Quote from: Scott5114 on February 12, 2025, 06:52:06 PMOff topic, but...

The big mountain near me was called Nuvagantu by the Southern Paiute, which means "where the snow sits". And indeed it's about the only place in Southern Nevada you can find snow if you want it. The first white guy to climb it was from Charleston, South Carolina, so he called it Mount Charleston.

I think it makes a lot more sense to name it something that has to do with the mountain itself than some city a few thousand miles away which, other than this one guy, doesn't have much cultural overlap with the area.

But if I were to start calling it Nuvagantu (which is a much cooler sounding name) nobody would know what I was talking about. (And if I started calling NV 159 Nuvagantu Boulevard even fewer people would know what I'm on about.)

We could translate it roughly to Spanish. How does Mount Nevada sound?

Clues in the name there. It's not a US entity and will follow British naming. They probably would have something in the article on the Gulf of Mexico that Trump changed its official name within the USA.

One thing about names.. They seem to be better when they are disconnected from the present day, preferably came from some obscure - or better extinct - language. Of course they need to be adapted to the melody of modern language, so they don't stick as a source thumb. So Denali is perfectly fine, Bde Maka Ska probably would be harder to stick.
For personal names in geography, they better be from a far away and preferably out of fashion. Did anyone hear about a living person named Amerigo? And Lake George is still an awkward one for me.

Not according to the executive order.

Quote from: Executive Order — Restoring Names that Honor American GreatnessSec. 3 — Renaming of Mount McKinley

(b) Within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, reinstate the name "Mount McKinley."  The Secretary shall subsequently update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to reflect the renaming and reinstatement of Mount McKinley.  The national park area surrounding Mount McKinley shall retain the name Denali National Park and Preserve.

Quote from: kkt on February 12, 2025, 09:20:53 PMIt's not within the president's power to rename geographical features that are not entirely within the United States.

That's why the executive order only applies to the waters already claimed by the USA.

(b) As such, within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, take all appropriate actions to rename as the "Gulf of America" the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico.  The Secretary shall subsequently update the GNIS to reflect the renaming of the Gulf and remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico from the GNIS, consistent with applicable law.  The Board shall provide guidance to ensure all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming.

For me, the only time I can remember using it was in geography quizzes, and then both "Denali" and "Mount McKinley" were acceptable answers referring to the mountain. I suppose I got used to calling it Denali because that is the preferred name among Discovery Channel shows set in Alaska which I would frequently watch.

I was a geography nerd, and it's the highest mountain in our continent.  There was also a brief period growing up when I had a fascination with Alaska and the territories of Canada.  So I'm sure I used the name Mount McKinley more than you were imagining.  And, back when I was participating in things like academic bowl (which I did all through high school), the federal name change from Mount McKinley to Denali was still more than a decade and a half in the future—which is to say, I'm not even sure Denali would have been an acceptable answer, because I'm not sure anyone participating or judging would have even heard of that name before.

Quote from: WillWeaverRVA on February 12, 2025, 03:46:03 PMThe wild thing is that the [...] executive order itself only assigns that stupid name to the continental shelf waters off the U.S. Gulf Coast and continues to recognize the remainder of the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico. Google and now Apple are actually in the wrong by applying the stupid name to the whole thing.

I wonder if Google and Apple even have the gulf partitioned to be able to call them different things.

For what it's worth, when I open Google Maps, the only label I can see is the one smack-dab in the middle of the gulf.  When I zoom in anywhere else, whether in open water or near the coast, I can't find any label at all.

I checked yesterday, and the NWS forecasts were still being issued for the Gulf of Mexico.  Today, that's changed, even for regions outside the territorial waters.  As of right now, the satellite imagery site still has a section for the Gulf of Mexico.

I hadn't read the executive order.  It made me wonder whether the process was complete and change official.  Something tells me that this change wouldn't go through the process listed in Title 43, which, like anything governmental, presumably takes months at a minimum.  According to the National Map, to which the GNIS referred me, secretarial order 3423 makes the change official.  The map still shows the Gulf of Mexico, but the changes are ongoing.

This doesn't really belong here, but it's interesting to note that the Texas legislature has bills introduced to change not only statutory references to the Gulf, but also proposing a constitutional amendment.  To be clear, this isn't changing the name, but just changing references to a part of the state the name of which is controlled by someone else.

Oh, cool, I did academic bowl too.

In Oklahoma, in a situation like this, the judges' book would usually include a few alternate answers that would be judged right. A coach could also lodge a protest if they had proof that an answer judged right was ruled wrong or vice versa.

That being said, who knows what was in the judges' book, or whether your coach would have been carrying around a book that included the name Denali. But if it's true that Alaska locals had been calling it Denali at that time, I can't imagine it wouldn't have been included as an alternate answer.

Encyclopaedia Britannica has been American-owned since 1901 and headquartered in Chicago since 1932.  But the President doesn't get to tell publishers what to call geographical features.
