That's certainly a scenic route, but it doesn't sound as if it was the most direct routing you could have taken.

QuoteI had an epiphany that US 74  must've been extended in the 1980's to give the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway one continuous number to help alleviate the confusion of all the concurrency changes (US 19/23/129/441)

It also allowed North Carolina to eliminate US 19A, but I don't understand why it's an unsigned concurrency on I-75 in Tennessee. It's not even signed on the exit from northbound I-75.

Oh it was about 2 hours longer than the fastest way (via US 321, I-26, I-81, I-40) but it allowed me to clinch both US 74 and I-24, as I have driven all of US 74 over the years, and I-24 from Nashville to I-57 in 2016.

I recommend the last portion. It's scenic and you go through Encyclopedia Brown's hometown of Idaville.

I just got one of my last souvenirs from the trip (I still have some pics to pick up at CVS.) A $5 toll bill for crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge. I thought that they forgot by now :).

Is this supposed to be a continuous thread recording (by the willing) our latest road trips? Like, whenever we take one, we should post it here, if we want to?

If so, here's mine. It wasn't very long (about 70-75 miles total), but I'd been wanting to go for a while and finally found the effort to do it.

It was a short-ish trip to the shortest concurrency in Iowa, the one-block IA-17/210 concurrency in Madrid. I also inspected the east end of IA-44 at IA-141, which is severely lacking in Hwy 44 signage and is something I should really write the Iowa DOT about. Seriously, if you get off at the IA-44 exit from 141, there's no IA-44 signs on the ramps or 44 itself until you've gone west out of Grimes and into Dallas County. That's unacceptable, IMO.

Basically I'm considering anything that's overnight to "road trip"  territory.   If I posted some of day trips I'd do this would get out of control fast with seeing CA 41, 180 and 99 constantly.

Did you find this to be a better routing than going to Abingdon and hitting I-81 there? A former co-worker of mine used to make a semi-annual or annual trip to the DC area (where he had lived for years; he was a key figure in a historical moment in November 1963) and he would go to Abingdon and then journey up I-81 to I-66. At least one of his semi-annual trips involved a departure from the Hazard area, which is only about an hour from Wise County, so it made sense. When enough improvements were made to US 40 in western Maryland to make it a viable option, he started using I-79, the former US 48 (now I-68) and I-70 when leaving from home. I'm curious as to why you hung a left at Hansonville instead of a right.

Typically, I'll go to Abingdon and hit I-81 only if I'm planning to use I-77 south from the Wytheville/Fort Chiswell area. If going to Roanoke, I'll usually use US 460 from Pikeville. The segment of US 19 between Hansonville and Claypool Hill is usually only for roadgeeking purposes.

Again, any particular reason for this routing vs. staying on I-81?

Basically I’m considering anything that’s overnight to “road trip” territory.   If I posted some of day trips I’d do this would get out of control fast with seeing CA 41, 180 and 99 constantly.

Thing is, most of my road trips are single-day adventures; rarely do I go on trips that last more than one day. I also, on the grand scheme of things, don't go on very many trips, period, which in general is almost certainly a factor in whether or not a trip is worth posting. Before the Madrid trip, which I posted above, was my MN-110 trip, which did involve an overnight and almost certainly worth including, but not sure I can totally recount all the highways I traveled for that one anymore (it will be precisely one month ago on Friday.)

Also, it's worth noting that almost everyone is going to have the same few first highways with any trip. For me, for example, any trip going west, north, or east is going to involve I-235, and any trip south is going to involve Iowa 5. That's just a fact of the matter about where I live.
