Has INDOT decided on a number (if any) for that tail end of I-164?

The map on the ORX website is showing it as an extension of the Veterans Memorial Parkway, so it may not be signed with a number at this point.

knowing indot it will become part of a rerouted us 41   :-D

It wouldn't be the first time a numbered interstate became a named municipal roadway.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

INDOT would have to offer A LOT to give US 41 to Evansville and Vanderburgh County. I think it's safe there for the time being. Very likely that the Veterans Memorial Parkway gets extended to I-69.

I see three potential ways US 41 could end up on the orphaned section of interstate:
  • INDOT reroutes US 41 and downgrades existing US 41 through Evansville to a state x41 (probably 941).  Difficulties with Kentucky prevent routing US 41 away from the current alignment through Henderson.
  • INDOT and Kentucky downgrade existing 41 to a business route between Veterans Parkway and the trumpet interchange south of Henderson to compensate for the downgrading of the exsting river crossing to a single bridge.
  • US 41 gets shifted to use the I-69 Ohio River crossing, with Alt 41 getting extended through Henderson and into Indiana.

I think perhaps its being over thought.

US-41 wont change and still traverse the old bridge and direct traffic up through the center of town.

I69 west of the new interchange will become IN-641 or IN-369 all the way back to its terminus at the Lloyd.

silverback1065

I was thinking more that 41 would go on 64 to 69 multiplex with 69, then over onto the stub to get back to its old alignment to go into Kentucky. I see them actually getting rid of 57, not 41. 57 is useless now.

IN-57 is for the airport south of I-64.

IN-57 is for farm and local traffic north of I-64.

Co-signing it with I-69 for a whole 4 miles *is* kind of odd.

I agree that US 41 is probably not going to change.

INDOT only owns/maintains I-69 until about 2/3 mile west of the US 41 overpass. The City of Evansville then owns/maintains Veterans Memorial Pkwy, Riverside Dr, and Fulton Ave. Veterans turns into Riverside Dr at the museum, and Riverside Dr turns into Fulton Ave at the curve by the LST.

I agree they probably designate that stub west of the new interchange as (unsigned) IN-369 or something for inventory purposes. My guess is they just sign the stub as Veterans Mem Pkwy. Anything more would just be unnecessarily complicated IMO.

none of these are good reasons to maintain it still. the county can take that job over. the airport abuts us 41 anyway so that piece of 57 is redundant.

The airport may abut 41, but its entrance is on 57, which on its own is reason enough in my mind to keep it a state highway. There are also several distribution centers (Amazon, Frito-Lay and Shoe Carnival, to name a few) and businesses which are located along that part of 57. It's most certainly not redundant to them - that's their link to I-69.

I-55

Fort Wayne's airport is 3.5 miles to I-469 and 5.5 miles to I-69 with no state maintained connection to either. Evansville's entrance is less than a mile from US 41. Removing that portion of 57 is well within reason for airports. On the other hand, can't say the locals are ready to take on 8 miles of 57 as well as whatever they get from 69

INDOT just dropped their final update video for the project:

Also the reduced speed limits for construction on I 465 and I 69 will be removed by January 15.

QuoteThe speed limit on all sections of I-69 and I-465 is expected to transition to 55 mph on or after Wednesday, Jan. 15. Intermittent lane and speed reductions will be possible along the I-69/I-465 corridors for the safety of crews during the final cleanup/closeout stages of the project.
I thought that the speed limit was supposed to be 70 mph on the southern sections and 65 mph closer to I-465? Is it now permanently 55 mph? I can't imagine that will have virtually any compliance.

The speed limit through Bloomington was kept at 55 mph but was recently raised to 65 mph. The speed limit through Martinsville is 65 mph I believe.

Watch INDOT do a speed limit study on that section of I-69 and raises the speed limit to 65 or 70 mph...

They likely will, but it's just surprising they aren't doing from the jump. Surely the project is designed for a 70 mph design speed. When I-69 was complete between Bloomington and Martinsville, the rural portion outside of Bloomington was raised to 70 mph immediately. Prior to construction, it was only 60 mph due to not being a freeway and Indiana state law.

silverback1065

465 is posted at 55 and no-one goes it. the real speed is closer to 70  :-D

cjw2001

Keep in mind that the speed limit announcement is for the I69 finish line project area and not the previously completed parts or the Clear Path project areas.  I don't think it implies any long term policy for the southern parts.

I-55

I've seen signs covered near Southport for either 60 or 65 mph, so I doubt the 55 zone extends south of there at all

I-465 should be posted at 65 mph throughout, and I-69 should be posted at 70 mph immediately south of I-465.

silverback1065

it doesn't matter what speed they post, people will go 70+ regardless if they post police  :-D

INDOT has let a contract to asphalt resurface a section of I-69 in Gibson County. The project will run from .6 miles north of SR 168 to 2.12 miles south of SR 57. E & B Paving, with a bid of $15.6 million, was awarded the contract.
