I guess I need to know what you mean by "home town." The Yankees and Dodgers, and to some extent the Cubs, have a more national fanbase.  But I don't think the Cardinals have much of a following outside of their geographic area...and ditto with the Red Sox. Obviously completely anecdotal, but I don't know if I have ever met a Red Sox fan who doesn't have some sort of connection with New England.
I'm confused here too. Maybe the Yankees and Dodgers but the rest of the teams I don't see. The Cubs are only as popular as they are because of WGN, back in the day of course. I mean I even watched them when I came home from school in the 1990's and I was never a Cubs fan I simply watched to listen to Harry Caray's drunk ass announce the game. Also out of all the Red Sox fans I've met and chatted with all of them have had some kind of connection to New England as well here.

I'm also surprised there aren't more Cubs and Braves fans out there in up-for-grabs country because of cable games in the 1980s. And to a lesser extent Met fans because those were on national cable too but not in the area I lived.

Back before the 1993 expansion, if you were a Cardinals or Pirates fan and had WWOR, you could potentially watch them 48 times (not counting national network broadcasts).Of course, gold ol' Buck and Shannon were good for all 162.

I was always under the impression, hat the Cubs-Whitesox line was at I-88 and its logical continuations. while the Whitesox-Cardinals line was around Bloomington/Normal, IL, maybe halfway between there and Lincoln, IL.

Also, I'm under the impression that the Brewers-Tigers line in Michigan is around where the Packers-Lions line is, about halfway between US 41 and I-75.

I think Springfield is where Cardinals territory starts.

Orange County, CA (and some of Riverside/San Bernardino counties) would normally be hardcore Angels fans. For as horrendously run the team has been over the past 10 years, the fan base is still very loyal. But right now, the Dodgers and the Padres are definitely the "it" teams in Southern California.

It might be interesting to see the fan dynamic change in Northern California and Nevada over the next few years due to the A's moving to Sacramento and then Las Vegas. I can see why they didn't show up on the map here because the fans protested their ownership and threat to move. But I wonder if a "revival" in Sacramento could convert some more fans.

In my opinion, they should've moved to Vegas and played temporarily at Las Vegas Ballpark just so they can warm up a new fan base. The temporary Sacramento move just seems like a last-minute guilt trip grab for Northern California fan support.
