The position of the currency sign depends a lot on the language being spoken. In English-speaking countries, it usually goes in front. However, in other languages this is not the case; according to Wikipedia the dollar sign goes after the number in French Canada. Likewise, in the eurozone, some languages place the € in front and some after.

Interestingly, the Cape Verdean escudo places its currency symbol in the middle, that is, where the decimal place goes. This is a $2.50 coin:

Using a unit as a decimal marker is known to happen in French as well.

Correction–that's a Portuguese escudo, which stopped being a thing when Portugal changed to the euro. Cape Verde used to be part of Portugal, however, and maintained the practice after independence (whereas I don't have any source saying that Portugal transferred it to the euro).

Blame whoever created ASCII. The keys we can normally type are exactly the ASCII set of characters, minus the ones for internal use (and British keyboards don't have `). Fortunately, as I'm using a Mac, I can just type option+4 to get ¢.

Having examined the matter further, for reasons I can’t really explain, it appears that Portugal has issued coins with the € symbol in both positions:



Now, that second coin, as it turns out, is noncirculating. And so, if I had to guess, there’s some EU regulation somewhere stating how to use the € symbol on official coinage, which wouldn’t apply to the second coin.

Those of use who develop software use curly braces and pipe symbols all the time.  Depends what you're using the computer for   And as stated before I can get the ¢ symbol with option-4 on a Mac keyboard.

This reminds me: Why do so many countries use a comma to separate digits in a price number? It makes no sense. A decimal looks much cleaner, and commas already have a separate meaning in sentence structure. I read "$2,50" as "This item is 2...(awkward pause)....50."
