The WB 12 to EB 90 maneuver is going to require either an illegal U-turn at Avenue B in Chicago or a brief stretch along city streets. I don't particularly mind entering a different state just for that, but if you want to get around this, just take 12 west to 41 south.

I guess since the entrance ramp to EB 90 is in Illinois, US 12 west to US 41 south would technically be the proper path.

I knew Kentucky would be a challenge to map out. What I did was start in the state's northeastern corner and go clockwise. My rules were that no backtracking is allowed, which makes it impossible to fully trace Kentucky's border and that will be pointed out, state highways only, and use the state routes that are closest to the border. Also, no going out of state other than state-line roads, which slightly altered one turn. I suspect this routing would take four days at least to drive, especially since in a lot of cases it's rather indirect and uses roads of questionable quality.

(EDIT: based on an idea gleaned from Sparker's followup about driving the route, I'm going to indicate what I've actually been on. A BOLD post means I have driven the entire segment mentioned. A RED post means I have driven on a portion of the segment. A normal post means I have not driven the route.)

Here, I ran into a problem. The reconstruction of US 127 moved the US 127-TN 111 intersection into Kentucky, and the US 127-KY 1076 intersection into Tennessee. Had I stayed with KY 1076 to US 127, it would have crossed the state line, albeit briefly and unmarked, so I chose not to count it.

Here, we run into our first real problem with being unable to parallel the state line. KY 144 intersects KY 2830, which is the old alignment of US 60, but the route runs under a bridge that carries US 60 without an intersection. You can either use KY 144 to get to US 60, or you can stay on KY 2830, which intersects US 60 closer to the US 231 bridge, but here it's physically impossible to stay closest to the state line without doing some backtracking. I chose to use US 60 as the perimeter route.

Holy shit, HB!  I think you've set a new definition for exhaustive!  I guess when most of the traversable roads in a state are in fact state-maintained & signed, such a list is inevitable with the parameters of the OP. 

I have my doubts about whether anyone would even be willing to actually drive it -- but if someone does, please supply equally exhaustive pictures!

I have my doubts about whether anyone would even be willing to actually drive it -- but if someone does, please supply equally exhaustive pictures!

Actually, it would have been possible to better follow some of the contours using county roads (and city streets in some places; namely Paducah, Henderson, Owensboro and Louisville) but I chose to stick with state routes shown on the individual KYTC county maps. Not all of the routes may be signed but they're all listed as state routes. (I suspect the KY 667 entry is gravel or worse, since it basically serves farms along the river).

It is possible to do a much more simple routing to follow the perimeter of the state, but at the cost of not being as close to the state line as is possible.

And believe it or not, I've actually driven a decent amount of this routing, although obviously not in one fell swoop. I ought to go back and highlight the routes I have driven all or a portion of.

I'd like to try doing Kentucky on the outside of the state, but it wouldn't be as easy -- or as close to the state border, because from Tennessee I'd have to cross into Missouri on I-155.  :-D

New York, meanwhile, is physically impossible to do from outside the state.  Even ignoring the coast and going through Canada requires going all the way to Detroit thanks to Lake Erie.

Google maps is incorrect regarding IN 111.  It does not go all the way to Laconia.  It dead ends at New Boston on the Ohio River (I've driven it before and the road that Google maps has labeled as IN 111 between New Boston and Laconia is in fact a county road.)  So my original routing of IN 11 -> IN 211 -> IN 11 is necessary.

Also IN 111 no longer continues through New Albany via Main/Vincennes/Grant Line.  It ends at I-64.

OK, I'm taking a crack at the outer perimeter of Kentucky. Source for the routes is Google Maps. Two rules of note: I did not include West Virginia "county" routes, nor did I include Missouri secondary lettered routes. I also did not include Virginia secondary routes. However, I did include Tennessee's secondary routes, signed inside triangles, because they were part of the single state system until routes were divided into two classes in the 1980s.

As before, I will note segments I have completed in their entirety in BOLD. An entry in RED indicates I have driven part of it.

Starting as I did for Kentucky, in the northeast, but at the intersection of US 23 and US 52 in Portsmouth, Ohio:

I see plenty of posts about clinching certain highways or roads, but I haven't yet seen anything about clinching a state's perimeter. To me, this would mean driving all of a state's highways that are closest to, and parallel to each of the state's borders. I would only include state, US, and Interstate highways, as I think trying to drive the closest back road would be far too complicated. I would also keep from crossing state lines. In some instances, certain stretches of highways would be missed, as there is no way to get to them without crossing a state line.

I want to do this with my 'old man'! This sounds like fun for a road trip around the state!  :wow: :-o :awesomeface:

Thanks for the info. I should have pulled out the old RMcN. It doesn't show 111 going to Laconia. As for the terminus of 11 in New Albany, I tried looking for signs in GSV, but couldn't confirm or deny that it continued past I-64.

At least I got IN 32 and 28 right at Union City. I've been there many times, so I knew what I was talking about that time.

A truer perimeter drive would require traversing through NW Montana on US 2/MT 56/MT 200/MT 135/I-90/US 93, being allowed to use the US-89/WYO 239 connection to Idaho 34, and then being allowed to dip into Utah via Is-15 and -84. It should also be noted that despite what Google seems to be displaying today, Idahos 37 and 38 don't connect and Idaho 81 does not go all the way to the Utah line.
