years in prison.

"Eye-opening, long, frustrating, depressing, hearing the story," Aubrey said Thursday in an interview conducted by a member of the Cowboys' media relations staff. "The story was a sad one. I don't really want to get into all the details of the story, but it was very depressing and dragged on longer than anybody expected it to. So, glad it's over."

What I found weird is, if I understood it right, the team's media relations team did an interview of their own player, then released a transcript of it to the general media. Sounds so Jerry Jones-like that he wouldn't let the media talk to the player directly

In D.C., even U.S. Supreme Court justices aren't let off the hook for jury duty. (At least the ones who live in the District, which has a lot of jury trials, and can't be choosy about who serves. The ones who live in the suburbs have it easier.)

Even California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. didn't attempt to get out of jury duty. He was actually picked and served. He was elected Foreman. I think that it was even a criminal trial which is kind of a conflict, since he would have been able to issue a pardon, if the accused person could have been convicted.

I would think that his SIL being a prosecutor would be the most disqualifying factor.  It's just one of the trappings of being a USA citizen.  (At least he wasn't sequestered in a different county for a complex multi-month trial.)

Fun fact about Brandon: he played soccer in college, at Notre Dame. Had never played football. After his brief pro soccer career ended, he was at home watching football with his wife. When they saw a kicker miss a field goal, she told him he should become a kicker.

So he did, and he's arguably the best right now.
