During the early days of Oregon Interstate 80N, there were swaths of Super 2 sections that persisted for years until at least 1980. Are there any photos of these early sections?

Do you know their general locations? There might be photos in the Oregon State Archives or respective county archives.
Interstate 80N should have been Interstate 82 (as originally proposed) and existing Interstate 82 should have been Interstate 7, 9, 11, or 13.

Current I-82 serves an east-west purpose, so it is not suited for an odd number, as explained several times on this subforum.
If I had a nickel for every time someone whined about I-82 not being an odd number, I'd be rich.
Guess I-76 in Colorado should be renumbered to a N/S route, because it connects east-west I-70 to east-west I-80...
I-80N super-two photos (2 of them, near Baker and Ontario) can be found in FLICKR; search under "Notre Dame Glee Club" album. This portrays Notre Dame trip to Seattle in 1965. These super-two photos are intermixed with numerous other (albeit non-highway) photos in this album, so you'll have to pick them out. I did not attach them because I don't know copyright status. Also, there is a You-Tube video depicting a 1962 trip to the Seattle World's Fair. It shows an I-80N super-two segment near Weatherby, Oregon.
Additional info regarding I80N super 2: See YouTube video, "Vintage Roadtrips - 1962 Seattle World's Fair." Starting at 4:00, you will see I80N crossing from Idaho to Oregon, then going from Ontario on to Huntington. Some super-2, some 3-lane. Also, further on, you'll see vintage 80N (with guardrail divider) somewhere near LaGrande, possibly along the Grand Ronde River at Perry; not sure though. Also, some shots descending 3-lane Cabbage Hill, and the Junction with Oregon 11 at the foot of the grade.

In the Ontario photo, I noticed the N was squeezed below the 80 in the 2di shield. Was this the practice for suffixed routes at the time? (The reason for my asking was that normally, I'd expect the entire designation to be shown on a 3di shield, instead of what was in said photo.)

Are you thinking of another freeway across Wyoming, connecting Pocatello to Buffalo (or Casper?), to carry your new I-80?

I once had a 1977 Oregon State Highway Map with a picture of the newly opened Tooth Rock Tunnel Bypass, which carries westbound traffic and allowed the tunnel to carry only eastbound traffic. Prior to that point, the tunnel carried two-way traffic, so any picture of the tunnel back then would qualify.
