Saw some photos on Twitter of the aftermath of a tornado in Andover, KS (just east of Wichita). Looks really bad.

I live on the east side of Wichita.

My wife and I had dropped our eldest son off at a church retreat near Santa Fe Lake, which is a few miles east of Andover.  I had had my parents pick up our two younger boys for the night, so my wife and I could have a night to ourselves (our anniversary was a week before that, and all five of us going out to a Chinese buffet didn't cut it for an anniversary celebration).

We were in a bar in the basement of the Ambassador Hotel, downtown Wichita, when everyone's cell phones started going off with weather alerts.  But, in the basement, nobody had any data coverage to find out details.  After a gentlemen at the next table over from us had gone upstairs a couple of times, I asked his wife if she knew any details, and she said the tornado was somewhere near Andover.  Oh, gee, great! we thought:  that's were our son was, at a church camp, with who-knows-what storm shelter.  But, on the other hand, he was in good hands, and there was nothing we could do about it anyway.

We finished our date, drove home through pouring rain and hail and high winds and arrived home without even knowing exactly where the tornado had gone through.  We texted our youth pastor, and he eventually replied that they had taken shelter but were out of the path of the storm.  I heard later that it had been headed toward them but turned away to the north, and it missed them by about three miles.  Our son told us later that they were trying to watch a video session that evening and had to stop it to take shelter, then came back from sheltering and started up the video again, then had to stop it again and shelter again.  The goal that night was to have lights out at 11pm but, because everyone was so amped up after the storm, our youth pastor basically said "screw it" and just let everyone play games till 2am instead.

The mother of one of the children in my wife's home daycare works as a vet in Andover, and we saw on the news that her vet clinic is offering to kennel and treat any pets that have been affected or displaced by the storm, free of charge.  I heard on the radio that cleanup efforts are now being coordinated through a local church in Andover.

More than 1000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, yet–as far as I know–there were no deaths.

No, but I was making sure you are OK cause that system was atrocious!  :D

Yes, as far as I'm aware, nobody I personally know had any damage done except maybe to a fence or something.

The heat is starting to hit the afterburners here. 85 degrees, low wind, and pretty humid generally this weekend. This week will steadily warm up to 94 or so by next Saturday (coincidentally, I have to referee that day. Water breaks for all!). And other than the inch or so we got last week, we haven't gotten any rainfall; and not much is forecast.

The tornadic cell has turned due east, meaning it's passing far south of me. However, there's a big line of severe (currently non-tornadic) storms coming in at the same time.

My damaging storm turned out to be a non-event at our house.  No hail at all, and the sun is already out.

Straight-line winds gusting to 70 mph coming into Norman now. No tornado threat at this time, although our sirens were blowing for about 5 minutes or so.

This is unreal!  In my home state of Texas, tonight's lows ranging from upper 20s in Stratford to upper 70s along the south coast at the same hours, and then tomorrow's highs ranging from upper 60s way up north, and triple-digits in Laredo, further driving our point: Never generalize Texas weather....warm in one end and frigid on the other end.  By the way, the unreal part is that tonight's lows are 15 degrees below normal for the northern end.

In other news:  Of the April daily highest locations, one occurred in Arizona, seven in California, and 22 in Texas.  The highest of which was a tie:  111 degrees in both McAllen (on April 6th) and Falcon Lake (April 13th) in Texas.
We're so far south that we're not even considered "The South"

Yesterday Atlanta had a high in the upper 80s with dewpoints in the low 60s. Gross. I was not ready for sticky summer yet. More of the same for the rest of this week, too.

Meanwhile in Utah, Salt Lake City had a severe thunderstorm warning for 70 mph winds associated with showers along a cold front yesterday. From what I’m hearing, there were several measured severe-level wind gusts and damage reports scattered around the valley, and now there’s even some snow in the higher valley areas.

7/8

Currently 11C (52F) and raining. We're expected to get 20-30mm (0.8-1.2") of rain this evening.

Looks like it got down to 31 overnight, but on its way to 63.

Rainy and gloomy today. Very un Colorado-like.

Got some surprise thunderstorms last night around 2 AM in Atlanta. They were fun for about 5 minutes, and then I got sick of the thunder as I was trying to sleep.

To expand: this area has been in the 50s quite often for the last two months, starting before it should have gotten there and still going on even after it should have ended.

High risk in the near future?

Doubtful; they rarely revise the risk categories this close to the start of an event. Actually, I think they only issue new convective outlooks at 0600Z and 1200Z (and maybe 1800Z), so there isn't time for another update before the event starts.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of northern...
western...central...and southern Oklahoma...and western north
Texas.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight...

.Thunderstorms...
Several rounds of severe storms continue to be possible through
early Thursday.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening
with severe storms likely. The highest potential for severe
weather is in parts of southwest Oklahoma and western north Texas.
Hail up to the size of baseballs and damaging winds are possible
this afternoon and evening. There is also the potential for
tornadoes this afternoon and evening with a medium risk generally
along and south of I-40 but the highest potential is expected in
parts of southwest Oklahoma and western north Texas.

Severe storms will then be possible later this evening into
Thursday as a cold front moves across the area. Damaging winds and
hail up to the size of ping pong balls will be possible with this
activity. A tornado or two embedded in this line of storms can not
be ruled out but the higher chances for tornadoes will be with the
earlier activity previously mentioned.

Conditions will continue to change throughout the day so check the
forecast often for the latest information and stay weather aware.

.Heavy Rain...
Dangerous flash flooding may accompany heavy rainfall today through
tonight.
